MemberOvomorphAugust 01, 20122973 Views18 RepliesI brought the first 3 alien movies on dvd the other day. I watched the 3rd alien movie, but this time i watched the directors cut, and i must say it was alot better than the theatrical version. To my surprise the alien came from a cattle beast rather than a rottweiler (as was the way in the theatrical version).
worth a watch gang

Agreed. The "directors cut" is a much cooler version.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

I watched the Directors Cut not too long ago and was really surprised as to how much better it was from the original release.Where talking night & day differences.Completely different film.I promised myself not to give any spoilers but it has a homicidal maniac murder scene that would make Hannibal Lecter say "Holy cow, that guy is nuts!".

yessir... alien 3 is incredible. The extended/alternate cut of the film is actually not the director's cut, but the restored workprint cut (fincher wouldnt go back and do a director's cut if his life depended on. so much bad blood etc). It is a very different film. One of the things i like about the workprint cut is the fact that the viewer is able to meet and differentiate the prisoners a bit more. I dont know if your dvd copy has the reworked audio or not, but the alien anthology blu ray set has the alien 3 workprint cut with completely reworked audio (all new ADR/foley etc.) the results are amazing and really help to put a viable alternative to the theatrical release of the film on the table (workprint used to be unlistenable). ive always thought of alien 3 as a very underrated film. Pumped to see people giving it some live!

Alien 3 I have a special place in my heart for, regardless of what people say. Maybe because it was the first I saw on its 'cycle', when it came on video for home rental (the others I had seen on TV years after release) but I have always enjoyed it. And the director's cut merely extended my pleasure. That last bit sounded so much better in my head.

I have to the third movie is my favourite of the sequels because it keeps with the thriller feel and keeps a slower pace then Aliens (which I did still enjoy), the directors cut is definitely a much better film then the theatrical version. Just happy I bought the Quadrilogy set when I did, really makes the movies 10x better.

@pulserifle187 - took yer advice today, fired up the flick, and you are spot on. This holds up - better than I remember. Watching the documentary on making the flick, that David Giler fuck almost deprived us of Fincher, who did an amazing job on this.
Leave it to a "producer" with artistic inclinations that has none to railroad a flick into the ground.
...then again, watched the original teaser trailer of "On Earth, EVERYONE can hear you scream".

I picked up the Anthology a while back at the suggestion of another member specifically for this movie and finally got around to watching it a few weeks ago. I always liked the original version as it's the first in the series I had ever seen, however this version felt so much more complete with a little more depth to the characters (aha, so that's what those 3 prisoners were doing in the corridors with the candles). As for the Ox vs the Rot either one works fine for me (actually I could've sworn there was a scene where the alien was giving itself a bath like a dog in the original, bad memory I guess), but with the Ox we get a nice look at the Royal Facehugger which I would prefer to keep in the film.
@Late- I didn't watch that teaser trailer, but what are your thoughts on how that version would've been with aliens on Earth. I have to wonder even though it would be set in the future if it would've seemed out of place like the Aliens running around in Gunnison, CO. The xenos seem better suited for outer space and dark corridors, on film anyways.

Agreed the movie is different.
The good news is look at how much we see in the Art Book and then the props and stuff that never made it into the movie and Prometheus will surely get a extended and different cut that would be like seeing a different movie, some of the cuts could explain why Prometheus never flowed well in some scenes and also help fill some plot holes.
I expect a recut/extended Prometheus to explain more and also be more brutal as far as violence and gore. Prometheus appears to have 20 mins cut and also scenes that are not only cut but some alternative ones.
so yes as with the different Alien 3's i am sure everyone will have their own preferred version of Prometheus.

@ Big Dave- Have you seen Highlander 2 the Renegade Version? That's one movie where the directors cut filled in so many different plot holes and tied the film together to flow so much better than what was released in the theater.

OK, I'm just going to chime in here and say that it's not a Director's Cut, it's actually called the Extended Cut, as David Fincher wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.................. ;-)

"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

I agree with Cypher... Fincher planned a much different take for the movie, and was sadly pushed away from his wishes. However, I did like the Extended Cut as well, played out much better for sure.

@cypher: yup...thats pretty much what i posted up top. I can completely understand fincher's anger towards the process and towards the producers who were on his back/jerking him in multiple directions etc, but i dont think the film is the abysmal failure he seems to see it as. We will never know what alien 3 could have been, but i think the film still works (particularly the restored workprint cut). I think it brings some interesting undercurrents into the series and properly punctuates the trilogy (i just kind of ignore alien insurrection). Wreckage and rage (documentary on alien 3) is fantastic. Fincher's refusal to be a part of that documentary really speaks volumes. Anyways... im a big fincher fan. I still think alien 3 is right there with aliens and prometheus as far as films within this franchise that, while not quite as good as alien, are a success.

@Alien DNA - great question! Man, you have to seek out the trailer on your box set!
It seems like "Aliens" led to this simple tease, but truth be told - I think the only way to bring the parasitic nature of the Alien to Earth would be containment gone south.
They touched on it in the fourth flick with the hybrid, but stopping the spread would seem more immediate - very much with your brilliant quote: The xenos seem better suited for outer space and dark corridors, on film anyways.
I think the idea behind what could have been in the story line would center on capturing this potential source, and then trying to keep it from running rampant. Dark corners are the best testament to the ethos created, and I say this ties into "Prometheus" - the idea of whatever the black goo is, unleashed, might have been the intended direction of that trailer.
In any case - I owe ya. I'm now running my brain over what the third movie should have been, based on that teaser trailer - but more importantly, thanks for letting me run my face!
Dig up WIlliam Gibson's take on "Alien 3" - should be on the internet, but it ties into what would have been amazing to see.
