I liked the engineers - only thise dark eyes are little disconserting.
Just out of curiosity what would you have liked to see ?
Or are you just saying you feel the could have done better ?
I have no artistic!drawing ability so I always admire the folks who can draw and sketch !!! Maybe someone can hook us up with a few alternate sketches of engineers ?

MemberOvomorphSep-20-2012 11:55 PMyes. Im very fond of the engineers (both narratively and in a design sense).

MemberOvomorphSep-21-2012 1:53 AMI have no problem with the muscular-alabaster design of the Engineers because they remind me of Michaelangelo's David sculpture, oh and David Lean made the Lawrence of Arabia film that David loves, oh and David slew Goliath THE GIANT MEGA-CORP his dad runs.
David, David, David; it always has to be about you, doesn't it?
Actually, I do have two obvious gripes:
1) I didn't see SpaceJockey chair as a driver suit, more a grown-together elephant thingy but that's contentious and not what Ridley delivered so I'm up shit creek without a paddle hoping against hope... LOL
2) Engineer looks a bit Mongoloid, to me.
PS: I really like THIS DESIGN, he glows inside and is about the 'expected' size (based on Alien film)

MemberOvomorphSep-21-2012 2:48 PMI'm quite happy with their design. In Alien, I assumed the big guy in the chair was a random alien in his suit, and not necessarily an elephant-like creature. He could of looked like anything underneath that. So I'm happy with their god-like, human-like appearance in Prometheus. And their tech is just amazing!

MemberDeaconSep-21-2012 5:44 PMI dont think they was intended to be Scary or Alien....
I liked the design and i think it fits in well with the plot they are using thats loosely basing the Engineers off the many Ancient Cultures depictions of Gods.
Not talking the Abrahamic Religions but the other many older ones.
That was that we was created and visited by a Race of Giant Star Gods.
I love their look, and i also liked the Engineers.
The only change i would have made would had been to stick to the plan and concepts, the concept works show the Engineers to be between 9-12ft tall.
The idea and some production staff had said that they was 9-10ft tall.
So my disapointment was well if you actually measure and work out the height of the Engineers in Prometheus they range from 7.5ft to 8.5ft and the Last Engineer appears to vary a bit in size depending on what angle and shot he used.
But far to many shots of the Engineer with the Humans did not work out as Ridley's attempt to make him look large failed, this is evident by having him in certain angles and stand on things out of shot to make him appear large to David and Weyland but then the shots when he attacks Ford and Shaw well they show his true height of 7.5ft Tops even in his booster boots.
So i only wished Ridely had done the same camera trickery and effects that we saw used in Lord of the Rings and the Hobit to then show the Engineers as 9ft tall.

MemberDeaconSep-21-2012 5:52 PMAs far as the ideas...
Well Ridley said a long time ago that the Space Jockey was a suit so it was not just a case of making this movie they re-designed it.
Now thats not to say the idea was Humanoid under the suit....
Now Giger said the design was he was part of the chair.
Now i think they changed the design to be Humanoid to fit in with the story which is that these Engineers created us and that the many ancient cultures who depicted gods etc was simply just how they interpreted the Engineers.
The Ancient Astronaut theory, and thing such as the Anunaki Tale from Sumerian and Babylonian Cultures
I actually liked this design that someone did...

But i understand that maybe this sort of design would not fit as well into the story they are trying to tell in Prometheus and thats basically that the Engineers are the Anunaki, the Titans, and Angels etc.

MemberOvomorphSep-22-2012 3:49 PMAnyone who doesn't like the Engineers and their look needs to go forget themselves...
Anyway...
Yeah. I've always loved the Predators. I'm always fascinated by their design. Their look. Their behaviour. And i NEVER, EVER thought ANYTHING would come close.
And, i couldn't have been more wrong...
The Engineers are on par with the Predators. Even beating them to an extent. And that says a lot. Especially considering they're pretty human-like.
Just you wait, the Engineer will go down as a signature movie design, and a signature image of Sci-Fi. Just like the Predators and Xenomorph.
Their complexion. Dark eyes. Suits. Great height. Muscularity. Voice. Everything.
The Engineers are absolute badasses.

MemberFacehuggerSep-22-2012 4:02 PMYes loved the engineers parts pitty about most of the rest :S - but if they are really the old SJ its no were near as good in design - I hope they are different from the old SJ and the elders are the real old SJ woooo!

MemberOvomorphSep-22-2012 7:47 PMIt wouldn't have been hard to make them huge @bigdave. The special effects team made Xerxes larger than life in 300 by having everyone look at a picture at the top of a ten foot pole an then adding him digitally to wherever the line of site was pointing.

I do not like the design.
Alien presented a true alienish figure of sorts, and that was part of the charm/mistery and that was lost (maybe...the sequel must come) with the present design...
Big musculous guys are a very cliche science fiction form...not very orginal in any way, and far less original than the original Space Jockey design.
As for the ancient cultures, some have really weird depictions of Gods, so it was not really necessary...
But the sequel comes...and who knows, we can meet true aliens soon, and find out these ëngineers"are not what it seems right now...
That being said, cool link posted here. Have they gone that way it would have been far more interesting.
Want the tall musculous guys? All right! As bio tools from the true Masters, the Space Jockey race!

MemberOvomorphSep-22-2012 9:45 PMi'll have to agree with everything Voidhawk said , i liked the engineers look but it could have been much much more, i think they should have been separate beings , the space jockey design in alien, was truly "ALIEN" after all didn't it originate from the very guy who originally designed the alien world?

MemberOvomorphSep-22-2012 10:31 PMNah. Screw that. Engineers reign supreme.
:P
Yeah, they could maybe introduce what we believe to be the "Annunaki" out of context to ancient history. In relation to the Engineers being their servants who rebelled. The Igigi.
I'm still gonna be an Engineer nut-swinger no matter what...
The only thing they need to do in regards to the Engineers is explore them more. We need to see them in action more. Showing more emotion. We need to see them feel.
We need to see their society.

MemberOvomorphSep-23-2012 3:29 AM@Pren, you seriously are happy with how the Space Jockey from Alien turned out to just be a suit? Personally, that was perhaps the biggest let-down of the movie for me, and the only reason for this unveiling was apparently to facilitate putting the engineers into a story that didn't have or need them previously, i.m.o.

Voidhawk
MemberOvomorphSep-23-2012 10:30 AMI agree with you Shawluv:D
For me it was also a big letdown, after the traillers and all...
It took off a lot of the old mistery from that haunting scene in the first Alien, and if you think it was that (at that time) scenery support that created a whole myth around it (lets get real, it was not RS idea at that time. He was shooting a Monster Movie. He rode the wave after the success, and if we should give credits it should be to Giger and the props guys for all this) then it was an undeserved downgrade.
Put some of the proposed images of the living Space Jockey beside an Engineer...not a chance for the muscle guy with an unhealthy skin colour...
Humanoid centered aliens are something true science fiction fans try to avoid and is a kind of egocentric view anyways...
The Giants from many ancient cultures on Earth are not necessarily humans, and the most haunting images from ancient lithograps have totally inhuman appearances, some weird and some scary. Those came from really old imaging and they could have gone that road instead of the cliche, old "big guy with a different skin", which was why that first Space Jockey impressed us back in Alien, with its innovative and original depiction of an alien and his tecnology
Anyway now we get that ...and hopefully we will see a different story in the next movie, and even learn that these Engineers are but a minor part of what the true Elders are, and a bio-tool at that (which is hinted heavily along the movie)

MemberDeaconSep-23-2012 3:38 PMWell you see lets look really at what the Engineer could had been prior to Prometheus.
Now Ridley did hint a long long time before Prometheus it was a Space Suit and that it was a Bomber carrying a Bio Weapon Cargo.
Now if it was a suit that does not mean that the concept could have been that the Space Jockey was some more Alien looking Race than the Engineer. So yes maybe its a suit maybe its a helmet like in Prometheus or maybe its not fully a helmet and maybe only the Snorkel is part of a suit and thus we get something like this without it.

Or maybe something like this...

I like this one though....

Or maybe something more like a Bio Organic look like the Xeno..

So if the Space Jockey looked like any of the above or more Tapir i.e its the Skeleton of a Giant Creature whos head is like this fellas..

Then what story do we have about them?
That they are some Alien Race from Far Away who are at War with another Race or maybe even their own kind and that the Xeno is a Bio Weapon that it was carrying.
Thus the story would be about some Alien Race who created/engineered or came across the Xeno to use as a Bio Weapon, maybe it would tell of who this race is in detail and who they are at War with.
Maybe tell why they created the Xeno or had it.
I think Lindeloff came along and pitched the idea that what if the Space Jockey was a Ancient Race who created Mankind and that the many Ancient Cultures who depicted and worshiped Giants Humanoid Beings from Space as Gods, were simply worshiping these Space Jockeys.
To fit in with that story they designed the Space Jockeys and Engineer Humanoid Race in Space Suits and thus they now have a Race that created life on Earth from Basic Organisms, a Race who have been around for Millions or years and who would have no doubt played a part in the creation and modification of life on any number of worlds across the Galaxy.
I think thats huge Scope for a Franchise.

MemberOvomorphSep-23-2012 4:07 PMI had already predicted that it would most likely have been an organic suit of some kind, anyway.
And if it was a letdown to some people, it's not nearly as big of a disappointment as the entire movie itself, anyway...
Also, muscularity, typical in sci-fi? Heeeell naw.
Big heads, skinny arms. That's what you expect from sci-fi.
I love the Engineers and their design. The dark eyes, the skin tone and complexion. It's perfect.
And who knows... knowing what the Engineers are all about, they might even have enhanced themselves when we see their home planet. Or "upgraded" themselved genetically...
Watch, i'll call it :D.
There are true Space Jockey Engineers. With the actual suit being a part of their natural body :D.
It wouldn't surprise me. If we see it in the sequel.

MemberOvomorphSep-24-2012 8:04 PMI don't think i could be a bigger fan of the engineer's design.

MemberOvomorphSep-25-2012 9:34 PMin the art of book it is stated that they wanted the suit to look organic in a way that once they wear it, it melds into their skin becoming one, much like the pressure suit the last engineer was wearing, that seems like a more feasible idea.
