What will the next Alien movie be about?
The Alien: Romulus sequel will take the franchise into new, uncharted territory, according to director Fede Alvarez. Speaking to Collider back in February of 2025, Alvarez shared the following:
For a sequel now, I think there’s a vast horizon in front of us for where we can go because Alien is so many things. Alien is Alien, it’s Prometheus, and everything in between. It’s such a big universe. I think now I would love to go, and the plan is to go into truly uncharted waters for the franchise.
Initially, the next Alien film was assumed to pick up where Alien: Romulus left off, following Rain and her Android brother Andy. Both Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson were expected to reprise their respective roles as Rain and Andy as well.
However, since that news broke, Alien: Romulus producer Michael Pruss had mentioned to Screenrant that same month that the sequel may not actually be a direct follow-up to Romulus. Nothing since has confirmed or denied where abouts the next film will take place within the Alien timeline.
What is the official title for the Alien: Romulus sequel?
Currently no title has been revealed for the next Alien sequel, however we suspect the format will continue the tradition of the Alien moniker followed by a space station or ship's name subheading. Once a title is officially announced this portion of the article will be updated.
When does the new Alien film release?
Filming on the Alien: Romulus sequel begins October, 2025. It took Alien: Romulus 17 months (4 of which were filming) from the time cameras initially rolled to theatrical release. If the sequel is on a similar schedule, it's very possible the next Alien movie could be eyeing a release date window around March, 2027, unless the studio options for a summer blockbuster release again.
An official release date has yet to be announced.
Will the next Alien film release in theaters or be a streaming exclusive?
Given Alien: Romulus' financial success at the global box office, it's safe to assume the sequel will also release in cinemas rather than a streaming exclusive, however 20th Century Studios have not yet stated so.
