starring William Hurt and directed by Kurt Russell
It was based on a book by Chayefsky
and based on real research around isolation tanks
its from the 1980's...
I loved it
although it is quite dated now :)
the interesting concept from this movie that relates to Prometheus is about other states of consciousness-
and the possibility of ancient memories
I thought there could be ideas for when people go into the cyro-pods
and references to dreaming with David observing Shaw and apparantly communicating with Weyland

But hardly anything you can pinpoint has having to do with Prometheus. Even the Religious thing has diferent aproaches to it [Prometheus is about aliens, Altered States is about childhood frustration due to daddy not being religious and drugs]
Dated? more or less, still has great Fxs on it.

and yes the themes are different
I guess I was thinking about experimental flotation tanks
and that is about consciousness/dreaming
and ideas shared around here have referred to dreaming
and consciousness in humans/AI
