MemberOvomorphOct-31-2012 3:40 AMMy girlfriend is having a birthday/Halloween party this coming weekend and as with all Halloween parties the most important criteria is that everyone wears a costume.
I had a really hard time coming up with something good to wear, because to be honest, I don't like wearing costumes.
But then last Sunday I remembered that a while ago, I came across this awesomely made Chestburster costume. So needless to say, as a die-hard Alien fan, I decided that this year, I will be dressing up as Kane.
So yesterday after work, I sat my ass down in front of a big chunk of clay. And started sculpting. It took a little longer than I thought it would have, so today, I'm pretty tuckered out just fighting to stay awake at work.
But anyhow, here's the clay-sculpture I ended up with. Today I will be trying to make a rubber-mold of it and mold a latex version of it. I will post more pics as soon as I get more done to it. :)

Oh, if someone who happens to see this has any experience to molding latex, I'd really appreciate it if you shared your thoughts! I'm pretty new to the whole molding thing, so any advice is welcome! :)

MemberOvomorphOct-31-2012 4:38 PMAllright, well as I expected, everything didn't really go as planned. First of all; when I got home, I realized my cat had found the sculpture and apparently he had found it threatening. So he went for the head, as you can see in the following picture.

So I had to fix the damages quickly before I could start molding. Luckily, the clay hadn't dried all through, so I could easily apply some more clay to the holes. (Note to self, next time: Leave sculptures on high shelves.)
After a quick-dry in the oven, I could start planning the vessle in which to make the mold. I decided to go with a wire-fence/plasticbag/duct-tape cocoon thingy. It did seem like a good idea.

Next, I melted the molding rubber. Everything went smoothly, until I realized, there wasn't enough molding rubber... -.- In fact there was just enough to cover the bottom part of it. But not the head.

So I had to break the bag, take out the rubber and the sculpture, strip it of all the excess rubber. And try to come up with a better plan.
So now a couple of minutes ago, I ended up taking the tail of the base and filling an old tin-can with the rubber paste and dipping the whole chestburster body into it. On the package of the rubber it said that it gets firm better in a low temperature, so I put everything outside to cool off. I think I'll leave it out there until tomorrow morning. Hopefully tomorrow won't be filled with as many mishaps as today. I'm off to bed. Goodnight.

MemberOvomorphNov-01-2012 3:55 PMDay 3 of the project. And so far so good. Woke up this morning, went outside to check on the mold, which seemed as if it had firmed up just as it should. Went to work, and left it outside to the rest of the day.
When I got home, I opened the tin can by cutting down the side of it. In front of me stood a big gelatinous cylinder. My first plan was to cut down through it to the sculpture, so that I could get the sculpture out in one piece. But to my surprise, the thick layer of vaseline I had rubbed on to the sculpture before emerging it in the rubber, did it's job extremely well, and I could pull out the chestburster without harming the mold at all.

Next, I poured liquid latex into the mold. As it is a pretty small mold, I filled it up to the rim. I let it stay in the mold for about 10min, while having a lamp keeping the mold warm. Then I pulled out the excess latex, which didn't stick to the mold yet. I let this thin layer dry for about a half an hour. Then repeated the pouring and warming procedure. All in all I think I did this 4 times today and I will probably do it a couple of times tomorrow too.

As for now, it looks like it's about to turn out pretty good. Tomorrow I'll fill the inside of it with gel-wax, for a wobbly more life-like effect. Tomorrow I will also have to paint it, so that it get's time to dry before saturday, yikes! My schedule is pretty tight. I realize that now.. Should have realized it a week ago.. Ah well..

MemberOvomorphNov-02-2012 7:19 PMAlmost there! It's been a long 4 days, but I can gladly announce that my costume is almost done! And it isn't even Saturday yet!
Today I bought some gel-wax from my local hobby store. I melted it and poured it into the latex "chestburster-sock" and let it cool outside for a half an hour. Then I sealed the top with more latex so that the gel-wax wouldn't slip out. Again I used my desk lamp to warm the latex so that it would dry quicker.

Of course this time I also forgot to check on the mold constantly, so the lamp made this happen:

While I was waiting for everything to dry, I started making the Weyland shirt. I took an old white worn-out t-shirt that I decided this project was worth sacrificing for. I printed the weyland corp logo (Yes I know weyland-yutani in Alien. But the Weyland corp logo has fewer details.) and cut out the letters and the logo so that I could easily transfer it onto the shirt.

Next I made the teeth for the burster. I took some cocktail-sticks from the kitchen, because they were the only pointy things that were small enough and in my reach.

After this, I painted the chestburster with a light brown, fleshy, creamy acrylic paint, mixed with some of the latex, to make it more elastic.
I took the tail of the sculpture, because I couldn't come up with a way to make a latex tail in under 12h.
I glued all the pieces with a hot-glue gun to a thick cardboard base. The lumps around the chestburster are pieces of styrofoam. I needed to get something around the chestburster that would look like meaty bits and pieces.
I gave it another layer of that creamy acrylic paint, and painted the surroundings black. Next I started to add red, to resemble blood. To be honest, I just splashed it across the whole damn thing and I think it came out pretty well. Tomorrow I'll give it some finishing touches, and maybe a layer of glue, so that the "blood" will look like it's dripping and running.

Wow.. I just hope it stays in one piece.. But a glue-gun is a close cousin to duct-tape, it fixes everything. Yes?

MemberOvomorphNov-04-2012 8:58 AMOnhan se vähän joo :D arvaa vaan jos ite hihittelin sille monta kertaa tän prokkiksen aikana. Lateksihöyryillä on ehkä voinut olla jokin vaikutus... :D
Thank you. It did turn out rather well, but sadly it did loose some of the details. But after a few coats of paint, you couldn't really tell what part was what, so the loss of details wasn't that big a problem.
Actually I think it's highly possible that I'll give molding another shot pretty soon. It's been a really fun week making a chestburster of my own and in the end, making a prop like this, wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. The only question is WHAT to make next? :)
So yesterday I started the day with giving my costume it's final detailing and the last touches it needed to be complete and awesome.
I realized the coat of red I painted it with the night before, was a little too heavy. It didn't look like fresh blood, but instead as coagulated blood which really didn't look too good. So I gave it another coat of cream.

Because I was too lazy to go and buy fake-blood, I had to come up with a way of creating a coat that had that shiny drippling look, like fresh blood. I tried several different mixtures of water, paint, latex, glue etc. and ended up with just mixing a lot of water into the paint so that it didn't stick to just one place, but rather ran across the whole chestburster.

I ripped a hole in the shirt, and painted around it to make it look like it was drenched in blood. I also splashed some red paint across the shirt by dipping a brush in the paint and then pulling back the hairs on the brush so that it sprayed all over the shirt.

Next I had to figure out how to make it stick to my chest. After several plans on making straps that would run around my back and shoulders, I ended up taking one of my girlfriends sports-bras (felt really manly wearing womens underwear during the party..) and folding a piece of cardboard to which I glued a piece of jeans-fabric from a pair of old jeans. I stuck the cardboard piece down against my chest and the chestburster "came alive" haha.
All in all the party was a great success! I had really fun, and I believe everyone who participated also did. Sadly, only a few people really understood my costume. But when I said "have you never seen Alien" most of them replied with a "aah now I see".

Ei mut siis tyhjät tölkit on oivallisia telineitä esim tollasille pihdeille jos odottaa jonkun kuivumista. :D (Ja kyllähän ne täydetkin tölkit jossain määrin myös auttaa..)
Thanks a lot! :D I just wonder if anyone else has seen this, since no one else but you has commented.. Ah well, maybe someone stumbles upon it sometime.. :)
