Was David on the planet before waking up the crew?

He's a clever dude and figures things out pretty quickly. Remember, he spent two years on the Prometheus figuring out the Engineers' language. And he saw what they were up to in the holographic recording.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

Seems like he knew a lot, keep in mind David is a computer

Remember, David is like a child curious in learning. He also studied about a million books whilst crew was in cryo :)

I am pretty sure that during those 2 years of flight time, David has been watching many films, not just Lawrence of Arabia. One of those has to be Prometheus, hence his knowledge of all the systems built by the engineers. Therefore there is no need for him to be on the planet before the mission actually gets there.
Simple as that.
And I mean he saw the cut scenes, as well.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

Nox, you need more time OFF WORK for sure!
On a more serious, topic-related note though, don't forget that one of the holographs went right through David. God knows what sort of data or information he was able to obtain from that, maybe even without wearing his special Visor!

Any hologram that is able to ruffle one's hair has to carry an AWFUL lot of data.

Exactly my point. The camera was onto that for longer than for the rest of anything from that scene. Ridley/Lindelof wanted us to notice that for a reason so I'm sure there's more to it than meets the eye...
