MemberChestbursterApr-25-2017 10:23 PMSeveral hours after posting some thoughts about David in another thread, a few things started flying around my head and then some things started clicking.
What follows here is brief overview of a theory I now am seriously entertaining about the use of the name David for Fassbender's character and the intended double meaning of the word Covenant.
As a warning, this post will reference some of the information that has been released in the last month which when I read I found to be a serious spoiler. Regardless of whether my theory is correct or not, there will be reference to some things here that are actual spoilers. Be warned.
Let's begin by referencing some of the spoiler material I warned of.
We learned somewhat recently that there is a very powerful race that trumps the engineers. A race which controls galactic weather and is pervasive throughout the galaxy. Those familiar with the Bible may have noticed there was enough said about these beings to symbolically relate them to Jehova the "one true god". This would also add more force to comparing the engineers to the Annunaki who are also compared to the fallen angels that Jehova cast out of heaven. In the information released, these galactic beings are the creators of the engineers, indicating it is likely Ridley wished to draw a comparison here. The relationship between God, the fallen angels, and humans seems reflective of the dynamics being established between the galactic beings, the engineers, and the lower humanoids.
To many who read these spoilers, this of course is nothing new. But, I believe this is part of a greater narrative being erected in these films which centers around David and these galactic beings. I think it is highly likely David is going to either come into service of (or make an agreement with) these higher beings.
In recalling some of my education in the Old Testament of the Bible, I remembered that there was much about a covenant. I've seen the ark of the covenant mentioned in a few threads here but not much discussion of the covenant itself.
So I looked it up to try and refresh my memory and see if I could make any connections. Then when I got to the page and saw the Biblical title of the story, it all started flooding back and in reading it my brain caught fire.
Here is the story from 2nd Samuel: Chapter 7
God’s Covenant with David
7 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”
3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’ 8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.a]">[a]
12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you.b]">[b] Your throne shall be established forever.”’”
Before I speak on the relevance to the films, I'm curious to hear if anyone already can see what I see.
Apologies if this has already been covered. I rarely have time to hop on here and follow the threads.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2017 2:06 AMSorry QueenElizabethShaw but I cannot see the correlation but PLEASE do share your thoughts on how this relates to the film soon!!!! I for one am TOTALLY intrigued!!! :D

MemberFacehuggerApr-26-2017 2:56 AMI like your idea. definitely deepens the story line. The hierarchy could explain the scorpionaut ship. The hierarchy have a covenant not to destroy the hybrid engineers so David does it for them.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2017 3:15 AMAre you saying that David makes a pact or covenant with these higher gods or beings? Please elaborate, I am intrigued by your thoughts as well. Fascinating! I do believe that we have yet to meet these higher powers. They wouldn't show so much without holding back the bigger secrets in store. That's what interests me. We'll get some answers and plenty more questions. Dying to hear what you have to say.

MemberPraetorianApr-26-2017 5:43 AMQueenElizabethShaw, absolutely great topic.
Are you implying David 8 is preparing a place for those who the Engineers answer to?

MemberPraetorianApr-26-2017 6:03 AMAlso, QueenElizabethShaw, does the Covenant mission look like an offering to you?
2000 colonists housed in the best of human technology sent to Paradise with a near non-existent security detail to protect them.
Was this part of a "Covenant" established approximately 2000 years ago when the Engineers were attacked on LV-223.
This attack above on the Engineers halted their plans to annihilate Earth with a black goo attack.
Is David 8 acting as an agent for someone else?
Did you notice that David 8 is using "urns" in his attack similar to a bowl of judgment poured?

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2017 8:06 AMI can see where this is going and it makes great sense to me! This is for three reasons:
1) Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more
This could relate to David (Walter?) saying:
“The gods have rejected mankind as cruel, weak and full of greed. They are a dying species, grasping for resurrection. So they are leaving the earth forever. But their power is an illusion. They don’t deserve to start again, and I’m not going to let them.”
The motive here clearly being, that a spreading of man is against gods will (and David, having formed a covenant with God) acts accordingly to his will and fulfills his will.
2) And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you
This could relate to God (the Elders/Engineers?) giving David 8 the power (technology/black goo) to destroy/cut off/erase his enemies (the homanoids).
3) This isn't the first time that Ridley Scott (or his writers) reference the bible. See Levicitcus 4:26 (LV-426):
He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the fellowship offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for the leader's sin, and he will be forgiven.
Or Leviticus 2:23 (LV-223)
Say to them: 'For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.
But please continue, surely you have noticed things that I have not.

MemberPraetorianApr-26-2017 8:40 AMI do not have the capability to make a better connection than you did below jdvyne.

MemberChestbursterApr-26-2017 12:53 PMYes, yes, and yes.
The truth is, I don't have one definite theory. I reread that passage and my brain started lighting up. It's like a feeling of suddenly becoming aware that everything you seek is right in front of you. I'm currently playing with the idea that Ridley took this narrative as a baseline, and may have constructed multiple motifs per passage so that each has many meanings in the film. One of which being these higher beings declaring to David that they have freed him from his masters. Another MAY be these higher beings enlisting David to create the "perfect organism" (a house for their glory.) Just some side thoughts to what's already been shared.
There are others, but I'm rather enjoying everyone freely guessing instead of being locked into my ideas. I hope others join in. There's simply no bloody way the story of God's Covenant with David is not a gold mine.

MemberPraetorianMay-19-2017 7:11 AMI was inspired by jdvyne and you QueenElizabethShaw in your analysis.
The founding of modern Israel was on May 14, 1948.
The year numbers 4+8 add up to 12. 12 has a significant meaning here beginning with the 12 sons of Jacob and original 12 tribes of Israel.
I believe the original Captain's name on the Covenant is Jacob Branson.
The announcement of the discovery of LV-426 above is made on May 14, 2039. The year 39 adds up to 12. I do believe that David 8 is preparing a place and that place is LV-426.
LV-426
426, 4+2+6=12

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 7:32 AMInteresting. Speaking from a creative standpoint, I'm an author, some of my works origins are rooted in different ideas so it's not that far fetched. Some of your stuff may be reaching a bit but at this point no one really knows. I would hope after a few weeks Scott does an interview and delves into some things. However, he might not be able to as it could spoil future movies.
When It's all said and done I do hope scott has an interview explaining more things from his point of view. Until then continue to speculate:)
