My thoughts on Prometheus, an imperfect film.

I'd like to say first and foremost I did not want another Alien film. I must admit when I heard that the film was evolving from an origin story to an original story with strands of Alien DNA I was disappointed, but the more I thought about it, the more I started to fall in love with the idea of distancing itself from the Alien franchise while still having ties with it.
I've always considered Scott an incredible Director, in the same class as Scorsese or Spielberg. He has a flair for telling a story with fleshed out characters that you care for whether it is Crowe's Maximus in Gladiator or Cage's obsessive compulsive Roy Waller in Matchstick Men. I love how his films can build up tension and drama with just the right tone.
That being said Prometheus is not a perfect film.
I was anticipating a story of exploration that asks some questions and has shocking revelations revealed, instead I got some very interesting characters mixed with some VERY underdeveloped ones. A story that has potential, just doesn't deliver and worst of all feels like it could have been handled by any Director that has a firm grasp of making a film that has heavy effects.
You would think that I hated this film and you'd be wrong. I liked it, I just didn't love it. I will be getting the blu ray when it does come out.
Did anybody really care about Holloway when he died? I'm hoping when the blu ray comes out some time is spent on his character that doesn't make him quite the douchbag that he comes across on screen. I have the most problem with him. I just don't care about him at all.
And why show your hand so early by Shaw stating that we "humans" came from these aliens/engineer near the beginning? I know it's just her theory, but why not wait till the DNA test later in the film? I think it was a missed opportunity for a greater reveal.
It also feels like an unfinished film. Not that I'm against a steady pacing, but I think this film would benefit from some additional footage that might slow the pace down a bit, but would flesh out the characters and story a little bit more.
I think what bothers me most about the film is it doesn't feel like a "Scott" film to me.
I'd been waiting for this film since I first heard of its beginnings about 3 years ago and couldn't stop thinking about it.
I knew it couldn't live up to my expectations and I was OK with that, but being a hardcore film fanatic since the age of about 7 (I'm 43 now) I can't help but think of what could have been.
Is Scott losing his touch, was Lindelof a poor choice for writing the script, did too much get left on the editing floor? Those are questions I can't answer. I think more light will be shed when we get a blu ray with 20-30 minutes of added footage as promised. One can only hope.
