Alien: Earth and Alien: Romulus sequel news

My thoughts on Prometheus, an imperfect film.

I've seen the film twice and needed some time to pass to digest everything I've seen and put my thoughts in order. I'd like to say first and foremost I did not want another Alien film. I must admit when I heard that the film was evolving from an origin story to an original story with strands of Alien DNA I was disappointed, but the more I thought about it, the more I started to fall in love with the idea of distancing itself from the Alien franchise while still having ties with it. I've always considered Scott an incredible Director, in the same class as Scorsese or Spielberg. He has a flair for telling a story with fleshed out characters that you care for whether it is Crowe's Maximus in Gladiator or Cage's obsessive compulsive Roy Waller in Matchstick Men. I love how his films can build up tension and drama with just the right tone.     That being said Prometheus is not a perfect film.  I was anticipating a story of exploration that asks some questions and has shocking revelations revealed, instead I got some very interesting characters mixed with some VERY underdeveloped ones. A story that has potential, just doesn't deliver and worst of all feels like it could have been handled by any Director that has a firm grasp of making a film that has heavy effects.  You would think that I hated this film and you'd be wrong. I liked it, I just didn't love it. I will be getting the blu ray when it does come out. Did anybody really care about Holloway when he died? I'm hoping when the blu ray comes out some time is spent on his character that doesn't make him quite the douchbag that he comes across on screen. I have the most problem with him. I just don't care about him at all. And why show your hand so early by Shaw stating that we "humans" came from these aliens/engineer near the beginning?  I know it's just her theory, but why not wait till the DNA test later in the film? I think it was a missed opportunity for a greater reveal. It also feels like an unfinished film. Not that I'm against a steady pacing, but I think this film would benefit from some additional footage that might slow the pace down a bit, but would flesh out the characters and story a little bit more. I think what bothers me most about the film is it doesn't feel like a "Scott" film to me. I'd been waiting for this film since I first heard of its beginnings about 3 years ago and couldn't stop thinking about it. I knew it couldn't live up to my expectations and I was OK with that, but being a hardcore film fanatic since the age of about 7 (I'm 43 now) I can't help but think of what could have been. Is Scott losing his touch, was Lindelof a poor choice for writing the script, did too much get left on the editing floor? Those are questions I can't answer. I think more light will be shed when we get a blu ray with 20-30 minutes of added footage as promised. One can only hope.

Nice review. It felt pretty Scott to me. But the guy simply doesn't get that there will always be One 2001.

I understand your point here Cinefan. I'm pretty pumped for the bluray extended cut edition. I thought the whole elder engineer scene would of been fascinating. I think it would of added a whole new scope to the film. I'm glad Scott is giving us 20 to 30 minutes of footage. Directors nowadays are so stingy with their "directors" cut or "extended cut". They give us like oh 5 to 10 minutes of extra footage if that. But I really enjoyed Prometheus for what it is. In my honest opinion, I think it matches the quality of the other 4 Alien films. The visuals in the film were INCREDIBLE. I'm currently reading Prometheus The Art of The film. Arthur Max came up with INSANE stuff. Just looking at all the ideas they had for the film. The sketches, photos, paintings just look beautiful and completely breath taking. I was completely taken back. I also liked knowing that Scott pulled some of the original '79 sketches done by Ron Cobb and H.R. Giger into the mix of the film. Sticking with the tradition of the series.

I thought that Holloway was in every conceivable way an arse, and couldn't wait for him to fry. Fifield and Milburn were poorly developed and struggled with properly ropey dialogue. As for the more minor roles, I can't even remember most of them, that's a real disappointment. But what I could not get my head around is how Weyland managed to persuade a crack team of experts to board a spacecraft and travel to other side of the galaxy, leaving everything and everyone they know behind, without apparently telling them why........Prometheus lands, and they don't have a clue why they are there, or who they travelled with?!! We jumped from the cave to the spaceship with no bridging development of the story whatsoever, and I'm sorry, but to me it seemed jarred and incomplete.

^ I totally agree with you. When they jumped from the caves to the ship I was wondering if the theater I was in had cut out what happened in between lol. I think, maybe stretching it a little, that it can be a parallel to the dawn of man from 2001. As David1 said I think Ridley wanted Prometheus to be too much like 2001. Personally, i liked the film alot probably because I enjoyed 2001. After giving it some thought and reading many theories and debates I started liking it even more than when I first came out of the theater.

Good review. In a film I love and believe is every bit as good as Alien, characterization is a big problem. Then again, everyone thought the characters in Alien were a bit underdeveloped as well. Now they're everyone's favorite Space Truckers. That said, there are problems with all aspects of characterization in the film. Characters are "underdeveloped" as you said. Characters do things they maybe shouldn't or wouldn't do. Some of the silly things they do can be expliained or reasoned but I still feel there's too much of it. I think Holloway's death was didn't work because his character wasn't developed properly but I also think they did a poor job of editing that scene. I seem to remember Scott saying something about why the scene was shot/ edited and played out the way it did but can't remember what he said exactly. I do remember what he said made sense but it still didn't make the sequence work for me. Taking that into consideration I still love the film and believe it's pretty high on the list of best sci-fi films.

If you watch the movie a second or third time, you can easily see how it was filmed scene by scene. Each scene is a movie, but when linked with other scenes doesnt flow for meaning. Too many things are intorudced and not answwered and you keep looking for closure in the next scene. We have all commented on that. Bridging scenes cost time and money and is also an art form...In action films, you can get away with it. In films where there is a message or a drama, it remains a challenge. So, what is prometheous? Is it a sci-fi flick? Action, drama or ...? Perhaps it needs to pick an identity long before it is edited and presented...

@Richie...I've never commented on looking for closure after every scene. I didn't feel that way at all watching the film. I've seen it 4 times btw. I admit the film has flaws but I thought the film flowed just fine.

I'd say some quite fair observation. Very interesting - particularly your final, and presently unanswerable, questions. I am much afraid that, in due time and by varying degrees, the answers will turn out to be, "yes", to all three.
