This is part of the ambiguity of the images in the first place. It remains unknown if the cave paintings referenced an invitation, or warning, or myth or... fill in the __________.

We don't know it was really an "invitation". Humans interpreted it as such... But what if the original message was "Never go to this planet system"? Or perhaps the Engineers didn't intended it to be a message at all. Primitive humans who saw them took them for gods and drew crude representations of them and their holographic star maps.
