Alternate Thoughts

It has occurred to me that Janek stumbled upon the key: LV223 is a base to create weapons in this case biological. He also knew that if you are going to be building weapons of mass destruction you dont do it where you live.
Lets look at that line of reasoning. It would seem that in the alien universe everyone that knows about the aliens wants to weaponize them, are the engineers any different? They clearly are a scientific race and they also seem to have the desire to create weapons.
We do know that LV223 and LV426 are neither the engineers home planet nor the aliens. Perhaps the aliens were not created by the engineers in the first place but actually have a homeworld where they may not even be the dominant species. Outside of their natural environment with no natural predators they are easily the dominant species and therefore the perfect weapon for planetary decimation. They are unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality (thank you Ash) and easily a weapon. Chaotic in nature and impossible to control.
I think that the engineers came across the natural habitat of the aliens and removed some samples for study. Storage of the biological specimens was on LV426 in order to keep liability to a minimum as they know about the chaotic nature of the xeno's. LV426 is a bank and specimens were removed for genetic deconstruction/manipulation on another planetoid (LV223).
The black goo could reasonably be a way of keeping genetic material that has already been weaponized ready for transport. LV223 is most likely a staging area for their experiments.
This would explain the differences in the alien life cycle as seen in Prometheus.
