My Theory After Midnight Screening

I fully expected to walk out of the movie with at least SOME idea of what is happening. After walking out knowing exactly what I knew walking in(about the Makers), I was a bit disappointing. Yes, there is nothing wrong with leaving some room for imagination, but there are tasteful ways of doing it(Inception) and then there are ways which answer nothing at all. Prometheus was in between. Anyways, so like many, I took to the internet to find possible answers. And after reading quite a lot, I have a vague idea of how I think this is going to shape out. In the temple, we see an image of an "alien" like life form, in many ways it seems like an image depicting admiration. You couple that with the Alien's life cycle and you have... The movie centered around life and the creation of life. The power it takes to create a life, even a synthetic life, brings about many moral questions. At what point do we decide that this is a sentient being and not just artificial? At one point do our creations decide for themselves? In the movie, David routinely seems to hold a grudge against humans. Still with a programmed devotion to Waylan but more keen on life. There was quite a deal of time spent watching David go about his days, soaking up information and learning about culture, history and forming his own ideas and thoughts. I think he has come to the conclusion that creations will ultimately destroy their creators. In order to give life, it must first be destroyed. This concept was constant throughout the film: the relationship between Wayland and his daughter, the pregnancy of the woman after her boyfriend is given the black goo(names escape me), the beginning scenes in which an Engineer "sparks" life... So my theory: The Engineers were vessels of reproduction for the Alien beings. The worshiped them as God's and sacrificed their own bodies in order to allow the alien breed to continue. The black goo seems to spark genetic changes to even the smallest organic life(like the worm that turned into cobra vagina). Let's call this black goo "fire" so we can relate it to the myth of Prometheus. So, this Engineer race lived it's life that way. Constantly having to sacrifice themselves in order to create their creators. This would explain the fact that all Engineers seem to look the same and that there are no female's(at least that I know off) among their species. They were solely a vessel for the alien species to use. However, like all good movies about synthetic life, the created life eventually figures out it is getting the wrong end of the stick. So what do they do? They create OTHER "synthetic" life in their image(remember we feel more "comfortable" if the synthetics "look" like us -- per David) Just like David, their sole purpose was to rid themselves of the burden of being the Alien's hosts. However, a sect went rogue. The sect believed in THEIR OWN rights to exists and therefore committed the ultimate sin/sacrifice: created humans in an attempt to create a "free" species of themselves. The ability to give birth to others like us. They visited us, warning us about the storage facilities for the black goo, expecting us to be weary of this location. HOWEVER, the other Engineers find out. In an attempt to make humans another subservient species, they send out a representative, a sort of "son of God" type of person. I think y'all know who I'm talking about. The difference between the previous times they visited and Jesus' visit? Social development of human kind. Advancement both physically and mentally. Before we were just cave creatures, completely dependent on these life forms that visited us...we were just animals. Now? Full fledged vengeful humans. So, this Jesus they sent tries to woo us into believing he is salvation and he is the son of God. Why? I think that sacrificing their own body to give birth to the Aliens WAS the way to reach God. Maybe they convinced themselves that in order to reach "heaven" they must sacrifice themselves for the aliens. A sort of "rebirth" for them after their first life. Of course, we humans were like "nah, I don't think so" and killed their peace maker. Hence, they prepare a full on attack on earth. We had become too advanced for their liking and had to wipe us out quickly. However, one of the rogue sect's members gets a whiff of this and unleashes the genetic black goo upon the storage facilities(which due to the number of them seen in the movie, seems to be more like a warehouse. Once a planet is populated, they send out a ship to either harvest or give birth to the Aliens on that planet) This last part I'm not too confident on. Well, less confident I should say. Another idea that came up as I type this...what if there is ONLY one alien queen(one God) So when she got a whiff of what the Engineers were doing(not sacrificing themselves, instead creating humans) She feared the humans ability to mate and recreate themselves, so she unleashed an attack on the bases before they could send out the goo to give the humans the key to LIFE. Or maybe, it was the Engineers goal to create more queens in order to overthrow their Alien creator. Hence the females in our race. Or...maybe Jesus was a test. Maybe they were WAITING to see how we reacted to another being claiming omnipotence over us, to see if we would be just another subservient species just like they were...once they realized that we WEREN'T about all that, they decided to trust us with the key to life...but not before an opposing sect or an Alien plan to stop them went underway. Yes, I ran out of energy as I typed this. But I just needed to share with people that care. B/c obviously my gf fell asleep during the movie. Women.

You're right, and the ending of Inception was PERFECT ... the will-it won't-it topple. Classic... this, however, and I might be wrong, but is LOST-written salvagable?
2013 sci-fi horror novels 'Custodian' and 'Tandem' available from Amazon, B&N, iTunes etc...

hey man enjoyed reading your post...youve got some really good ideas there...unfortunately the film left itself open to this kind of speculation....i appreciate a good deal of what you say but don't see any merit in other points at least no merit in the sense of the movie that was presented to us, as the film didn't address topics like jesus....i'm not one for picking holes in peoples thoughts i'm here to enjoy why you and other people think....but i got to say the whole thing about the engineer not liking that SHAW was hit because she was a woman and the key to life actually doesn't really stand up....because the engineer murdered FORD the female Scottish actress who was part of the company walking with weyland to the engineer. he smashed her to bits down the stairs where she landed.....i don't think the story (or lack there of) despite your good ideas is that intricate....i'd recommend a second viewing... to make a few distinctions....enjoyed your post though

Just seen the movie and I think there are too many people crying this and that. I think it was a great movie and opens lots of discussion. However I do think you are over reaching in your concepts. Perhaps the planet is a genetic warehouse of bad mixtures. These engineers are not engineers at all but, of all things, they are truckers like the humans in ALIEN. Just moving dangerous cargo from one safe place to another. I love that they give us the freedom to explore the Universe and although they answered many questions for me. Like Starwars this opens a whole new Universe to explore. I think with writing partner JJ Abram that they are leading you down one path to pull the rug out on you. Just like in Lost you dont even know you are building wrong ideas till they show you jumped the shark too soon. I cant wait to read more ideas from this great movie.

Crap, I didn't even remember him destroying the other woman. Well, that puts a hole in that thought. Which I wasn't too comfortable with anyway. I think that he was in shock at the sight of them, saw the old man and his pet robot and flipped out. Why? I remember seeing an earlier introduction to the movie where an old man was handing an Engineer the black liquid stuff he drank. Why did they cut that out? I don't know, but I think that is the direction they were going with this particular scene. Something about an old human man standing next to his "son" which happens to be a created life form...something triggered that anger and I think this will be significant. However, I think it's significant that the time of attack(based on the dead Engineer they find decapitated by the door) was about 2000 years before. Heck, I remember reading somewhere that this was significant for the film. Which is why I'm kind of sticking with the Ancient Aliens theme going on here where Jesus(what we know as Jesus, many religions have their "own" version of Jesus and God's and Saints) The shadiest part about this entire thing is why the ancient aliens that visited us made us notice that particular star system. I just see way too many similarities with the ancient astronauts believers. Yes, maybe I've watched too many episodes of Ancient Aliens, but the similarities between the theory and what happens in the movie I think seals it for me. Maybe Ridley Scott has picked up a sudden interest in the topic. Finally, I agree some of the ideas are far fetched. But I think it is unfair to at least not give us something to munch on while we wait for the sequels. I think that is just milking it, too much mystery if you ask me. Then again, I saw that some day in October holds some significance... I'll amend the original post to reflect my changes as I think about this some more and read up replies.

@Sirmyztiq.... hahhah good man...i absolutely appreciate where your coming from and am even happier to find another Ancient Alien tv series fan.... it was clear to me that the premise of prometheus was based in the AA theory...i say based because given the scope for artistic license...its veeerryyy LOOSELY based on the AA theory.....keep in mind the great concept of the cave paintings star systems and all the significant signs so strongly argued in the tv series....in this film are fictitious ones..its not like they said "hey...lets all go to orions belt cause the pyramids and cave paintings all point to there".....it was embellished and changed for the purposes of the story we watched....and so was the presentation that these engineers created life....the AA theory depicts that ancient Astronauts genetically modified life/humanoids/apes that already existed...giving way to generations of rebirth evolving into todays humans that they chose to intervene upon at different stages of history...and the explanation of jesus is also given along these lines in certain episodes..so it is very loosely based on it....though i appreciate and understand where your coming from and i'm not saying i disagree....just that the film didn't give me personally enough to start thinking down the jesus route....:)

This is from Zarathustra, the book that ties to the date and appears on the whatis101112 website. The symbol of the Übermensch also alludes to Nietzsche's notions of "self-mastery", "self-cultivation", "self-direction", and "self-overcoming". Expounding these concepts, Zarathustra declares: "I teach you the overman. Man is something that shall be overcome. What have you done to overcome him? "All beings so far have created something beyond themselves; and do you want to be the ebb of this great flood and even go back to the beasts rather than overcome man? What is the ape to man? A laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. And man shall be just that for the overman: a laughingstock or a painful embarrassment. You have made your way from worm to man, and much in you is still worm. Once you were apes, and even now, too, man is more ape than any ape. "Whoever is the wisest among you is also a mere conflict and cross between plant and ghost. But do I bid you become ghosts or plants? "Behold, I teach you the overman! The overman is the meaning of the earth. Let your will say: the overman shall be the meaning of the earth! I beseech you, my brothers, remain faithful to the earth, and do not believe those who speak to you of otherworldly hopes! Poison-mixers are they, whether they know it or not. Despisers of life are they, decaying and poisoned themselves, of whom the earth is weary: so let them go!" — Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Prologue, §3, trans. Walter Kaufmann

Here is a detailed explanation of the previous passage I posted Nietzsche injects myriad ideas into the book, but there are a few recurring themes. The overman (Übermensch), a self-mastered individual who has achieved his full power, is an almost omnipresent idea in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Man as a race is merely a bridge between animals and the overman. Nietzsche also makes a point that the overman is not an end result for a person, but more the journey toward self-mastery. The eternal recurrence, found elsewhere in Nietzsche's writing, is also mentioned. The eternal recurrence is the idea that all events that have happened will happen again, infinitely many times. Such a reality can serve as the litmus test for an overman. Faced with the knowledge that he would repeat every action that he has taken, an overman would be elated as he has no regrets and loves life. The will to power is the fundamental component of human nature. Everything we do is an expression of the will to power. The will to power is a psychological analysis of all human action and is accentuated by self-overcoming and self-enhancement. Contrasted with living for procreation, pleasure, or happiness, the will to power is the summary of all man's struggle against his surrounding environment as well as his reason for living in it. The book in several passages expresses loathing for sentiments of human pity, compassion, indulgence and mercy towards a victim, which are regarded as the greatest sin and most insidious danger.[6][7] Part of Nietzsche's reactionary thought is also that the creature he most sincerely loathes is the spirit of revolution, and its hatred for the anarchist and rebel.[8] Many criticisms of Christianity can be found in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in particular Christian values of good and evil and its belief in an afterlife. Nietzsche sees the complacency of Christian values as fetters to the achievement of overman as well as on the human spirit.

You know, Scott has said there may be sequels. Did we not leave the star wars movies wondering what would happen? Just saying, don't get all up in arms just because some questions weren't answered. This isn't transformers. This is a far more sophisticated film and series. Don't expect to be spoon fed.

@promoknight....whose asking to be spoon fed?...are you even on the right thread?...this films not that sophisticated....its quite blatant actually and just full of bad narrative and plot holes....giving rise to all these theories and speculations.
