MemberOvomorphJun-15-2012 12:24 AMTried to link aspects of the film based on my limited knowledge of Greek Mythology...might be looking too far into everything. I don't know. I had to map it out in writing, may as well post it here. Have at it!
Through out the movie several lines stand out to be very important to the basis of the story. First we have David saying "hope we're not getting too close" or whatever in regards to becoming so life-like and human. We also have the more obvious Vicker's saying "every king has his reign, then he dies. it's inevitable." Later in the movie David also mentions something along the lines of "isn't that what everyone wants, their parents dead?"
A common theme in Greek mythology is the "killing" of ones father in order to take over reign as king.
So if the Space Jockey we see in the beginning of the movie is suppose to be Prometheus, the God who created life and gave man fire. That means the Space Jockey race belongs to the race of Titans in Greek Mythology. The generalization here would be Cronus who is usually depicted with a sickle or scythe (he can be the bringer of life or death).
Mankind would then be the Olympians, The children of Titans and a new race of Gods that eventually overthrow the Titans while lead by Zeus (the generalization for mankind). Humans are Gods now after being able to create their own life in David. Which if you saw the "Ted Talk" of Peter Weyland you knew before the movie came out.
Zeus overthrows his father Cronus who is then imprisoned in Tartarus ("It is a deep, gloomy place, a pit, or an abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering that resides beneath the underworld.").
Somepoint in human history mankind cast the Space Jockeys away, believing we're a superior being sufficent to exist on our own. The Jockeys then left to a facility on Lv223 (Tartarus), where they sought revenge until something happend. Leaving their mission incomplete.
The hive facility you see is Tartarus, and the "bugs" that eventually mix with the ooze are the Cerberus. The Cerberus is the multi-headed dog who guards the gates of the underworld. When they first discover the serpents there's one head, then another pops up and there is two. Only the one attacks, the other is never seen for the rest of the film. Besides possibly being the thing on the radar that keeps popping up by the ships doors. Which is refereed to as a "glitch." The entire purpose of showing two serpents in that scene is to show that the creature looks to be multi-headed.
The Black Ooze is most likely suppose to be a primordial soup, which could then be a generalization for the Primordial Deities. To get more specific about it the Deity Chaos. "The ship is carrying death." Chaos breaks down into two sub categories, Darkness and Light. Remember how the air affected the ooze in the beginning of the movie, and how it affected the throne room and canisters eventually mixing with the ooze?
Chaos (Void, Air, arche) - genderless (sometimes poetically female)
-Erebus (Darkness) – male and Nyx (Night) – female
-Aether (Light) – male and Hemera (Day) – female
Which could mean depending on the host there's two separate ways this black ooze can affect it's users. Light being its use in the creation of life, and Darkness being the creation of evil (the xenomorph race).
The Chaos diety is often dipected in the shape of a serpent or dragon. Which the bugs turn into after they enter the ooze.
David is the creation of man (Zeus, The Olympians). If Weyland could be viewed as the Zeus like figure here that means he has two sub categories of children. Zeus had divine offSpring, and he also had Semi-divine/mortal offspring. Which would be Vickers- the human daughter he doesn't want, and David the life he created and views as "the closets thing I have to a son, but alas he is not human."
The common switch of power in Greek Mythology, overthrowing ones father. David's evolution as an android has reached a point to where he is much more useful than the humans are themselves, who just use David as a tool. This is of course, besides Elizabeth Shaw who continues to treat and interact with David very human like. Infact see is the only character in the entire movie to interact with David as if he was human. Instead of humanity being given technology , technology is being given humanity. She is being an enabler in giving David life, or in other words she is now a Prometheus figure giving fire to "her" creation. She is eventually punished for this in having her Stomach cut open and her inner ripped out in the medical pod.
Prometheus is saved from his punishment by Hercules. If Peter Weyland is an Olympian (Zeus) that means what we view as life would be a divine offspring. This means that Vickers is infact the divine offspring. David, absent of the life his creators share would then be the semi-divine offspring. Earlier in the movie David is seen talking to someone in hyper-sleep, who was Peter Weyland. In this conversation Weyland tells David to infect Holloway which would inturn lead to Elizabeth's pregnancy. This can all be viewed as Zeus sentencing Prometheus to his eternal torment. David eventually helps Elizabeth, giving aid in leading to the answers that she began this whole nightmare in search of. Freeing Prometheus of his punishment. David does this because he respects Shaw and what she has done for him. This is first evident when Elizabeth is giving her mission briefing. While the crew questions her she states "it's what I choose to believe" which causes a tear to roll down David's cheek.
