Engineer Background

They have been around for at least 35,000 years according to the cave painting discovered by Holloway and Shaw. They have the ability to travel through space. They returned to Earth numerous times to teach various civilizations an unknown number of things. 2000 years ago an attempt was made by the Engineers to deliver a large amount of “black goo” to earth. Accepting these premises indicate the Engineers would have distributed themselves around the known universe and have settled on many planets. This is especially probable giving their ability to terraform. On Earth, there are many religions and many different groups within religions. There is no reason to believe the engineers are any different. In fact, it is even more likely due to a group of like minded engineers being able to travel to a new planet to start their own colony.
This is what I believe happened on LV-223. A small group of engineers whose religious beliefs included worshiping the xenomorphs, set up installations to produce the “black goo”. Given the amount of canisters in the installation and the number of ships, it is safe to assume Earth was not the only planet targeted for infection. Rather than an accident occurring and the group of engineers killing each other, it is more likely another group of engineers, who did not want the population on earth transformed, sabotaged the cargo causing the outbreak. The Engineers on LV-223 were able to create this black goo from start to finish without having an accident. They do not seem to be an accident prone people. Not saying it could not happen, just that is is pretty coincidental right before taking off to destroy Earth an accident occurred killing all the would be bombers.
There is another group of Engineers we do know of for sure. This is the group of “seeders” in the opening scene of the film. This group of Engineer seem to share very little with the group on LV-223. The dress different (robes vs. biosuits), have a different ship, and nurture the life they created on Earth rather than destroy it. Visits to earth, depicted in the cave drawings, depict the engineers communicating with the population. Showing them where they came from and presumably teaching them language and a number of other things.
Why would this group of Engineer suddenly decide they were going to destroy what they spent so much time nurturing? The short answer is they would not, but another group with a different set of beliefs would. There is a chance that the visitors to Earth found disfavor with their creation and decided it was time to destroy it. I find this unlikely due to the fact the installation on LV-223 was untouched after the “accident.” 2000 years passed and no other Engineers went to see what happened. This supports the theory that the population of Engineers on LV-223 were acting independently. Carrying out their own agenda, and not that of the seeders. With a race that has been around for so long, and having the ability to disperse throughout the universe, one would almost certainly assume there is going to be conflict among the race.
Implications for Prometheus 2
This would lead to an excellent setting in Prometheus 2 as Shaw and David try to find the Engineers’ home world. Presumably it will be easy to find due to David being able to fly the ship and read the maps. What they find there I will leave up to the genius of the writers of the film and Ridley Scott. I would like to see the conflict between factions of Engineer as part of the plot. As well as action sequences with Engineers fighting with other Engineers and Engineers fighting xenomorphs.
