I've dug out my DVD of Planet of The Vampires, been years since I watched it!
I knew there were many similarities to A L I E N, and Prometheus, as NOOB said it's uncanny!
Bava made his film with a $100,000 budget. He never had trouble finding backers for his projects as they usually came in under budget and were guaranteed to recoup a healthy profit.
He was a great stylist. Whilst some of the ropey special effects equate to their low budget, and mid sixties era, his background as a cinematographer is evident in the composition of scenes, dark, foggy and mirroring comic book pulp with the use of vibrant colours. It's a wonderfully atmospheric and creepy experience.
Many comparisons could be made with regards to Mario Bava and Ridley Scott!
