Art DirectorMemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 7:07 AMI was sat watching Prometheus last night. I sit and watch it most nights, always this confusion comes when the Trilobite scene with the Engineer plays out.
Why does the Trilobite have teeth? I understand that the teeth(which are large and sharp) maybe for eating and a creature that size would need fuel to(protein?) keep going and find a victim. Anything that is big enough to need to be taken apart would be big enough to impregnate. We know that huggers aren't picky.. Engineers,Humans,Dogs and Bovines and anything else of size (as shown by Jonesy not getting turned into a little furry orange egg).
That said I can't figure on why the teeth(they look very Hollywood, unneeded and almost like an afterthought). I know Mr.Scott would have a straight forward(and no BS) answer... have you? Why teeth?

and squids have a structure called radula, most of the mollusks have it, is a structure located in the mouth that has many teeth. (The radula is used to get food by scraping the substrate).

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 7:19 AMFor one, because I think Ridley Scott and producers wanted to 'play' with the idea of the all-consuming female genitalia mythos as many things of the womans anatomy, reproductive purposes/functions, their sexual atttudes towards men of this day and age, the so-called Power Woman or Business Woman Vickers? - Power Dressing) and what not are flirted with in this film, Shaw and Holloway, love making, cesarean section, abortion (all women related themes that at times they have to deal with it is just turned on its head here in this movie and given a macarbe twist on the notion, making women feel invaded now just as men did during their first watch of Alien) and the Alien-Squid is an about-face analogy to the so called 'Love-Child' or the 'Starchild for that matter. The other idea is that in the alien creatures back-up defense as it ensnares a potential new host those teeth as with the spider-hand/claws of the facehugger simply clamp firmly around or as close around as they can get to the Engineers head. Its also playing into an indirect nod to Parkers line in alien yet writ large and made ABSOLUTELY LITTERAL in this instance: 'I'd rather be eating something else but... right now I am thinking of food!' On the part of the Engineer though.
It's playing with the concept of alien pussy! Again, on the part of the Engineer, but in relatively speaking terms. I'm serious!! I'm really serious about this idea! Ithink the film makers are in a way having a dirty laugh at theimplication and the coonotation that the 'attack' upon the Engineer actually implies. It's Just the idea is subtle and hidden within pain sight. That's where I think they were going with that idea!

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 7:19 AMHuman DNA input? From the rear, that large creature can be seen to have a human back, two arms and two legs along with the other four limbs/tentacles.
The rearview would be the only one we'd want to see, wouldn't it?

Art DirectorMemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 7:24 AM@xenodochy... The back of the creature (when it goes limb and falls on the impregnated Egineer) always look like the back of a hugger(after the tail) , not a human to me.

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 10:53 AMAh teeth - a defense or offensive mechanism put in place by genetics, hereditary means. A way for the beast to protect itself or to latch on to the host and not allow a separation. Look at the Deacon, nice row of teeth inherited from its mother and the host. To me it is straight forward. Also though could be a bit of Hollywood dress up to make it appear scarier, mean and bad ass.
On the other hand HyperNova suggests some type of sexist or sexual overtones with the designs. To each their own but I really cannot believe that this movie or an Alien movie had to do with the “all-consuming female genitalia mythos as many things of the woman’s anatomy, reproductive purposes/functions, their sexual attitudes towards men of this day and age, the so-called Power Woman or Business Woman Vickers”.
Just saying!

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 11:21 AMSome of the things that taste better can only be tested with the teeth. For example, prawns, chicken, bacon and anything that requires you to chew. :P
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 11:32 AMI was infering that with Alien it was penetration overtones, penetration of the male, male rape suggestions of male oral penetration via the mouth by man-on-man sex and if that is not you preference then to the more macho, heterosexual creed of man it scares the hell out of them! Doesn't it because it is a threat to their masculinity. It was male rape, vie the face hugger, male incubation, birth via-the male! All such things considered taboo in myhtos to which Giger is most famous.
Apply that rudimentary thinking into the same pretext of another 'Themed' franchise and this time the honus is placed upon the femal genitalia, the snapping teeth, the suggestion is not litteral but in some ways there is a link being drawn to a phobia men have towards women and penetration and their genitalia all together for a fear of castration (see the film called: Teeth and read up on the syndrome that it is based on and thus someone made a horror film out of it and exaggerated it for gore content, the name of it escapes me now. Some women have phobias of the male genitalia as well and more over, in some ways it is like the alien thing is coming to castrate the Engineer in a symbloic gesture that is alluding to the whole greek mythology premise. You really have to be clued up more to read these hidden symbologies instead of just blindly skipping over the types of comments I make like it is sheer an utter nonsense as it seems what your really trying to do is just poo-poo it because you havent got the want or seire to go there and dig deeper into visual metaphors and Mis en Scene, film language and in particular, taking the greek parables and mixing them up into exotic, almost barely noticable suggestions on the first viewing except if you try and reconfigure your thinking to see many of the scenes you are being presented with in 'Terms'. Think in Terms and you'll see the hiiden easter eggs standing there before you within plain sight staring you right in the face.

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 6:46 PMI believe the question was about teeth and not about sexual overtones in the movie. To each his own. See what you will or you want. As far as I am concerned you got some serious hangups on visual metaphors and about sex or sex acts.

Interesting way of trashing someone but in a more intilectual manner.(or you think) Let me see how I can come back to that insult - Well arn't you just full of shit! What a pure asshole and dumbass to boot. Put aside all the bullshit and just say Fuck You if you do not like my comments. I just think you have serious issues with sexual metaphores and sexual overtones or maybe you just hate men or something. You need help - real bad.

MemberOvomorphJul-09-2012 4:59 PMJust another reason that I didnt like the Squid or the Deacon design. Should also have been a tubual for insemination. They went for shock rather than intrigue. We all still talk about how great the original designs in Alien were. I doubt we will be talking about the creature design in Prometheus much longer, other than how silly it looked.

Art DirectorMemberOvomorphJul-11-2012 9:39 AM@HyperNova, I would really like reply to your copmment (other than being so intellectual that you didn't even get the question)... My livng, career and all professional live I have been a fine-artist...one who which paints using sexual preconceptions as a piont which must be broken. That said to do this I must take in most things I sees and instantly arrive at the obvious metaphor and then look deeper so I can get to whats really behind it. I WOULLD NOT HAVE BEEN AS SUCCESFUL AS I AM IF I THOUGHT AND PAINTED LIKE A CHILD.
To boot I find phsicoligy very intersting and all this leads to the further questions... do you feel unappreciatted? Do you feel unheard? And do you need a cuddle?

MemberOvomorphJul-18-2012 9:57 AMDopleganger, I have no issues and you are completely missing what I am conveying with my previous answer, I have no hang-up's and you are simply trying to project onto me your own set of insicurities. I am not going to say f!@* you or anything like that because I do not have to.
Your just lashing out at my giving a response to the answer I was not in any mood to attack you directly but you can't deny that some people see things too simply and are not willing to be told anything. They just lash out and attack all the time to deflect attention away from the discussion and instead place it upon the one that merely attempts to give an answer and not one where the average person just skips over in a general fashion simply because they are unable or unwilling to dig a little deeper for the details and you would then question my integrity.
I have no issues just intellectual curiosity and it is clear that you are one that will fail to think in detailed manner as I want too. So thats fine for you I guess. Lets just not respond any more to each others comments after this and that would be better for the both of us. I'll converse with others and just not you. You do likewise.
