While being asleep, she has another dream of her father talking to her young self about Paradise. He describes Paradise as a beautiful place full of wonderful creatures called angels where people live happily next to God. He wants Shaw to remember that God loves us all because we are His children. The whole environment begins to change, darkness falls and a weird mist covers everything. Suddenly, Shaw’s father screams in pain and grabs his chest. In a matter of seconds, an alien squid such as the one seen in Prometheus bursts out of the man’s chest, while his daughter watches intimidated (I would love if the sequel had that kind of disturbing imagery).
We are quickly transferred to the real world, where dr Shaw is awakened by David. His head is now back in its place. It is implied that dr Shaw helped him fix the damage some time ago. David informs Shaw that they have almost reached their destination. “It’s a planet” David says. A lonely planet with a sun, fully capable of sustaining life is ahead of them. What sets it apart however from other planets is the fact that one part of it stays permanently in the dark (There is a reason for everything). Shaw, more curious than ever, goes to see the planet by herself, but what she sees instead is rather unexpected. Two alien ships similar to the one seen at the beginning of the first movie (not the other type) are right in front of them. Shaw tries to warn David, but is not quick enough. After having taken a direct hit, their ship crushes in the small planet. Luckily, they both manage to survive.
Shaw does not feel very well, but she knows they have to keep moving. As they try to leave the remains of the alien spaceship, they are approached by four Engineers, who hold them captive. The Engineers immobilize Shaw and put a blue liquid inside her ears. Much to her surprise she is now able to understand every single word they say (I tried to find a way to have them interact with dr Shaw since I would not like David to translate the entire time). “We must take them to the Elder one” says one of them. “He is the one to decide what their fate shall be”. Then, due to all the exhaustion, the pain and the suffering she has been through, Shaw collapses.
As her senses slowly return, she realizes they have entered a large room full of sculptures and murals of Engineers. David, who stays next to her, focuses on one mural in particular. The mural shows some Engineers worshiping an Alien creature, which stands in a crucified position (Same as the one Holloway had found in Prometheus). “How interesting.” he whispers.
After that scene, which raises perhaps even more questions, we finally get a look at the Elder Engineer in all his glory. He is basically just like the rest of them, only larger and older. His attitude however is not the one expected, as he asks our protagonists to forgive him for the way they were treated. He explains that his kind had not seen that kind of space ship David and Shaw had stolen from LV-223 since the Great War. (We are going to learn more about the war later). Elizabeth then asks the Engineer who they really are. He replies: “We are eternal beings with extreme power and intelligence…but we are no Gods, if that’s what you’re asking”. He refers to himself as a scientist just like the rest of the Engineers. As the discussion goes on, we also learn more information about the black goo. The Engineer describes it as the ultimate weapon. He explains that this black substance destroys whoever consumes it, devastating their entire DNA and corrupts whoever touches it, turning them into a deadly killing machine (There. Satisfied? If you want more, keep reading…)
Shaw asks the Elder one why the Engineers created us but she gets a rather confusing answer. “Your creation. Our survival”. David smiles after hearing this but Shaw does not seem to understand. She keeps insisting, but the Elder one refuses to give any more explanations about the origins or the destruction of mankind. As a result, Shaw becomes frustrated and attempts to hurt him but is stopped by one of the other Engineers. The Elder Engineer laughs and says “Stupid child! Did you really think we ever cared the slightest about human kind? Humanity was always meant to die, since the beginning of its creation.” He then orders his men to imprison both Shaw and David. The Engineers grab our protagonists from their heads and drag them to their cage, where they would spend the rest of their lives. Unfortunately for them, they have underestimated David’s intelligence, since he manages to get loose and free Shaw in less than an hour.
David and Shaw run for their lives, but something draws David’s attention and makes him stop. He stands still and stares at a large door showing the exact same Alien creature in a crucified position. Shaw begs him to keep running but he is just too curious to find out what is on the other side. Suddenly, out of nowhere, David hears a woman screaming and begging for her life and opens the door. Shaw, who also hears the screams, comes to see as well (This is it!).
As they walk inside, they make a shocking discovery. The Engineers are conducting experiments with the black goo and they use humans as guinea pigs. Shaw watches alien creatures bursting out of people’s bodies, while the Engineers study them carefully. Every single person there is getting massacred, from old men to small innocent children. David however does not seem surprised at all. When Shaw asks him why they are doing such a horrendous thing, he replies “It seems they are trying to create something. This… creature we saw earlier in that door.” Shaw throws up. She then leaves as fast as she can, David follows her and they both return to their cage, before they get noticed by anyone else.
There, they discover something else, even more interesting. Shaw and David are not the only ones imprisoned by the Engineers, since another Engineer is held captive inside a similar cage. He wears a very thick armor and a battle damaged helmet with two large horns (Evil). The Engineer asks them to release him and in return he would help them get out of the planet safe. Shaw, although she does not trust him at all and knows he would probably betray them, decides to make a deal with him. His freedom for the answers she so desperately wanted. The Engineer immediately starts talking (ANSWERS!!!)
He explains that the Engineers used the black goo to conquer entire worlds without putting a single fight. Nothing could possibly stop them. Nothing apart from death, of course. Some of their ships crushed while carrying this dangerous cargo (Perhaps that happened in LV-426) and this is when they begun to realize the sad truth. They were mortal. Sure they could live forever, but they could also be killed. They had no genre, so they were unable to reproduce. They soon became the last of their kind, an endangered species.
They tried every possible way to make their bodies incorruptible but failed. Having nothing else to lose, they created their own religion. Since they could not help themselves, only a God could save them from extinction. They prayed for years, made sacrifices but God never showed up. In the end, believing that God never existed, they decided to create one and they used their biggest creation to do so, the black goo. The first stage was quite simple. Warms were used as subjects. Greatly affected by the black goo, the warms mutated into different kinds of deadly organisms (Face huggers?), each with an alien embryo inside. Unfortunately, in order for the embryos to survive, a host was needed. The Engineers had lost enough members of their kind so another species should replace them. They sent one of them to a distant planet, where he consumed some of the black goo. Through his sacrifice, mankind was born and hope was still there.
Unluckily, the events that followed were devastating. The human race was developing really fast, unlike anything the Engineers had ever seen. Some of them, including him, feared that at one point the humans would become the superior species and thus a threat to the Engineers. They sent warnings all over the earth showing them pointing at the stars where their entire weaponry had been (warnings not invitations like Shaw had believed). This however did not stop the evolution of mankind. The Engineers who were consumed by their fear of the humans betrayed their brothers and set to destroy the entire humanity. War was inevitable, a civil war between the Engineers who hated humanity and the ones who saw it as a chance for them to survive. In the end and after years of death and destruction, the last prevailed and casted the “traitors” into the dark side of the planet, where nothing grows. He on the other hand, who was their leader, was put in this humiliating position. The others just kept trying to create their God, travelling to earth and abducting people for their experiments, like nothing changed (And that’s pretty much it).
That moment, Shaw remembers something David had said in the previous film. “Sometimes to create, one must first destroy”. She suspects that David already knew some of the information the Engineer gave them and kept it a secret. Shaw now feels depressed, she has lost all hope and she can’t trust anyone, not even David. Believing that there is nothing else to lose, Shaw frees the Engineer, who injures David and knocks her down with a single punch. He then walks towards her and thanks her for her services. It is revealed that he plans to awaken all the remaining Engineers, who were casted into the darkness and are now in a state of hibernation. Shaw passes out for a moment but luckily David is there to “restore” her.
In the meantime, the Evil one looks for a possible exit and kills whoever gets in his way (Yeah, this how I decided to call him. If you come up with a better name please leave a comment). Many Engineers try to stop him but they all get killed in the process. He is just too powerful. He manages to find a way out of the building, but is approached by the Elder one and a colossal battle starts between them. It takes some time, but the Elder one manages to decapitate him. Now both Shaw and David will have to face the Elder one’s wrath.
The Elder Engineer forces our protagonists to kneel before him. He blames them for the death of all those Engineers and he orders his “men” to kill them instantly. However, David interferes and politely suggests that the Elder one takes back his order. He says that without his assistance, the Elder one will never be able to find his God. The Engineer laughs ironically, but his mood quickly changes when David becomes more specific. David explains to the Engineer that his God has inherited the DNA of a male and a female human being, as well as the DNA of an Engineer. He then gives a detailed description of some previews events that occurred: He talks about how he infected dr Holloway, who later had sexual intercourse with Shaw, which resulted in her giving birth to an alien squid that used one of the Engineers as host for the Alien embryo. He seems to know pretty much everything that happened in LV-223. Shaw looks at David with her misty eyes. She is shocked to learn that he is responsible for Holloway’s Death. Shaw asks him why he did this and he replies: “I was… curious. I wanted to ensure that my theories where correct.” Probably for the very first time, David shows an emotion, as he seems to have regretted his past actions (Perhaps David is more human than we think huh?).
The Engineer admires David’s confidence and artificial intelligence and promises his freedom considering that he guides them to their God. David accepts, but only if Elizabeth is spared her life. After they finally make an agreement, David, Shaw, the Elder one and the rest of the Engineers board inside another space ship, a brand new model that is capable of taking them to LV-223 in just a few hours. During that time, David tries to earn Shaw’s trust back, but she still sees him as a betrayer. Time passes and they soon land in LV-223, where they find the remains of the ship Prometheus.
As they walk inside, they find out that the Deacon has laid eggs. The Elder one does not look pleased, as he supposes that David has led him to a trap. On the spur of the moment, one of the eggs hatches only to reveal a strange type of facehugger that manages to attach itself in one of the Engineers. The others abandon him, thinking he is already doomed and after destroying the rest of the eggs, they chase after David and Shaw, who have already run away. While running, David’s foot gets stuck and he asks Shaw to help him. She hesitates and asks him why she should after everything he has done. He replies “Please, forgive me. I want… to live”. (David is now more human than ever) Elizabeth decides to put her hatred aside and help him, but the Engineers are heading toward them and are now very close. Fortunately for them, the Deacon appears (which has now evolved and looks more like an Alien Queen, only bigger). It attacks the Engineers, who killed its precious eggs, while our protagonists take advantage of this opportunity and leave as fast as they can. The Elder Engineer can be heard saying “This is no God. This is hell incarnated!” before the Deacon stabs him with its tale and finishes him with its second jaw.
Shaw and David get inside the Engineer’s space ship just in time. The last thing they hear from LV-223 is the Deacon screaming full of rage. A few minutes later, Shaw asks David what will come next, now that this creature has inhabited LV-223. He replies “We clearly saw that this thing has the ability to lay eggs, although it is probably the first of its kind. I suppose after a long period of time the entire planet will belong to them. They will probably make it their home world”. (The Xenomorph’s home world. Enough said!). Afterwards, David thanks Shaw for saving his life and points out that what she did back there was God like. She smiles and says that they can finally go home.
THE END.
