I've been hunting now and then for the whereabouts of the original Derelict filming miniature from Alien.I know Bob Burns acquired it many years ago(along with a ton of other Alien film props and sets)to be kept by him.It was an arrangement made between Bob and the studio to safe house all these movie items in his home. In one of Bobs documentaries you can see the Derelict miniature being wheeled up his driveway on a costume made stand with wheels but thats it.Its never been seen since....then I uncovered this..:0 This is the most recent photo I have found of the filming miniature. Its currently being used as a glorified garden tool storage area...and growing its own culture of moss by the looks of it.. Maybe we could get a petition happening.Get Fox to send it for refurbishing...send it to a museum...send it to a carwash...clean it up...have one of Bobs neighbors kids weed the moss out of it...offer Bob a proper garden shed in trade for the miniature...offer Bob a set of brand new rakes in trade for the miniature... I dunno...does anyone have any ideas or better recent info on this dilemma?

A sad sight indeed :( I'm sure it's in Bob Burns backyard. It was reused for Aliens i know that much. There is also talk of it possibly being sold at an auction a few years ago according to someone on the propsummit forum.

I read that too Xeno_Alpha_07.The picture you posted is assumed to be a prototype of the Derelict miniature. They were thinking of having the Derelict ship with one broken "arm" like the opposite side of the miniature displayed in your picture. Its also assumed that it was the prototype that was sold at auction. Thankyou for the input and please do post anything else you might uncover..in the meantime I'll continue my quest...onwards...wheres my horse?....(que Indiana Jones theme)...I have to prepare for the adventure...the Derelict miniature could be anywhere...or it could just be in Bob Burns backyard...beside his BBQ :(

looking at the photo (sad sight inded) its a dated pic from the late 80's looking at the grill. My parents had a grill like that back in the .... when...... 80s. today grills feed a bigger family, and are mucho larger and hardly ever built with wood slats any more .... IN SEARCH OF ............The Derelict,,,,somebody contact :The "History" channel/lol.great find in either case......kinda like the Big model they used for the filming of Raise the Titanic, its in disarray also........

Here's a link with some info about the original miniature. It's a bit annoying because someone pasted a pic right over the part were it talks about the miniatures whereabouts...To summarize the article states(by deciphering what you can read around the darn pic) that the miniature was sold on Ebay for $47,000.00 .You have to scroll to the bottom of the page to see what I'm talking about. I read somewhere else that it was the prototype that was sold on Ebay...anyway heres the link to my new clue :) ..I'll keep everyone posted..please feel free to add any clues or rumors you may have heard about in regards to the miniatures existence :) Here's the link: http://www2.pbday.org/~trippr/Hobbies/Derelict_Spaceship.html

@djrees56: Just had a look at that link. It credits 'Ron Sorenson ' as the original design for the craft. I've never heard of Ron Sorenson. As to the designer of the original model I believe it was Brian Johnson who designed and built a small prototype model of the derelict. This was built small scale and was the only 'prototype' that I'm am aware of. The larger scale model used for the film, according to a few sources, was i believe done by Dick Budden & Peter Voysey who did the detailing. It's a shame Peter is no longer with us as it would of been fantastic to have him restore the original model. I've looked around the net for past auctions for Alien props and so forth and so far have come up with nothing regarding the derelict.

Guys, It's a wonderment that they let these priceless piece decay and lay in squalor like so much trash. I am so thankful for folks like you that keep these cinematic historical pieces in circulation. djrees56 if there is anything I could do please let me know.

Thanks Patch.Muchly appreciated :) I'm going to attempt to contact Phil Rea.He worked on the Special Effects crew for Alien. He has posted some of his own photos on a fan site and talked about the experience working on the Alien film. He managed to salvage a few parts of some of the huge miniatures that never made it to Bob burns house. He says a lot of things got thrown on a bonfire, but he managed to rescue a few items first. Here's a link to the page were Phil Rea posted his own photos: http://www.eagletransporter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6146 No response from Bob Burns yet... I'll keep everyone posted and if you happen to bump into something about where The Derelict is or might be just drop a line here.Thankyou :)

I received an email from someone claiming to be a friend of Bob Burns. There email explains the picture I posted here and the fate of the Derelict filming miniature.I responded to the email asking if I could post the email I received too this site including my response.I haven't heard back from Steve yet.Included in the email I received was a link to a Profiles in History archives page that I've posted at the bottom of this.It proves that the Derelict was sold in 2005 at auction(you were right Xeno_Alpha :) ) Here's a copy-paste of the correspondence.Like I said I haven't heard back from Steve yet.I've omitted Steve's last name from the email. Hello, > I wanted to drop you a line on behalf of my friend Bob. I'm sure you meant no harm in your inquiry of the Alien derelict ship. However, he was quite upset when he read the thread about the ship and its condition on the link you sent him. > Bob has been a wonderful protector of these props as they were scheduled to be destroyed by the studio. Bob lives in a very modest home and some of the bigger pieces were stored outside under tarps to protect them from the elements. The photo you have was after a storm and they were in the process of cleaning up the ship and recovering it when the photo was taken. > A so called friend/collector offered to help restore the ship as a lot of the clay had fallen off after the production. This person took the ship and after a year Bob was contacted by a friend and was told the derelict was for sale on Profiles In History. He contacted the auction house and they told him he no longer had claim to it. He then contacted the person who sold it and he said he ran out of time and just didn't have the funds to restore it. This person took advantage of the kind and trusting heart of Bob and pocketed a large sum of money. Bob has no idea where it is now. > As you might know The Propstore of London in LA was given the Nostromo by Bob and they restored it to it's original condition. Bob thankfully was able to keep it from being destroyed so it could rise another day years later. It too was stored under a tarp in his back yard. > It would be nice if you would set the record straight on that forum so those people understand that had it not been for Bob these items would not exist. Unfortunately Bob was taken advantage of by someone who pretended to be his friend for monitary gain and the derelict is gone. > When Bob told me about this I have never heard him so upset. > Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you. > I hope you will help to set the record straight. > Best regards > Steve Here's my response: Dear Steve I'd like to express a sincere apology to Mr.Burns.I exploited the mentioned photograph and belitlled Mr.Burns himself in my post in a childish manor.I'd like to say that I never intended to hurt anyone but when I read the way I belittle Mr.Burns in my post,I really should have known better.I'm very sorry for upsetting him. In regards to setting the record straight.Would it be seen as appropriate for me to post your email along with this email of apology onto the Prometheus Community site.I'll edit out the email addresses. I think this would be the best way because your email answers all the questions about the Derelict miniature and the photograph. Please let me know if this is appropriate.Again I sincerely apologize for the foolish way I belittled and upset Mr.Burns. Regards,Dale Here's the link to the Profiles in History archive page detailing the Derelict auction: http://www.proparchives.com/science-fiction/science-fiction-1980s/aliens/large-scale-derelict-ship-set-piece-from-aliens

Fantasic djrees56. Thanks for the update! Well I'm definetly very grateful that Bob Burns had kept, loves and cherishes all the items in his posession. He's been a massive help to many people over the years. Just checked out your link! I was on that web site to lol. Problems was i was looking under the 'Alien' section and not 'Aliens' . That's why i came up with nothing *face-palm* Thanks again mate.

Your welcome Xeno_Alpha. I really appreciated Steve's input...and learned a lesson about "posting manners". Well, onward's we go.Someone paid $40,000 for the miniature 7 years ago. That's serious money. There has to be some word on its where abouts.I'll keep looking around...using a more socially acceptable form of reporting findings.Hopefully this time I won't cause any situations with key elements of our favorite topic here...where's my horse :)

Still nothing new about the Derelict...but I did find the final resting place of the Space Station filming miniature used in 2001:A Space Odyssey. I'll keep looking for the Derelict.Meantime thought it would be interesting to post the fruits of my labors so far. What the Space Station looked like in the 2001:A Space Odyssey film. Well,I haven't forgotten about this.I still tinker around looking for the Derelict miniature. No luck yet...but I did find out what happened to the full size Milleniam Falcon after Episode IV finished filming :) and of course 007 Lotus submarine on display somewhere in England this year(just thought it was cool). I found these pics on a "flicker" photo page. They said it was after filming at Shepperton Studios so I'm assuming its a dump that was close to the studio.I forgot to save the link(oops).

Well, these are the results of my latest search...there's supposedly a Derelict spaceship on the far side of our own moon...its supposedly been there for millions of years..it's also a Nasa cover-up(which explains why this topic is hard to research). This video explains everything...after watching it,I threw up my arms and realized "Of course...its Nasa making it difficult for me to find the whereabouts of the Derelict space craft" ;) All joking to one side here. The video is actually pretty good. Weather its true or not..well,I dunno...but if Nasa did confiscate the Derelict miniature as part of the cover-up, I just hope they try to refurbish it :) Here's the link to the video: http://youtu.be/1b3-S7AqXx0
