How could Daniels catch alien with the claw?

Every time I watch alien covenent....one thing sticks out so much....

How in the he'll could the alien not avoid the enormous claw?

It dodged bullets on the ship right before hand. But hey, a slow moving, gigantic metal claw- nope, to much for it.  

I believe this is semi-retarded.
