The war that is Prometheus.

This movie is really making us turn on each other. All I see is things getting worse. Theories are being ripped apart, and "bad screen writing" is emerging as the victor. I think all of us, the ones who loved, liked, or hated this move, we all wanted a little more. Now we are stuck creating, each of us, our own universe that is Prometheus. The ones who loved it, are filling in the blanks to cover up the nonsensical parts of the movie as a whole, that the ones who hated it clearly pointed out. We all understand what we saw, a film made in 2012, that had to maybe try something different and pressure itself to be "that one new idea that has never been done before, but tie itself in to a classic that birthed physical horror in space." And I'm starting to believe it ultimately failed. Everything brought up in this movie, has some connection to a book, a movie, an urban legend, a tv series, something that has ALREADY been done. I even went so far as to come up with a theory that I haven't posted. And that was "maybe this movie was meant to be heard, and not seen." As crazy as that sounds..........what if we all went to the theater that night, or day when we first went to experience Prometheus, and we all just shut our eyes for the 2 hours and 4 minutes, and let our imagination bring out the nightmares, ignoring the visual wonders, the texts as to coordinates, the cgi, and if we really just let our mind fill in the blanks. Why should we always base movies on what our eyes tell us? I like to read, and movies just can never ever pull that same creativity out of us, in movies we are left to establish a connection with the characters that is so much different then when we read a book, books give us the thoughts, the motives, the back-stories, the inner conflicts being conducted in the characters mind, and movies can never give that to us, and maybe the intent of the movie was to try and give us a book reading experience through an on screen performance. But instead we did the logical thing, and went to WATCH a movie, nitpickiing the errors at the very first chance, and in the end we all came to the forums like the blind leading the blind in a never ending circle or who what when where why and how? At this moment I'm not sure if I'll ever be sure if there where any real intentions of this movie, or maybe even a 130 million dollar product, could have just been let out there by the wrong hands or perhaps Ridley is telling us all that he's starting to suffer dementia, and gave us this movie so that we may know what it's like to physically suffer from it? I'm just gonna let the theories run wild in my head until I can either forget this flick, or the Blu-ray magically makes me and everyone else go "Oh, I get it now.", or I wind up in a padded room somewhere. It is just a movie though, and I personally wanted Ridley to make all the other movies in this universe "all better" and come up with an explanation for everything, to stick it to every previous plot hole, to neatly wrap and put a bow on AVP and Resurrection, but I'll just keep on dreaming until this whole franchise gets rebooted in another 30 years perhaps........... Overall, Prometheus is becoming an entity in itself, a 'conspiracy theory' if you will. Scott and Lindelof are in the Weyland Corp Illuminati? Or deftones1986 had too much coffee tonight?

@zzplural- PLease- no warfare intended here. Perhaps you can get your oddball friend to join in here. He may not find it as destructive... Expectations. -- I didn't see the tin either, but I did see the trailers and the original Alien. Perhaps like your oddball friend, I too counted the loftier ideas as poor construction of anything logical. Your oddball friend maybe does't like hints? And hints? And more hints?! Maybe he wanted to see a movie? I don't know what a British V sign means, or know about nautical Hands Off, and admit that I'm confused... But I don't feel like an idiot because of that. I don't consider Prometheus to be Bad Writing. I DO think it is confusing and requires (of me, at least) much more though than is entertaining to get it to make sense. I don't like the writing style because I didn't get what was supposed to be going on on LV-223. And now, I am even confused about what happened on LV-426. Before Prometheus, events shown to have happened on LV-426 were a curious mystery...

"...Now we are stuck creating, each of us, our own universe that is Prometheus..". @deftones1986 Thank you for the quality of your post, ..and thoughts you express.. I selected this part of your post becauase it sort describes what happens to each of us,,hurly daily..minute ..secend and to some extent,,second.. The mind.."ID' constantly trying to justify it's self..and get the attention of the real you. But if your mind is fresh .aware.. if your living..not judgemental..then the 'real you' experiences the event,,,in this case the movie.. AIf your mind is contantlky thinking,,comparing..looking for additiona details it is too busy to have the full experience..in this case a movie.story..ect. and sees the storyline as youi desribe in the few lines above...create ypur own universe' Dealing with the actual movie,,it diolog..scene presentation..facts as mentioned..and the less interperation of what we see.. I think there will be less 'turning on ourselves' which really has nothing to do with the actual movie.. I can't believe that I am actually trying to make sense of living./mind/reality on a post of Prometheus.. Perhaps it is time to leave the thinking aside and just enjoy the enjoy the movie experience.. Right know I thinkk (ha!) enjoy the experience of a nice cup of coffee!

@deftones: "bad screen writing" is emerging as the victor. If you want to use general opinion as a measure of your theory, more than 100,000 voters on IMDB give the film an average rating of 7.6, which suggests otherwise. I've talked in depth with 4 of my friends who saw the movie. Three were pleasantly surprised and absolutely loved it. One absolutely hated it. Over the weeks, I've had loads of fun destroying his objections one by one. A lot of his problems with the movie were about expectations. Hint: there was nothing on the tin for it to contain. More of his problems were down to an arrogant insistence that there were loads of illogical inconsistencies in the film. Thre aren't. There were plenty of things he hadn't thought of as possibilities and he certainly wasn't thinking about some of the loftier ideas that are hinted at in the film. If you don't know what a British V sign means, or know about nautical Hands Off, it's easy to get confused, it's all too easy to get on a high horse and moan about bad writing. It's a great story that's well written in my opinion.

@joeyjoe. Yes, the discussions here are fizzling down. However- the next installment will be one of two things. Either it will answer much of what Prometheus asked, or it will be another... Well, I don't know(?)... Fuel for more rants and other back and forth questions and speculation? Either way, the next film will create more pro or con talk and discussion. That's something I look forward to someday. Beating the next one into the ground! In some ways, Prometheus was a disappointment. But I cannot help but feel that it was so for me because I am such a fan of Alien. I therefore cannot hate it too much. And so, I anticipate the next film wondering if I'll like it or be disappointed again.

Ive been thinking along the same lines deftones.... I was thinking there are a lot of people here that are passionate about this movie for all sorts of different reasons I was a young scifi fangirl who snuck into the 1979 opening of Alien I loved it and couldnt stop thinking about it and all of the ideas and possibilities and watched all the other movies..... some not as satisfying as others the build up for this movie was huge but we are all here talking... debating...theorising what keeps us all hanging on..:)

Prometheus does indeed fall into that category of films that really got the audience thinking, debating and sometimes arguing. Twin Peaks was a mini-series, but this comes to mind for some reason. I know there are others. Being off from work tonight and not being able to articulate suggests that I should stay away from stuff like coffee too.

@aircraftfixer: I completely agree with the twin peaks parallel. As far as prometheus is concerned...Well, artistic creation (any form of creation for that matter) is often violent, chaotic, and messy. I truly believe prometheus to be a vital and compelling piece of filmmaking (just look at the banality that is modern mainstream cinema. prometheus = cinematic enema). The creators of the film took many risks in an effort to construct something that they felt driven to produce. Though the film is certainly NOT perfect, I feel it succeeds admirably. I cant remember the last time i was involved in this much discourse (personally and collectively) as a result of a summer blockbuster; probably never. The aforementioned is definitely something the filmmakers were after...and they got it; for better or worse. Im very happy that prometheus was made and that it is the beast that it is. I believe the film was intended to provoke a sense of questioning and longing and grappling etc. Art is highly subjective. No way no how could prometheus have ever pleased everyone. Frankly, im rather excited about the fact that the film was such a divisive hand grenade. Ultimately it may end up being just a lone soldier, but I really hope that Scott is able to make a sequel to prometheus. This fictional universe that we all know and cherish has been opened up and primed for future artistic exploration like never before. I view prometheus as the agonizing birth of something that is interesting, multifaceted, unpredictable (i dont know what i thought prometheus would be, but i didnt anticipate what it ultimately was), and absolutely necessary. Im a bit sad that the chatter appears to be dying down (i guess we've beaten it into the ground). Bring on 10.11.12 and P2! ???

I enjoyed Prometheus, but am NOW waiting for the Extended Version that might (or might not) be fairer with the viewer and conceal less from him. Twin Peaks - made by an artist David Lynch. Prometheus - made by an artist Ridley Scott. Good art, after all, should be able to spark debate, right?

I'm still waiting for a good new Alien movie. I did like this, but not nearly as much as I had hoped I would.
