2ND TIME THROUGH...

OK, saw the film for the 2nd time today... A few things I missed the first time: * Initial Engineer's DNA breaks down -- then begins building/multiplying almost immedaitely in the waterfall/water, however, when black goo comes in contact with Pro' crew only "bad" things come of it. * The probe or "pup" seemingly stops at a door and Captain says it periodically picks up signs of a life form. However, he also tells the 2 guys stuck in cavern all night that the life form is not moving. If it's the "sleeping Engineer," then why does the pup sometimes indicate it's existence and sometimes not? * Opening the canister chamber sets the canisters "in motion," but opening the "cargo bay" filled with them does NOTHING to the canisters...??? * The awakened Engineer does not "bow" to the humans; he trips and is woozy from hyper-sleep. He also clearly doesn't get upset until David addresses him. * Weyland tells David "there's nothing," ostensibly meaning there's no afterlife. Curiously, David says "I know" yet wishes him well on his "journey." * David clearly wanted Shaw to bring the baby alien inside her back to Earth and most likely "revived" it after Shaw cut it out of her and left it for dead in the med lab. * Speaking of the med lab, it was only programmed for males -- obviously for Weyland. Meredith's living quarters was a self-contained living area for Weyland as well; in fact, it's that "chamber" where Shaw & Engineer do brief battle. In summary, this film was OBVIOUSLY filled with questions; the kind intended to... oh, I don't know... keep us coming back for more??? Well, consider my two ticket purchases "in the bank."

I don't think Weyland's comment is anything at all to do with an an afterlife - and certainly not to do with the apparent absence of an afterlife as, 1] he wasn't actually dead. It seems unlikely he would be in any position to know. 2] as you have pointed out, if that was his meaning, it would make David's immediate reply completely nonsensical. Personally, the more I hear of this idea of, "choosing to believe" - in the context of this film and particularly, [if I accept what seems to be a wide consensus], in terms of how that idea forms a basis for a number of the film's propositions - the more empty, simplistic and underdeveloped the approach is sounding.

Thanks for the report, curious about people willing to make a few trips to the theater before it leaves, I think it makes a world of difference in understanding many things..including accepting that some things were meant to be mysteries.

There can be NO QUESTION Ridley & Co. designed this to be a "who -- or what -- done it." Never seen Lost, but I understand the entire series was like this...

Well, I saw Lost, all of it....and it wasnt that the individual episodes were not written well because on the whole, they were...but what dragged it down was dragging it out like the producers did. And the ending of the series...the producers denied for years that the show would end as it did. I see less the hand of Lindelof here and more the hand of Ridley..clearly he was aware of LOST, maybe not a fan, but admired it's real ability to cast atmosphere very well. Youre seeing a great many more things in Prometheus because of it's compressed nature as opposed to waiting weeks or years for something in LOST...but you get the same sense of things that are there and you know they are connected and youre getting dazzled visually while youre trying to organize it all in real time sitting in the theater....its a rush, it really is...some people dont have the patience, nothing wrong with them at all, its just not for them

Gotta admit I got a kick out of scientist "Doctor" Shaw "choosing" to believe things of science -- like her father taught her to regarding things of faith... And add to the never-ending list of unexplained the pile of Engineers that appeared to be trying to get away or out of there; the "alien goo" that David plays with between his fingers, which ostensibly indicates that xenos were present; the obvious awareness he has for the "hieroglyphics" as he opens doors and plays back history at the first attempt; his seeming contempt (for a dispassionate robot, that is) for Shaw & Charlie... the list goes on and on...

Pretty clear to me that the message is that there is no afterlife. From "choosing" to believe whatever folks wish to, to hearing Weyland say there's nothing to David saying he knows [there's nothing]... Whole point was to live for today and not care about questions we will likely either never know -- or not WANT to know.

* David clearly wanted Shaw to bring the baby alien inside her back to Earth and most likely "revived" it after Shaw cut it out of her and left it for dead in the med lab. When did he had time to revive it? His attention was all on Weyland. It lived because it's a stubborn alien squid. And David had contempt for Charlie, not Shaw. He was fascinated with Shaw and her belief. It's why he watched her dreams(with a small smile when he syncs up), took her cross, and tested her faith. He makes it a point to save her in the storm and he's the only one who asks if she's okay while Charlie's ranting at her. After viewing the movie several times, I'm thinking Fassbender's remarks on David's Jealousy are all centered on Holloway. And what does Holloway have that David does not? Not intelligence. Not wit. It's Shaw. And maybe Mr Weyland saw nothing because he wasn't dead yet, and where he's going probably won't have a white light. Shaw still believed at the end of the movie. That's what counts. If the theme intended to convince of no afterlife, Shaw would have changed her mind about God in general. She would have taken off the cross. However, she made a point to retrieve it. And she makes a point to get answers.
