Prometheus: science vs. pseudo-science

While Dr. Shaw, she archaeologist, is now experimenting (medically) in the lab on the Engineer's head, her love-interest Dr. Holloway, also archaeologist, is sitting bent over on a bench in the background sulking & emptying a bottle ( of bubbly perhaps ? ). so, when the Engineer head explodes ( applying 30-40 Amps of electricity to regenerate growths in stasis on the head ... by sticking a thick needle into the flesh ) he jumps off the bench ... and (behold) disappears. then, next scene shows him ( this time his own ) head on the pool table, grey sweat shirt hood pulled over his head. David-8 enters & ironically asks if he is out of drink and surreptiously spikes his glass with goo from the Engineers' vessel. down the hatch, Dr. Holloway empties his glass. but, it's Dr. Holloway's demeanour that puzzles an audience. Is he saddened but why ? and, if so, by what ? they have just made contact with an alien race some +39 light-years from Earth, a race whose DNA/RNA seemingly remsembles ours. what therefore is the motive for his depressed state ? maybe an experienced psychologist of human behaviour of 2093, human behaviour after deep space travel, could elucidate Dr. Holloway's attitude a tad ? humbly, one would submit, as a scientist, as archaeologist, should Dr. Holloway not be ecstatically upbeat ? Just before the 200 Km/hr storm hits, inside the vessel's tunnel, it was Holloway, sorry Dr. Holloway, who beat his chest in bravour and recklessly removes his helmet drowned out by a crescendo of loud calls: "no, no don't do it", leave your helmet on ! Dr. H. even disobeys a direct order to leave it on from the Prometheus. is Dr. Holloway a scientist or a pseudo-scientist ? where does he come from psychologically ?

In Prometheus, the destination star system is not identified. A distance of 327,000,000,000,000 km is given, which translates as 34.56 light-years. Given that Zeta Reticuli's distance has been estimated with a strong degree of accuracy (the error margin is only 0.1 light-years), this would seem to confirm that LV-422 is not only a different planetoid to the one in Alien and Aliens, but is located in a totally different star system altogether. Some fans have postulated that LV-422 is located at Gliese 86, a star just under 35 light-years away in the constellation of Eridanus. This is especially popular as an extrasolar gas giant was discovered circling Gliese 86 in 2000. Gliese 86 and Zeta Reticuli are located in the same general neighbourhood, only being separated from one another by 10 light-years. got an idea: anything goes, topsy-turvy, logic or no logic ... sci-fi flics redefined: no science & all fiction ... from here on it's P-Sci-Fi = pseudo-science & fiction ? so what's the fine thin line that separates belief from disbelief in a story ? well, e.g., when sci-fi flics redefine the speed of light one steps into disbelief - since grade-schoolers have dutifully learned 35 light yr distance takes 35 yrs to get there - if one could travel at light speed. and Zeta II Reticuli, a binary star system in the southern constellation Reticulum, is + 35 light yrs from Earth. The Prometheus (needless to say, a great-looking ship) jumps the distance of 35 light yrs to LV-223 in 2 yrs. We are told at the beginning of the P1 that the Zeta II star system is 3.27 x 10 to the 14th km from Earth ... or 35 light yrs. another technology item of 2093/ 2094 ... was it not Dec. 31, 2093 when David & Dr. Shaw set off for the Engineer homeland in an alien vessel ? so, what about the hyper(drive) sleep pods required for their travel ? the existing hyperpods in the Engineer vessel they have taken are not constructed for humans. Granted, perhaps David-8 is capable of modifying them ...
