Can we only theorize what happened or is there a definite answer?

I am sure this has been posted somewhere else but I am new to this so heres my thought. First I would like to add that I am not a religious person by any means. I actually consider myself an athiest, so being offended never occur's on a spiritural level. The (good) engineer in beginning created man in their image. There is a chance of the engineers maker being allmighty. Some engineers became jealous of humans, kinda like a fallen angel, and well want to destroy mankind. If an "fallen" enginner had drunk the goo i wonder what would have happened?

For a sequence with no dialogue, I thought the ideas were brilliantly conveyed and later in the film were proved to be conclusive : humans are a species designed by a non terrestrial intelligence. I took a great deal away from the opening, from what I believe are tributes to "2001", from the landscapes the audience sees from overhead, to the round object seen in the sky near the waterfall, another nod to Kubrick...Ridley Scotts' idea of the Monolith.

No there is nothing definite in the entire film. Things are deliberately left ambiguous to teach us something. Like Forever War's post. I hold the EXACT opposite view and I see elements of hidden comedy in the implied ending of the film. HIs second paragraph I agree with completely, but I think he misses the double meaning if the monolith reference. (it's LITERALLY a monolith i.e. a single standing stone... and it's a referene to Kubricks Monolith, which a) shows humans evolving on their own, and b) is used in Kubricks film to suggest changes to our perception - in fact he uses a monolith reference in Full Metal Jacket to do this. The people who see religious overtones are picking up on deliberate alternative explanations. But if they don't spot the others they will miss the point of the film. It does not lead conclusively to a supernatural explanation. Even the implied ending contradicts how it appears from the characters point of view.
