I am actually unaware of what Ridley’s take is on any of this stuff if he’s spoken about it already but anyway this is what I came up with… The black oil is something that mutates specific DNA types in a host carrier relationship. Its not something that creates all life. Its got to be something that creates life on certain terms. I think it has a method but I think it is incompatible where the oil is mixed directly with Human DNA. Perhaps the real purpose of the engineer was to come back to earth and run experiments to create new species that could be used elsewhere? A new slave race for instance? Its no different than Weyland having David created. After thinking about this, I believe the first engineer could have been on LV-223. The engineer decides that he can not go along with his race’s plans just as I’m sure there would be some human opposed to the creation of David the android. In fact you can see the attitude by many of the crew towards David. I think David resented them…. So anyway, we see 1st engineer in a robe near a waterfall that goes into a river. The amount of oil he ingests destroys him and we are shown on a molecular level how it destroys his DNA and it continues to destroy. Would it stop destroying if it came into contact with other organisms in the water? What would it do to the water? What would that oil do to plant life or trees? Were the earthworms natural to that planet or were they only on the engineers ship because they had a specific plan or experiment? And could the destructiveness of the oil affect the atmosphere? Remember when our crew arrived there was very little oxygen and primarily carbon. Remember the decapitated space jokey? They carbon dated his body at what was it? 2000 years? Is it possible that what the 1st engineer set in motion could have taken 2000 years for LV-223 to have the atmosphere that it does when our crew arrives? 2000 years since the engineers were supposed to come to earth!! 2000 years for humans to evolve. Can you imagine seeing the moral issues in their society play out like issues in our own society and they completely forgot about us?? But back on track, these Engineers have the same DNA as us its not a far stretch to assume that they need oxygen to breath. Notice when they entered the engineers space ship, there was oxygen. That was a stupid thing to do to remove their helmets but I think it was more Ridley stressing the oxgen angle. Apparently the engineers need oxygen. If not, why generate oxygen for thousands of years? My only thing, is that if they need Oxygen then at the end when the Engineer goes after shaw, we see him without his elephant mask. Do you think he used it on the way to the pod and took it off in the other room? If so, he’s a dummy he could have used that against squid baby. Also he must share the same DNA as this crew because he was so arrogant to not bring a weapon. He didn’t even bring a blade. Now I was disappointed to see him go out like that….He went out like a punk…He could have sliced that squid and grilled his ass for lunch…jeez And then the result of the squid having come from host Shaw who was impregnated by Holloway who I think is unable to be used directly by the oil as a “host” but can be used as a carrier, remember the piles of spacejokeys on the alien ship? Remember how Mohawk dude mutated and freaked out? I think he would have blown up like the decap head if left alone and would have been like the pile of space jockeys. Anyway Squid kid and dumb rage engineer now equals Giger’s elongated alien head standing upright….For me, I laughed in the theater cuzz that was like Ridley throwing up a middle finger!

Good questions that I too have. Some of my questions: When the Dr. takes off, I wonder how she survived? How did she eat? How does she survive the spacecraft environment while in travel, since she's not as muscular as the perfect humans? Why would they create this kind of Alien creature and not another? How can they be killed? It's always about what we can't do. I'm tired of what we can't do, how about what we CAN DO? The opening scene to me left more questions instead of giving answers. By the way- Oil and Water do not mix, yet we saw the oil travel through and contaminate the water source. My take on that scene was that maybe he had to sacrifice himself by way of ingesting and allowing the oil to tear away his DNA to recreate it in. What I don't get is, if this was the perfect human, why recreate us? Why go backwards? That guy was about as perfect as they come. I also wonder why if they were (perfect) humans, why there wasn't women? One real lingering question is how we got a huge oblong shaped head from a starfish alien that mutated with a perfect human and it was a man that birthed him, instead of a woman. I need to watch this flick again. The scene where they spot the runways looked like it had 5 runways to 5 circles/planets. I think that there was a similar look in John Carter. Anyway, I have a thousand questions now, when I only had a few before I saw it. I hope we get a part two. He really needed another 60 minutes to fill in a lot of voids.

I'm thinking the black goo is a substance that genetically alter the DNA that may have various side effect, i.e. if you're weak, it makes you strong, if you're strong it makes you weak. Which explain the strength of the snake like creature in the puddle that was able to break a man's arm. And how the mohawk guy was able to fold like a piece of paper into an overpower hulk type humanoid. Also the one doctor that got sick when he was obviously healthy. Finally how the main character was unable to have kids but was able to get pregnant after intercourse with the Doctor after he was infected by the android. My interpretation of the beginning is the engineer sacrificing himself to seed a planet, Earth perhaps it couldn't had been that planet because there's not Oxygen and the engineer was practically naked. Notice how the black goo destroys his being and his DNA and when his body hit the water the DNA and "living essence" scatter and the engineer DNA reassemble itself again. I made a post about the time schedule of the engineer intention to destroy earth, as the carbon dating was done on the head, it was about 2,000 years old, Christ walk the earth 2,000 ago give or take a few hundred years from the movie's timeline which I think was about 2090 something. Perhaps they were intent on destroy man kind because maybe we believe in another god?
