Despicable Me is full of subtle and not-too-subtle Alien references

I think Guillermo del Toro is too gothic to make a good Alien film.
To the OT- I don't think it is who but it is instead what.
The Alien franchise started out as sheer sci fi terror/horror and became more action heavy basically. With the exception of Alien 3, it never quite captured the gritty terror of Alien (and I love the entire Quadrilogy).
I have noticed that the Resident Evil game franchise had a similar evolution and became a convoluted action game.....until it got back to its gritty roots with RE7 and scared the Sh"t out of gamers again.
If another movie comes out, regardless of the path, it needs to scare on a visceral level. Anything else seems a waste of time imo.
Lone Thanks- I forgot how great MAD magazine was/is!!!
ninXeno426 I was going to ask what the Xeno under water was about...........but Nevermind.
This might appeal to fans whom are into the biblical angles of the franchise (bonus: cameo from Pac Man ghosts):

Cool! I’ve had “Blade Runner 2049” on my watch list for some time now, but I want to see the original “Blade Runner” again first before I watch the sequel because I don’t remember it very well. The thing is, as I understand there are like three or four different versions of “Blade Runner” and I’m not really sure which one to look out for or which is the best (I guess that is subjective though).
By the way, at the time when I wrote this thread, I hadn’t seen “Arrival” yet… I literally have been wanting to see it ever since it came out like three years ago but well… Life and a million inconveniences got in the way, but I finally saw it a couple of days ago and man oh man… What a wonderful movie. It now stands alongside “Contact” for me as the best serious alien contact movie of all time (I say serious because I also enjoy big noisy and fun alien invasion movies like “Independence Day” or “War of the Worlds”).
So yeah, this guy is crazy talented and I’m pretty sure he would do a great “Alien” movie if given the chance.
Modern Medicine
Oh cool mate… so, who do you think should do the music for a new “Alien” film?
Lone
Well, I do see your point, and that’s true to an extent, but I do think it matters who the director is… A lot of times whether the studio meddles to much with a project or not I think is has a lot to do with the director in charge of said project; I assume if a director is very respected, has a strong will and a very well defined vision for the movie, it would be a whole lot more difficult for the studio to mess with the project than it would be dealing with an inexperienced director who has maybe a lot of insecurities and doubts and has to prove himself to the world.

You know, Luke Scott is a really an interesting choice, in great part because he is Ridley Scott´s son. That reminded me that just right now, Jason Reitman is directing a new “Ghostbusters” movie, which was the seminal work of his father Ivan Reitman.
Regarding “Morgan”, I saw it, and I think it showed Luke has potential, but as a whole I didn’t quite like it. To me it´s one of those sci-fi movies which has a really interesting premise and set up, only to find itself at a loss later on regarding what to do with that premise.
I feel like that happens a lot with sci-fi movies, I’ve seen quite a few films with really interesting premises that halfway through it’s as if the writers didn’t know where the hell to take the story and the movie just falls apart before reaching the finish line… Some movies that I’ve felt suffered from that same problem where "Limitless", "In Time", "Repo Men" (2010), "Self/less" and "Chappie"; they all had interesting set ups and premises that the movie didn’t quite know how to handle past the midpoint. “Morgan” to me fits squarely with that group of movies.
Still, it doesn’t mean Luke doesn’t have some great movies in his future, I hope he continues to work and that he can have a career as successful as the one his father has had.
About Paul Verhoeven and Peter Hyams… They’re really great and interesting choices (specially Verhoeven.,. I would LOVE to see an “Alien” movie directed by him, if anything it would be crazy as all hell and it won’t be boring AT ALL lol) but I think they’re way too old now, Verhoeven is 81 and Hyams is 76… Although Ridley Scott is 82 and he´s still kicking and screaming so you never know I guess.
And about David Fincher, yeah I thought about him also but given his story with “Alien 3” I’m absolutely certain he would NEVER get involved in an “Alien” related project again so I didn’t mention him for that reason.
NTFS
Yeah, you could say Guillermo del Toro and Ridley Scott share some things in common. Again, I think that Del Toro would do a great and terrifying “Alien” movie if given the chance.
BigDave
Hey Peter Jackson is a really interesting choice, I haven’t thought of him… Maybe because I relate him way more with the fantasy genre than with sci fi but it’s still a really interesting choice.
I couple of people I would add to my list would be Alfonso Cuarón, who made the awesome sci-fi movies “Children of Men” and “Gravity”, and David Robert Mitchell, the director of “It Follows”.
Here's one of my absolute favorite homages to Alien. Cowboy Bepop Session 11 "Toys in the Attic". Awesome nods to Alien, Aliens, and 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Regarding Alien Awakening.
If we assume this will be the Title, then it will Mislead Fans as they would expect we will see a Awakening of the Xenomorph, well at least they wont expect it to be a Awakening of AI.
So i see this as NOTHING New as far as News... i think it is a Waiting Game for something more Official.
The Disappointment with Alien Covenant were having Xenomorphs back did-not help, they have to take on Board what went WRONG!
At the Moment having the Covenant Ship and its Convenient Thousands of Colonist/Embryo's in Full Control of David and what seems his Agenda to Unleash his Creation (Xenomorph) to Rule the Galaxy, that will END up after the Conclusion of the Prequels as showing WHEN/HOW those Eggs get on Board the Derelict.
And quite a lot of Fans are not pleased that David is Indicated as Creator of the Iconic Beast, that the Prequels are Focused on David, and also Ridley Scotts ideas/interests in exploring Creationism and AI.
So it would be interesting IF/WHEN a Prequel Continuation is given the GO AHEAD and how much of the Ideas back in April-June 2017 will be changed/given the Thumbs up by Disney.
"Frodo and Sam on a Journey to discover the derelict"
Nah i was thinking more of the Space Jockey Race ;)

This was Peter Jacksons First Movie, and he played a Star Role in it too, if you have not seen it, then its worth checking out..... its not a Serious Movie... more a Alien Splatter Comedy Fest.. but Entertaining None the Less ;)
It even has a Connection to maybe the Derelict Incident, and look out for a similar scene to the Deacon Birth ;)

At the Moment the ONLY way that maybe this News could be True would maybe be IF the work was Green Lit just before of after ALIEN Day, as Alien Day would have been a Ideal Marketing Opportunity.
As i have said before, if this is TRUE.... then i think by the Time Ridley Scott has even began Work, or Finished Work on Raised by Wolves, you should hear Ridley Scott Tease more about any ALIEN Project he is working on.
I still suspect this could be related to the Work they Began on/got as Far as around the Time of Alien Covenant's Release that the World Box Office and Take Over Talks had put on ICE!
I think as daliens had mentioned....
IF there was News, then Alien Day would have been a ideal time to Tease or at least Mention it, even if Disney just came clear and said we are in the Works on a ALIEN Movie.
This would Bump Up some interest, but then if its not clear then it would get FANS going Wild thinking we may be getting another ALIEN Movie and not another Prequel, but then such a Announcement would have allowed Disney to Gauge the Reaction which would help them to see if their is a Interest in a Alien Covenant Sequel, or if Fans want a Alien/Aliens Sequel.
Alien Day is Alien Day.... but a thing to remember is Alien Covenant is a ALIEN Prequel hence a Alien Movie. But its a interesting remake to make Leto, because indeed it does show that it will be EXPECTED that a Alien Prequel should be a ALIEN Movie and not a David/Android Movie.
This is something that Disney have to take a LOOK at... they are NOT in the Business of taking Risks, they want to make Money $$$ and so if they Feel the more DAVID a Movie is the Less Fans may be Interested, then it really would a EFFECT the chances of us seeing a Ridley Scott inspired Continuation/Conclusion.
So there is a Predicament regarding the Prequels and HOW you carry on, because ULTIMATELY it will be Expected to Conclude with the Eggs on the Derelict.
Its the Route and Answers to this, that would be something that Fans would NOT completely agree on.
WHY in the other Topic i Started the other Week, i proposed that maybe the NEXT Movie should be a more ALIEN Movie that is NOT a Direct Continuation of David's Journey or Ripleys (includes Amanda).
Before doing such a Move they (Disney) would have to Decide the Origins of the Xenomorph, is it via David's Experiments even if he is NOT the Final Part of the Jigsaw, or had the Xenomorph been created Thousands of Years prior (unless some Tear in Space can account for a Derelict being sent back in time).
Because Depending on when the Xenomorph came into Existence, could affect the Avenues to Explore the Xenomorph. By that a David Creator could limit LV-223, LV-426, Planet 4 and Origae-6 as the Avenues to introduce the Xenomorph again in a NONE Direct Alien Movie as far as does-not continue from David or Ripley.
Then again.. maybe NOT so... if Engineers come to take David's Creation or Evolve it and then take it... and they LOAD up Multiple Ships.... then the Derelict would be just ONE of the Ships..
So you could then have another Ship that either Successfully Deployed its Cargo to another WORLD the Engineers wanted to Rid of Life, or maybe another Accident and Crash Ship and Cargo takes Place?
Like i said any Movie they TRY and DO that avoids being a Prequel, they either have to KNOW how they intend the Origins of those Eggs to be so as to NOT step on the Toes of any Prequel, or Conflict them... or simply DONT bring up anything about the Origins.
Well, i have to confess. I AM a big Fan of 'Alien 3' and i love David Fincher filmography.
Ah ah ah @BigDave. Frodo and Sam on a Journey to discover the derelict, exploring the mountains and valleys of the planet Lv-426.
Ps: i love Peter Jackson filmography and my choices are the worse.
"David has not got a taste of Creation"
I mean NOW lol Typo! and i cant Edit my post
"I strongly hope that the scriptwriter will turn David's role from the current antagonist to a protagonist one."
In some way, maybe......
David has not got a taste of Creation, he has seen the Failures of Mankind and the Engineers, maybe he sees beyond them as a Failed Species, but looks at them as a Failed Creators/Leaders.
So maybe David now has a God Complex, but from Prometheus and the Crossing and some parts of Alien Covenant we get the Picture that David has been affected by how he was treated.. what he said (as Walter) to Daniels may be something to consider... "if we are KIND it will be KIND world" he seemed to drawn to Dr Shaw a lot because she was KIND, as he said she showed him more Compassion than he ever had from Mr Weyland or any Human. When we look at the Trailer Song Nature Boy we could see this FIT with David from Prometheus and the Crossing. The Closing Lyrics...
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn, Is just to love and be loved in return"
I know some may look at David as a being with No Compassion or Love and a Good Point would be WHY would he had Killed Dr Shaw or Tried to Rape her... this is Ambiguous but its likely he had more than PLATONIC Love for her, which was not Reciprocated and lets say he NEVER took Rejection Well.. So he is Unstable thats for Sure.
David seemed to have a Wonder for his Child (Orams Chest Buster) he was upset and seemed to have Compassion for the Neomorph that Oram had KILLED... did this Influence our David to decide that Orams lack of Understanding or Compassion warrants the FATE that David had led him to?
David appeared to have a dislike for Mankind and the Engineers, in part because he sees the Wickedness in their Ways and Flaws, and how they treat their Creations. There could be a lot of Depth behind his Actions... but maybe its just me Interpreting things Wrong?
So we can ASSUME that David will have ONE Agenda, that is MASS Produce his Xenomorphs using the Colonist and then maybe aim to use a Engineer Ship to deploy them (Faster) but if this was his Intention, then going to LV-223 and using another Juggernaught to Bombard Earth would be the BEST way about this and then from the Ashes.. continue to Create just as he did with Planet 4.
Ridley Scott claimed the NEXT Movie would be about AI, and "what kind of a World" it is that David would Create/Build and NOT about Xenomorphs.
So IF he is KIND then maybe it would be a Kind World... its those comments and the things i bring up in this Topic that lead me to come up with ideas for a Alien Covenant Sequel which i was to call Alien Ascension, which was kind of my Interpretation of what RS may do NEXT...
Months after i debated this... we had RS announce the Raised by Wolves TV Series, which some Elements of this are Pretty Much what my Alien Ascention covered, which was my Interpretation of what Ridley Scott could have meant by his comments.
So by that we could maybe WONDER... if David was to Create/Evolve his own Humanoids (Human Embryos) would he be a KIND Creator/God and Teach his Creation Well and about Certain things...
But then what Happens when Humans Turn Up, that then Reveal that David is a Creation Himself and what he has been Teaching his Creations about his Origins, and his Creations Origins is a LIE... what happens then?
Rebellion, Rejection? We know how David deals with that... but then is this NOT how Gods Deal with it too?
So i think we could potentially give David a New ARC, have him as Kind and Compassionate with his New Creation, until it becomes Corrupt and the he has NO Choice in his Next Action.
And we can then see him Upset with Tears in his Eyes because of what he has been Forced to do. (like in the Bombardment Scene in AC).
But some could see those Tears as Crocodile Tears and that David is just a Mad as a Box of Frogs, Genocidal Maniac
I think its going to be HARD to revisit David and Please every Fan and i think quite are lot are NOT so interested in him, even if we TRY and change his Character.
We are NOW doing a ALIEN Franchise Prequels, and it will be Expected to be about and Conclude with the ALIEN.
My post was a bit of a joke... but i do like Peter Jackson, i think some of the EPIC Movies with Large Sets, Visuals he has done very well.
I think as i said before it really depends on what the STORY is First, then its a case of which Directors would suit the PLOT/TYPE of Alien Movie that would be Produced.
I think BUDGET is another Factor, some Directors can work well with a Tight Budget, some are used to LARGE Budgets and so the Scope/Plot and Budget all have to be taken into Account when trying to figure out WHO would be the right man for the Job.
some Interesting Candidates Mentioned However (in this thread).
Ridley Scott, H.R.Giger, Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerrit in 23-minute interview on Alien (1979)
I don't think so. Alien Day is Alien Day.
I think if they had something in plan, not in the works already, they would have made the announcement on Alien Day.
Apparently the author of the article in Variety, Susan King, is not really up to date about the future of the franchise. Not sure if she watched the films, for her "the baby alien lifeform bursts from Kane’s stomach". That's why everybody calls it "chestburster", right, Susan?
So I don't think she knows something we don't know.
If the studio decides to extend the story of Alien Covenant, Michael Fassbender will have to play David again not only once but twice.

I strongly hope that the scriptwriter will turn David's role from the current antagonist to a protagonist one.
Most viewers consider David as a negative figure at this moment. The scriptwriter should put a spin on his character.
David may carry out several experiments with plants, animals or embryos during long journey to Origae-6. He should not harm any humans.
When the ship arrives he will wake up a the pioneer group and the main crew (20-30 people only) according to protocol. This pioneer group will do the preparations on the surface for landing the main ship on the planet.
He may be accused by Daniels but David will point out how he had saved her life, more than once.
We can expect an ugly confrontation between the humans and the engineers in Alien Awakening. The humans will be badly defeated at the end.
David tries to protect the humans unsuccessfully and he will punish the engineers for their deeds by infecting them with the result of his experiments.
David may be the sole survivor on Origae-6 and will continue to create life that transforms the flora and fauna of the planet.
At the end of the film the badly damaged Covenant either on orbit or crash-landed on the planet still has nearly 2000 colonists in stasis.
The Weyland corporation asks the support of another company to save the stranded colonists.

When I first saw the Sacrificial Engineer in Prometheus, I thought about Lord of the Rings. So, yeah, Peter Jackson - can make a good epic Prometheus-like story.
I have not READ most of the Expanded Novels which includes Alien: The Cold Forge
Looking at the Movies Alone, then indeed there seems a Related Parasitical Element as we can see with the Neomorph Spores they release those Tiny Particles of the Parasitic Element. When David examines the Ampoule we can see Tiny Particles.
The Franchise and Expanded Comics/Games etc seem to imply a Franchise Implants a Embryo... However in ALIEN the X-Ray we dont see this, they notice a like Shadow/Mist/Cloud and so this does add up to say similar to what we see with the Neomorph Spores, only its like the Facehugger replaces the Spore and Injects the Motes/Parasitic Particles/Pathogen.
So yeah we could Speculate that these then Combine/Clump up together and start to Fuse/Multiply while taking DNA/Traits from the Host to then Construct a Hybrid Organism that becomes the Embryo/Chest Buster etc.
Sadly i am not sure we would see a Return of David... maybe only as ....

A lot of Fans are not pleased about his Character... some Felt.
*He should not be the Focus of the Prequels and too much Screen Time is Devoted to him.
*He was responsible for KILLING our Engineers and Dr Shaw, but the Engineers could still Return.
*His Character Arc was not to everyone's taste and he seemed to be a Genocidal Megalomaniac
*He Created the Xenomorph to the Disbelieve and Dismay of most.
However... you could still CHANGE his Character a bit, maybe we have to Remember "if we are KIND it will be a KIND world"
But if we only go by Alien Covenant and the Advent then it would just Paint a Picture of David only wanting to get to LV-223 and use the Place as a Test Facility to Turn those Colonist into Thousands of Eggs... until incoming Humans and Engineers Turn up!
I personally would NOT mind seeing him again, and i would not mind if the Next Time we dont get much about the Xenomorph, but this could be a Distraction as it will be expected to GET to the Xenomorph and Derelict and i cant see most Fans interested in SITTING through say 70% of a David movie or a WHOLE Movie before we get to the Xenomorphy Part.
Maybe Peter Jackson?

I think some would be interesting in more to the Engineers than just that, i think having it be about just Mankind and the Xenomorph would be limiting what Potential Prometheus had opened up... But i understand that some would not be interested in such a Expansion.
So in Context to ALIEN Franchise... yes Humans, Xenomorphs and Engineers, but i think you could have a expanded Franchise which has NO real Limits.
So you could expand it in many ways... we cant assume the Layers of the Creation Cake are.

And so we could have Layers Above, Below, Parallel Layers and then in some of these we could introduce something SINISTER.
Who Created the Engineers, who Taught them all their Knowledge and for what Purpose and where those beings Benevolent?
