Very little is known about them but at some point the colonists of Arcturus, effectively cut off contact with Earth in favour of living with the indigenous Arcturians.  The ones the marines talk about may be indigenous or colonists.

I always thought it was an interesting piece of world building.Is this covered in The Weyland Yutani report?

Perhaps also a little nod to the 'love' scene from the Dan O'Bannon-Moebius illustrated The Long Tomorrow......

NINXENO426 - Oh, gosh! This will be a most interesting topic! I happen to remember a very brief article within a Science Fiction magazine that detailed the Arcturians within the film, Aliens. According to James Cameron, the Arcturians were never fully detailed in order to build mystery. However, he did state, if my memory still serves me well, the Arcturians were very "pretty" - men and women alike. As such, it could be easy for a lonely space marine to mistake one of the more feminine-looking men for a woman! :)

LONE - O'Bannon is a genius in his representations of satire and dark comedy. We need more creative intellects such as his! :: 

"Except the one you had was a male!" "It doesn't matter when it's Arcturian!" It does make a lot of sense when you start putting things together.I've been wondering what the hell they were talking about for years.

I'm already getting a strong Moebius vibe from the AC trailer, as strong as Prometheus if not stronger. The more you consider it, the more you see it. Speaking of which, nice choice of LT frame, you naughty girl.

I wish people would quit fretting over the shower scene and relax, this movie is gonna rock on all levels I think.

AORTA - Individuals whom are displeased with the shower scene are simply latching onto something to dislike simply for the sake of disliking it. People these days seem to be addicted to annoyance and nitpicking. :)

What i mean is that if these things are transgender/lady boys,then these guys are able to look past all that.They seem pretty comfortable with the fact that they are not 100 percent female,which is pretty cool.

NINXENO426 - You are mistaken. They were not alright with it, which is why they were making fun of the situation. They were comfortable enough in their sexuality and friendship to be goofy about the implications. It had nothing whatsoever to do with what you refer to as "Gender Barriers".

Ridley has said that as far as he was concerned, casual sex - heterosexual or homosexual - would be common among deep space crews.
