Whabe David saves Shaw, Holloway and the Enginer's head was saves during the storm,,it was interesting to see what happenned when they were in the hanger. Hallowayditat says to Shaw she could have compromised the entire mission,,then says Shw could have been killed herself! David. after pushing a few buttons, asks Shaw if she was alright. Holloway ius Mission first..then Shaw's safety David asks about Shaw about her condition but her response was curiuos, She answers "Yes"...but adds "Thank you David".. THe David/Shaw exchange is ok by me because it is David's way of manipulating Shaw to believing that he has a concern for her...falsely I suspect. However Holloway's first expressed concern was the safety of the mission.....before her condition. Did Holloway go back out in the storm to save the Engineer's head,,,or save Shaw,,his soul mate..? I mention all fo this because in the subsequent scene with the 'exploding Head', Holloway is getting liquered up during what could be a climatic moment..especially if the Engineer's head starts to speak out,

I think David was merely being polite. Something we are all 'programmed' with. As for Charlie "i'm going to pop off my helmet on a strange planet" Holloway; i think this scene was just to make watching his death a little easier/more digestible. He's actually a prick the entire movie. I hate the actor and the character. Still love the movie, though...good thing they killed him off!

David is showing genuine concern — if that's an appropriate word that can be used to describe a robot's state of mind — when he asks Shaw if she is alright. He asks the question simply because Holloway singularly failed to ask it, and it was a question that needed asking. Holloway didn't really care about the severed head at all. He ignored it completely in the Big Head Room and was already half drunk when Shaw & Ford conducted their experiments. Despite his faults, he did love Shaw, and it was she whom he went after. He's just a bit of a prat and doesn't express himself very well.
David. after pushing a few buttons, asks Shaw if she was alright.
That's typical android envy all over again. David easily shows up Holloway as a drama queen, undeserving of the weiner in his pants. There's a whole theme between them throughout the film and the money shot is when Holloway starts to get sick on his way back out and he starts staring at David who says something like "goodluck, gentleman". Holloway is pretty much a fool up until that point. I don't think he had any alterior motives by saving Shaw -- that's his woman. He's just saying, "if you won't think of me, think of the mission".

There are several points of view on this little scene..It did not occur to me that David was showing off in front of Holloway, Since David could,,he did. Holloway certainly did change quite a bit from the mission briefing..to his self sacrifice..in flames. At some point he realize he was not meeting his maker,,,and then just goes 'WTF?" His interest in the mission yhen get's lost,,,has a few drinks for the road,,,loses his Scientific mind,by knowing that something is terribly wrong,,with the liquid draining fron his eye..and then jeoparizes the whole mission by going with the landing crew back to the tunnels.
