It's actually a great point. The only issue I see with this is that the continents would have been closer together (not sure if they would have been still joined) because of plate movement.

200,000 yrs ago, we'd still be in the Pleistocene - the continents would basically be in the same position as you see in the movie's Earth model.
but it's a great point about showing Africa, our "birth place". didn't occur to me

Well, for once it's not centred on the US, which it seems to be a lot, just because film makers assume that the audience can only recognise one country.
I don't think it's meant to display Earth from 200,000 years ago, I think FreePlanet is just making the point that Africa is where we are believed to have taken our first steps as humans. But the image might be from their most recent trips, (assuming they have auto-update on their sat nav)
200,000 years back is not that much in plate tectonic terms, they didn't look much different at the end of the miocene period, which was much further back.

thanks guys,
this is yet-another-interesting (and enigmatic) pre-reveal slipped surreptitiously into the first of three Prometheus films.

Oh, I can use this double'd post slot anyway,
"I take it no one here's a fan of Neal Adams' GROWING EARTH (ahem) concept?"

actually, I suspect the 'birth place' idea isn't as selective as we might hope/believe
in the sense that 'it wasn't where we were born' but it's where a FEW OF US SURVIVED.
there's all sorts of stuff surrounding the date 12,000 years ago where some sort of asteroid-shower or "DELUGE" happened and most of what we see today in the realm of SPECIES is all that survived that 'drowning with debris' from some space attack.
Noah was a star-gazer? Potentially.

Hmm, I'm surprised there's not MORE DISCUSSION on this topic.
Do you not SEE how (potentially) stuff like REAL INTERVENTION gets written into Biblical stories like THE GREAT FLOOD?
Same with the whole Prometheus schtick! that A L I E N S monkeyed about (no pun intended) with the Human Genome and produced something like the Starchild Skull.

I noticed that but in a different way. I have never seen a documentary on T.V or anywhere else that didn't focus on Africa when they show images of Earth.
