In Defense of Dr. Charlie Holloway.

In space, you can’t hear people mock your scarf and flip-flops outfit.

I agree that in the history of cinema that that there has been no better candidate for the immediate use of a flamethrower on than Dr. Charlie Holloway. This view still stands when noting Zombie movies. Yes, fry the zombies but only after Charlie.

I have read criticisms of Logan Marshall-Green’s acting but I really do think he nailed it.

I apologize for the disgusting nature of the above photograph.

Dr. Holloway is shown spoiled, drunk, and pouting after the arrival on LV-223 did not include an Engineer parade (inconsiderate dead Engineer photo below) and someone handing him a pamphlet showing how he was created (and he only has time for pagan explanations). How familiar this image above has been as a reflection in my mirror…scary.

Can we admit that Dr. Holloway performed the biggest fumble in humanity’s history?

Dr. Holloway’s “anything and everything” definition of boundaries removed all restraint from David.

If I was asked by David 8 at the pool table why we (his creator) chose to create him I would tell him he was made in an attempt to reach our dreams in a way that we could not without him with tears in my eyes.

Then I would say I needed to puke (he would want to wait to put black goo in my drink hopefully) and run strait to Captain Janek. I would ask Captain Janek if there was a performance bonus for letting David experiment on members of the crew we didn’t like. If no bonus, then we would have to dust off the “Let’s waste the robot” plans.

These grotesque displays of spoiled pouting, I believe, brought the viewer into the place where the flamethrower was the best idea ever. I strongly believe Logan Marshall-Green should have won an award (or all of them) for this display. When I saw this display it was as if we were intra-century twins.

Any criticism of the above content is your welcome opinion. Please do not be vulgar.

LMG fan group member #2 here- funny pictures of the expressions. So Ati what's his role in the Alien Covenant?  Maybe he's just a stand in lip / ankle enhancement?  Ha

He could be a visible spirit Obi-Wan Kenobi-style. But the armed crew members of The Covenant should conserve their ammo against aliens instead....

And you got on to me for bringing that up in the Yutani thread.

Now, we have to have some maturity boundaries Rick and I wanted to prove I can field an opposite opinion (guaranteed with Dr. Holloway) and I'm not vain (the link to page three on Unguns is messed up on page two).

I have now counted two postings in relation to Dr. Holloway's mouth from you Rick.

Here is your own mouth and scarf dedication.

With that scarf ninXeno426, it was a little easy to forecast we would cover it.

Dr. Holloway's mouth, you knew we would get to that.

First off, wtf with this Holloway mouth deviation. Disgusting and entertaining at the same time. Still I ask....Why?

Second, the OP has made a fair point. Holloway is hated, but perfect for his role in the larger plot. I often ask myself why people get caught up on the dislikability factor of the characters. The Prometheus naysayers love to harp on this aspect of the characters. This thread has been much needed.

Long story short, Green played this role perfectly, and the role was essential to Prometheus. Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees it.

Now seriously, yes his mouth generally takes on a pout. It's hilarious this has gained so much attention. That said, who could pout their way to douchery as well as this?

Cheers to Holloway and his incinerated pout.

I had no issues with the acting. He did a great job portraying a totally unlikeable a$$hole. I hate the character- not the actor.

I had no problem with him, I think he was well cast and did a fine job portraying shallow arrogance. I know a lot of people like Holloway, he did nail it. And he was styled well, mr. natural fiber reckless adventurer sel mythologizing World beat Ethno scientist I'm gonna meet the makers of humankind hipster. No one was supposed to sympathize with him.

He had a couple of great moments in the movie; when he said 'it's Christmas and I want to open my presents' gave me a chill, like wow, a trillion miles from nowhere and they're at the mercy of this a**hole. Then, his exchange with David while they're suiting up, much more tension, a great scene with David's 'not too close I hope' line. My only complaint is he didn't die horribly enough.

The removing the helmet thing is up for debate. The fancy AI said it was ok to do so (his commercial does state he can do things others would find to be unethical. Come on, all these jokers were lab rats, right?) so why not? It was meant to cause tension, not outrage the protocol purists lol. IT'S NOT HARD SCIENCE. But I digress. That was exactly the sort of thing he would do.

Great post Ingeniero!

David: 'go ahead Dr. Holloway, take off your helmet'. Let's see what happens. It's important to remember that the whole mission was at the behest of an ancient, hyper-rich nutjob to whom even Kings and Queens probably wouldn't say 'No'.

"The removing the helmet thing is up for debate. The fancy AI said it was ok to do so"

Indeed but also Ford had said the Atmosphere was cleaner than Earths, i think had they added a few more pieces of dialog and a piece of equipment they could have made it sound more realistic but then Holloway was a risk taker.

i think those who ripped this Scene apart will have a field day with the potential flaws that AC looks likely to drop on us.

Accepted ninXeno426.

Yes, BigDave. I believe there is a scientific reason why Dr. Holloway took off his helmet. David 8 was reluctant (appearance of) to agree with Dr. Holloway and admit the air was clean from particulate.

The reason they knew was from the feedback of the Spectagraph (airborne particulate readings down to 500 nanometers) to their helmet display and the pyramid scan in the Prometheus cockpit.

Nothing in the pyramid had been activated at the moment this below scan was taken.

I believe this is the reason that the Covenant crew is shown walking off the drop ship with just caps on. Local scanning most likely gave a thumbs up on air quality. Once you disturb this dormant environment (like stepping on spore pods or when the murals change) it can become challenging to the hipster explorer.

I believe Dr. Holloway took off his helmet because he had already been correct on so many things to that point and everything he predicted would most surely turn out exactly as he planned (arrogance).

Indeed and this is one of the BIGGEST Problems with Prometheus.

It was flawed, made no sense to many....

Yet the Drafts had explanation for all the parts (well a lot of) that people had problems with, sadly these was written out of the Shooting Script.

The other thing was the Weyland Viral Site held many many clues and answers just as you pointed out.... (has some flaws too like the Discover Worlds part).

But they cant expect every fan to invest into having to study the Viral Websites to try and make sense of a movie..  and the more you study the other movies then things make a bit more sense.

And if you read both Drafts and Star Beast you can paint a picture and if you look into the Greek, and Biblical connections loosely then we can paint a bigger picture.

But all of these are to much to expect the common viewer to take up and invest time in and so all they had was the "What you see is what you get" take from Prometheus.

Prometheus is a movie that the more you watch it and study it the more it grows on you and the more it gives answers.

What was shown in Prometheus, to me, was a snapshot of the story "in the midst of things" opposed to the birth of all the concepts explained. I too believe that Alien: Covenant will bring a candle into the room in regards to the things that were missing in Prometheus.
