I noticed alien was on the telly and decide to watch it for about the twenty fifth time. There was a scene just after Dallas and the others had left to go to the derelict. Ripley asked ash about the transmission, she inquired if he had "put it throught the ECIU". The ECIU was also mentioned in the weyland files too. This suggests that the ECIU maybe translation software.

Its got to be an artificial intelligence translation algorithm. Of course one of the beautiful techniques in writing sci fi is to leave an undefined acronym so it stimulates the imagination of the viewer or reader, depending on the media. Its a literary device to add validity to a story. Hope this helps.
