Alien Covenant has killed the franchise....really?

MemberPraetorianNov-25-2017 4:28 AMThis is something that has been bothering me for a while now.A popular opinion Regarding Alien Covenant is that it has ruined the Alien franchise...since when?Alien hasn't exactly been in the best shape since Alien 3!Now I'm an admirer of all films(except the AVP's,they rightfully suck)but don't really understand how anyone can say this about Covenant.Alien 3,Alien Resurrection,AVP and AVP Reqieum, and Prometheus have been dividing the Alien fan base for quite some time now.Even Aliens has divided some fans over the year.I also can't forget terrible video games like Aliens Colonial Marines. So what makes Covenant so guilty that some dub it the death of the franchise?

MemberChestbursterNov-25-2017 5:40 AMIt did not ruin the franchise but it might as well signal the end of commercial viability for now.

MemberXenomorphNov-25-2017 6:05 AMNo...If Alien3 didn't kill this franchise then nothing will.
A L I E N killed the franchise really....creature died at the end....Ripley gets rescued(?) and back to a desk job. The END. I didn't walk out of the theater thinking: Can't wait to see the sequel!!
Aliens also killed it.......Queen dead...LV426 NUKED! Ripley and Hicks get hitched, adopt Newt...Series over.
Alien3.....Creature really dead(burned up...no more babies/dna..no more egg/facehugger...Michael Bishop knows this..) Ripley/Hicks/Newt dead.....THE END.
Prometheus gave us/me much hope.
Alien:Covenant: I really don't have a clue what David or the Engineers will do!? I want to see what happens next! Even more than Prometheus! This has never happened in the franchise ...a cliffhangar.

MemberPraetorianNov-25-2017 9:17 AMIt hasn't killed, of course. This franchise can't be killed.
It's a strange opinion but I do think that AC had to be made. It will cause the rebirth of the AU.

MemberTrilobiteNov-25-2017 7:39 PMIt cannot be killed but I think there needs to be some closure tying it to the original movie before branching out anymore.

MemberNeomorphNov-28-2017 8:58 AMI wouldn't go as far to say it has killed it but it definitely hasn't done it any favours. its closed the doors opened by Prometheus and the director isn't going to help if he focuses solely on David. we will always have the original masterpiece and the excellent sequel so the franchise will always live on. I live in the hope that someone comes along and does something in a similar manner to what their thinking of doing with Blomkamp's film, and give us an alternative sequel to Prometheus. god I hate AC so much. sorry

Indeed ali81 this was maybe Alien Covenants main Problem... it was trying to please all fans, but by doing so it have so little to please them, that it ultimately disappointed most of every type of Fan.
The 2nd Problem was the Marketing and Hype, it was bigged up as a ALIEN movie and a real HORROR flick, when it was just a Gore Fest to a degree, but not as Gory as it could have been. When RS and the Marketing pushed this movie a lot of Fans expected it would be about the XENOMORPH and it would Scare the !"£$%$ out of people, and RS had been saying about bringing the ALIEN Vibe back and Waterton talking about Ripley and Action...
These all lead Fans to think they was in for a Action Packed Xenomorph Flick, and that Poster of Engineers vs Xenomorphs did not help ONE bit.
Alien Covenant: did not answer or seem to begin to answer in as good detail the events of the Space Jockey, but some fans need understand we have not reached this yet.
Alien Covenant: did not give ALIENS fans and some Fanboys enough Action.
Alien Covenant: did not do justice for ALIEN fans in replicating the Haunted House of Alien.
Alien Covenant: did not utilize or answer anything PROMETHEUS fans was expecting not in a ideal way and Dr Shaw and the Engineers where brushed under the carpet.
Alien Covenant: changed what we thought about the Xenomorph Origins, giving us a Curve-ball that a Rogue Android, with Daddy Issues and Human Issues went mad and decided to play Dr Frankenstien which has not settle down well with many.
On top of these issues, the movie just had so many other flaws, that also dogged Prometheus.

MemberDeaconNov-28-2017 4:32 PMI think it has taken all the Hard Work Prometheus was attempting and brushed it all under the Carpet, i think it took all the History of the Franchise and re-hashed this to be purely about DAVID and his Arc and Agenda.
I am up for a bit of this... but not to the detrimental effect on other elements it has had

MemberNeomorphNov-29-2017 6:35 AMbigdave, that poster sums AC up to a tee. the graphic portrayal of engineers, xenos and facehuggers suggested one thing and in reality, it had nothing to do with the movie. complete false advertising and yet another let down imo.

MemberNeomorphDec-03-2017 3:39 AMMaybe it has not killed it but it hasn't made it better. To me it seems that there are people that have strong opinions about the prequel movies which leads to exaggerated claims both from those that like them and those that don't.
Alien 3 was that last Alien movie that I really liked. The movies that have been released after that have been average at best.
"… but don't really understand how anyone can say this about Covenant.Alien 3,Alien Resurrection,AVP..."
Lack of good characters, dialogue, and ideas might be parts of the answer at least. The franchise has been around for a long time so logically now the more movies that are done the less the chances are that all movies will be good. I like Alien 3 so my claim about that is about the other movies in the quote.
The fact that there is a division between the fans of the alien franchise is a good thing. There was a podcast made by AVP-galaxy where they were worried about that but I think that it is a healthy thing. If every fan of a franchise agree about what is the best thing then it is not a group that invites to discussions but rather a church where everyone is supposed to have the same opinion.
The prequels didn't ruin Star Wars and I guess that it is the same here.
You mention video games, I don't care for those. Maybe there are people that buy almost everything that have the alien connection to it but I don't. There is a difference between having an interest in something and to be a mindless consumer. It seems to me that if you buy everything just because it has an alien connection to it, a Star Wars connection or whatever then to me it is a behavior of someone that has been told to buy everything of a certain brand, to me that is not healthy. No I have never bought an alien comic while we are at it and I have no interest to do so either.
My reason for why I feel a bit sour about AC is that Prometheus was not that good so I hoped that they would have learned something from the criticism of Prometheus when they did AC but they did not. The characters were still not well written which is also my main problem with Prometheus. When there is almost the same problems two movies after each-other it really makes me wonder.
"No...If Alien3 didn't kill this franchise then nothing will."
I might be a bit biased here but AR and AVP are the movies that did more damage to the franchise than Alien 3, but that is my opinion. I still have not watched AVPR and I have no intention to do so either.
