I Raptus 8 LOL! That is correct. If anything, it made time wasting appear productive. Look how busy we were frantically crunching data from deep space and...and...doing important work!

It certainly sounds interesting; however, I think some elements might change the viewing experience of the Quadrilogy. With Alien for example, it would be strange watching it knowing Ellen was actually gumming up the works of WY who was only trying to save humanity.

dkAlien: Covenant ForumIs Amanda Ripley the future?

The good thing about Amanda is that we can identify with her (especially if you played Isolation- because you WERE her) and had some skin in the game. A series would really have to stick with the character Creative Assembly developed.

As far as Burke is concerned, Amanda was in her late 60s when she died? Burke could have been telling the truth since Amanda would have a lot of decades to live post Isolation.

Amanda apparently married, adopted a different last name, had no offspring and died of cancer. Hmmm.............No offspring and died of "cancer"- yes, there could be a few interesting ways to flesh that out.

Interesting theory! It would be an elaborate twist, turning the whole franchise on its head.

I've always hated the angle that Weyland-Yutani is nothing more than a greedy Weapons Division company. It's too shallow.

I prefer to think they are frantically trying to study the xenomorph to better understand how to combat the species.... and whoever the hell unleashed them in our galactic neck of the woods.

They will do whatever is necessary to protect the greater good. Crew Expendable.

Unfortunately I think David is a lost cause; too hell-bent on his vendetta against his any life with a soul. Maybe an anti-xenomorph agent was originally his directive, a directive that became corrupted during the Neutrino Blast?

But, Peter Weyland +his company, as well as the Engineers could well be doing as you suggest.

I like it

I.RaptusAlien: Covenant ForumIs Amanda Ripley the future?

Thoughts_Dreams excellent points! There is most definitely more to this franchise than just Ripley(s) battling the xeno's and The Company.

I have a theory about why we don't like most of the Prometheus and Covenant cast, but DO like the Alien characters (that were also quite one-dimensional)...and it's not nostalgia or 'rose-tinted glasses'. I'll make a thread about it when I get a chance.

I just feel the franchise as a whole lacks direction and unity.

Prometheus attempted to open up new directions and new possibilities, whilst introducing us to a protagonist in Shaw; a character that contrasted well against Ellen Ripley. They are almost polar opposites in personality except for their indomitable resilience and strength.

IMO the biggest mistake they made with Covenant was replacing Shaw with a less vocal/emotional Daniels, and then fore-shadowed her potential demise at start of 'Awakening' as well. Does that mean we will get a third lead character in as many films?

Prometheus was Shaw's crucible, she went through hell in that film. Her entire world was turned upside down and perverted by David.

Daniel's transformation was not as convincing I felt.

Rallying behind Amanda Ripley gives us and the franchise the unity and consistency it needs in the interim. Until they establish some structure and direction to where the Alienverse is heading and who is leading it.

Amanda's character has an expendable timeline in that her fate has already established....unless of course Burke was lying to Ellen Ripley, which is entirely possible.

Whatever movie they decide to make will need to at least mention David.  I don't want the whole film about him though.  It could rely on the actions of the Engineers since that was what Scott wanted originally to focus on.  I'd prefer a movie that doesn't revolve around a psycho robot.  Ending the story arc on him would be a big mistake and stick a nail in the Alien universe.  I think Disney would like to avoid that.  They bought a universe that's worth exploring (and making revenue too).

"Actually I looked around the www for complaints about Prometheus. The major thing doesn’t seem to be about the lack of Xenos but rather about dumb characters that are doing stupid things (hello Milburn)" That is very true, but there were many initially that were disappointed that it didn't have enough "Alien dna" in the film. The Engineers are roughly just as mixed as the rest of the film,Some fans refuse to accept the space jockey and the Engineers are the same thing.I know there are plenty of theories that suggest they are not,Problem is Ridley says yes they are. The sad reality is that most fans wanted the xenomorph back.Like i said i think the announcement of Alien 5 took a lot of steam away from Prometheus 2,which lead to a compromise in vision. So we get a more streamlined Alien film instead of a straight Prometheus sequel. That's why Prometheus is divisive,It splits the fan base into two.One side just wanted Alien, the other Prometheus 2.Covenant attempted to please both, but failed to really please either. Most people i know hate Prometheus, and prefer Covenant.

Thoughts_Dreams I love Alien 3 as well lol.It took the assembly cut to make me love it though.I'm an unashamed fan of all 6 primary films. But the fact of the matter is Alien 3 was hated by most at the time of it's release, and many still do.Whether it's the sloppily assembled theatrical cut,or Hicks and Newt killed of screen,Even the death of Bishop and Ripley taking her own life has been controversial.A division with Alien truely starts with Alien 3.

ninXeno426Alien: Covenant ForumAlien Awakening,Alien 5,AVP 3,or Alien Isolation? What's best for the future of Alien on film?

Characters have never been Alien's strong suit.Even the best Characters with the exception of Ripley and David aren't really developed. But that shouldn't mean they are likeable.Whether they had colourful personalities (Think Parker and Hudson, and the Crew of the Betty)hero types(Hicks)Sympathetic(Clemens)Or perhaps just well written (Dillon)

The problem with the prequels is not that they are 2 hour films,it hasn't been a problem before. It's the fact that Ridley is more concerned with the over all scope and concepts than characters, not too dissimilar from Classic Sci fi authors like Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Also it comes from short sited screen writers who more often than not are just guns for hire,no real passion or understanding for the property.

ninXeno426Alien: Covenant ForumContinuity is a fickle b@#@ with a short attention span

It seems that way.Despite what some think,Ridley does like Aliens,he and James Cameron planned on making Alien 5 after all. They both walked from the project after Fox decided to pursue AVP,James cut all ties to Alien after that.Ironically James Cameron turned out to be a fan of AVP,ranking it third after Alien and Aliens.Ridley on the other hand has never seen AVP.

That being said,Ridley is certainly more concerned with fulfilling his vision than franchise continuity.A good example is who exactly is Michael Bishop Weyland from Alien 3 then?It seems Peter Weyland had no heirs with the exception of Meredith Vickers, and she didn't seem to have any children. It's safe to say at the very least Ridley isn't counting Alien 3.

The idea of the Engineers building a research facility on LV-223 to study eggs found on LV-426 seems plausible to me. It would explain a lot about the substance too. Having a tough time with the rest though.

Remake of the ZX Spectrum Game.... ALIENS... certainly was a Scary Game, due to the Controls, and how you can only control ONE Character a time and had to rush to switch to them quickly when they are in Peril....  and how the Xenomorph can just come out of the Blue... making it HARD so your up against it!

This i feel is what made Alien Isolation work... because the ODDS where Stacked Against you.... and its the same as WHY we have ALIEN and ALIEN 3 work better as Movies.

"I think but what is the most important thing is to have humans to see ourselves in, that we can related to"

UNFORTUNATELY... this holds true for a lot of Fans... and it is a True Statement... we have to feel for the Characters, the more we can connect to their Jeopardy the More effect the Action and Horror and Thriller has on the Audience..

Sadly this is something thats not always easy to accomplish, it got to the point with me in ALIEN 3 i was bored of Ripleys Character and so her Death did NOTHING but just had that Symbolism of Sacrifice...   If you cant CARE or CONNECT to any Characters then what happens to them, means nothing much!

How many people are on the Edge of their Seats with the Characters from AVPR when you know they are in Jeopardy, how many times your on the Edge of your Seat Willing them to escape and survive or accomplish their task?

I watched ARMAGEDDON the other Day, and this had the opposite effect, even though i have seen it 3 times before, you still get that URGE of concern for the Peril even though you know they survive....

So i agree its getting that Connection that makes the difference.... The PROBLEM! i mention is most people only relate to Human Characters if they are WELL-WRITTEN and Performed...   This is common for many people... but for some you can Connect with NON-HUMAN characters if they are done well, carry some kind of Humanity or you can get some Sympathy with.

Why Johnny Five was more Relatable than most the Cast of the Prequels... or even Alien Resurrection and AVP movies and he was a 100% Bonafide Robot lol

But in General.... yes you need Characters you can connect with, feel Empathy for... or else it just wont have any real effect.  Usually people can relate to Humans more, especially Humans who we can relate to more than other Humans... why maybe the Space Truckers work in ALIEN, the Oil Rig Drillers work in ARMAGEDDON if your seeing that... this could be ME or happen to someone i KNOW.. then it works better.

This poses a PROBLEM... which a Prometheus 2 would have faced... or indeed a Alien Covenant 2... you would need Human Characters to relate to who are well done... or Humanoid who are VERY well done to pull off..

So a Prometheus 2 about a David and Dr Shaw could work to a degree if BOTH Characters are worked well... but then you would always have to introduce other HUMANS to be on the Safe Side... and it was HOW do they do that?

David is a Robot.... Dr Shaw is a bit of a Wooden Human Character.... and they meet what EVIL SOB Engineers and then how do we get any Dialog?

Hence you could see the route they went with Alien Covenant, by having David end up closer to Earth so a group of Humans could turn up.. and be put in Peril!

Sadly Character Execution never worked... only Characters i was concerned about was David.... Oram, and i felt for Faris and Lope a LITTLE... the rest even Walter it did not concern me what happened to them.

Walter was annoying a bit like Dr Shaw...

Tennessee was well just a Milburn to me, and Daniels did-not connect to me even like Vickers did.

"... throwing Dr Shaw under the Bus and Engineers was a wasted Potential, just to please the Fanboys!"

Maybe so but it did not help since the problems with AC were bigger than that."

Certainly.... my point being that you would have expected those to be more of the Focus with David in a sequel... but it seemed to Focus on David too much, and the Xenomorph and Daniels....  I think David gets a lot of the Blame about it being about him a lot mainly due to the Failure for how the Xenomorph was not done enough justice and time, and Daniels Character... which if BOTH were done better would have not made David stand out as much.

With some of the dialog and actions of David... it leaves little space to have his Character Redeem himself so anyone can feel any Empathy for him.... but this does-not mean it cant be FIXED!  But a majority of his Agenda came across as though he ONLY cared for himself and his infatuation to Create, and Create a Destructive Force...

First I got to say that I am not a big gamer and second that I have never played an Alien game ever. We have been talking about if the beast is cooked because of various comics and what not. If the game is crappy then it will maybe cook the beast even more? To me I would rather take a game where it stalks in the background because there have been many games where you see the enemies, and (like Doom, Wolfenstein, and so on) but maybe (I am not sure so I say maybe) not as many where you are being stalked by a monster where you have seen it. Hide it in the shadows and it might be better as a scare effect.

Usually there are different parts involved in things like this so I don’t think that blaming one or two persons is the right thing to do. Remember that Lindelof got a lot of crap for Prometheus but I don’t think that he is totally to blame for that. It is like a hockey team, it is not just the fault of the coach if the team doesn’t go that far.

To put this into context I guess that both Fox and Ridley are to blame partially. They should also have gotten writers that could write characters, something that both movies have failed with. Not only is it about writing but they also have left scenes out that should have been in it (the Hammerpede scene being one of them).

“… following the gradual quality decline with the franchise starting with Alien 3.” - NinXeno426

Nah, I like Alien 3 so I don’t think that the movie is to blame. Alien Resurrection is not very good but don’t throw shit at Alien 3 (LOL). By the way, I prefer how they used the beast in Alien and Alien 3 even though Aliens is alright.

My problem with Prometheus was not that it wasn’t a copy of Alien. My problems was the characters and that there were holes in the story-telling (leaving things out that should have been explained better). The Engineers were interesting although maybe explained too little, and I also liked the aesthetics. David and Janek were well made characters too and to a less extent maybe Vickers who I disliked first but the more I think about it at least she is interesting but that doesn’t mean that I like her.

“Complaints aimed at the lack of the xenomorph are a common complaint.” - NinXeno426

Actually I looked around the www for complaints about Prometheus. The major thing doesn’t seem to be about the lack of Xenos but rather about dumb characters that are doing stupid things (hello Milburn).

“That's Ridley addressing Covenant as well as fans.Fans didn't want engineers, they wanted xenomorph and Covenant promises to bring the Starbeast back.” - NinXeno426

That is another misunderstanding, I thought that the Engineers were interesting. New monsters was also a thing about Prometheus that I liked although the Zombie Fifield was lame. Fifield was better as a monster compared to how he was as a human, LOL. As a human he had no redeeming qualities, he was just an asshole and that’s that. If anyone here can find anything positive about him let me know because I have tried.

“David the lonely perfection of his dreams take center stage.” - NinXeno426

Which was a mistake, he was written as a psychotic dictator and it was all about David. I don’t really care about him that much. They could leave him out and it would be OK at least if they would have planned to write him as they did in Covenant (he was more subtle in Prometheus and therefore better).

“The franchise is a mess...”

I totally agree, it can get worse but not much.

Give me an interesting story and well-written human characters that I can believe in because right now there is none. I am not into the novels and comics, I just follow the movies.

“This means those wanting to get to such a Conclusion, and Climax would have to first sit through 2 hours of Ridley Scotts David/AI movie...” - BigDave

Please save me from that shit, I am not the least interested. Another David movie will get thumbs down from me but if Ridley is that stubborn then he has himself to blame unless they understand that it is the human journey that is the important things. A AI movie as in a David movie, will get my immediate dis-interest.

I answer with this Star Wars clip, short but very effective. :D

“Those who wished for the tried and true Xenomorph slasher flick seem to be in the minority.” - Chris

At least that wasn’t my problem. I would have gladly watch more about the Engineers. There are more things in the alienverse than the Xenos. You can add fear by doing other things as long as we care about those that face the danger of which there were not a lot of in AC or P.

RickT:

I understand what you are trying to say but what if that would mean that we would get another movie like Resurrection and /or Covenant? To me that would be bad so what I am trying to say is that they need to care about the characters other than the androids and they also need to put a leech on Scott and not let him interfere with the story.

BD:

I like how she was done in the Crossing, she just seemed to act better there. A character like that would have been a lot better than how she was in Prometheus. You mention Ripley, she is in a league of herself so to top that would be difficult but that doesn’t mean that they can not get a good and sympathetic charter, something that Shaw lacked. Daniels was too much like Ripley and her character development (I hope that is the word) was too rushed yes I know about limitations of run-time but anyways but I don’t think that she had much of a personality anyways.

You speak about a novel, I think that character development should be in a movie and be well done, otherwise it is a failure. In a way I don't blame you since Prometheus was what it was but I think that these things should stay in the movies even if that means cut some parts or give these things less time. Story first character second, everything else comes after that and if you can not build up the characters because you think that more time is needed for more less important things then cut those things to develop the characters.

"... throwing Dr Shaw under the Bus and Engineers was a wasted Potential, just to please the Fanboys!"

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumAlien Awakening,Alien 5,AVP 3,or Alien Isolation? What's best for the future of Alien on film?

I like what Chris says about science and exploration, (science fiction, you know) but still have that fear thing. Prometheus did many good things like giving us the Engineers and the black goo. Those two things should be expanded on I think but what is the most important thing is to have humans to see ourselves in, that we can related to. Many of the ideas in Prometheus were interesting, they failed with most of the human characters which was its downfall. One problem could be that many were disappointed in P so they might think that it is a continuation of a movie that did not make a lot of sense but maybe some of that could be worked on. Do not leave Scott alone or else we will get another movie about David because that is all that he seems to care about.

My three point list with complaints about Covenant:

    • Too much about David
    • Too little about the humans and that the human characters were not well written and or executed
    • No Engineers (those in the beginning do not really count since they were just there for some seconds or what ever it was)

Abandoning the prequels, if that means that it will be vague if the android created the Xeno or not (no matter what Scott says) then I am all for it. Sure some would like to know but then it would also leave us with the possibility that there are those above the Engineers for those that dislike the Engineers being hinted as as the SJ. It depends on what kinds of plans that they have and if they have understood what the criticism of the prequels are. If they still believe what they did after Prometheus then they haven't understood that.

Killing David would be better than to get another movie about him, that is where I stand on that issue. Sure they can keep him but don’t let the movie be about him.

Maybe the Xenos can develop without a queen? Egg-morphing seems interesting, maybe there are other ways that they can make that happen too? We have seen the queen so many times so I am not that interested in it but if they really have nothing better than that then OK I watch it.

Retconning the prequels, it can not get much worse than it is now so maybe if they end up in a totally silly way then that could be an option. Hopefully they can make a third prequel that at least is there with Aliens but I don't know. Maybe let the guy that made 28 Days Later direct it, that would be interesting.

Re-engineered humans like Big Dave says seems interesting.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumIs Amanda Ripley the future?

As much as a let-down as the prequels are I am glad that they are not connected to Ripley. Maybe they think that the movies did bad because of that but I think that it is one of their strengths. The universe is big so why must every movie, comic, and so on be about someone connected to her (not all but many of them)? Give me new and well done characters and avoid to throw her into everything, maybe someone tied to Vasques would work (don’t ask me how because I don’t know).

“Several new hero/heroines have failed to hit the mark like Shaw, Daniels, Tennessee, Lex (AVP) to name a few.”

That is not because they were not like her, that is because they were poorly written and/or executed. Like they had writers that didn’t know how to make human characters or that were told to focus on other things, what ever the case may be.

Star Wars has more characters than the Skywalkers and the Alien franchise has more than Ripley. Give me well done characters and a lot of it is fixed.

Don’t cook the characters by sort of recycling, time to look beyond Ripley and related.

Yes, indeed I agree the prequels NEED a closure! A Huge Scott fan, but neither Female leads in them though did I feel anything for(a brief time for Waterston's character in the beginning for her cinematic Captain hubby James Franco's diminished cameo, but I did actually like Tennesee). David IS the only character to keep it going for the future narrative that leads up to Scott's definitive film, maybe the Ash will series be introduced...

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumWe are NOT Alone! Or are we?

Its one of the Big Unknowns... unless we get more signals in Future and where we can maybe see a Pattern we could try and Translate into some Code.... it is open for Debate.

One thing is for sure is even if we had in say 10 years some Technology where we could Transport to that System in a INSTANT!  we could GO ANYWHERE in the Universe in a Blink of a Eye.

IF we went to that System 1.5 Billion Light years away, and a CIVILIZATION had sent that Signal... well there would likely be NOTHING there now!

Space is so VAST!  our System is a even less than a Grain of Sand/Dirt even on Mars!   If there was a ALIEN Race who could Travel anywhere in a Instant... thats not to say they would detect Earth out of the Billions and Billions of Systems... and so if this RACE was 1.5 Billion Light Years away and detected our Radio Signals... by the time they got them  we ON Earth would be 1.5 Billion Years in the Future.

And what would remain of Earth and Humanity then?

There is some FEAR by some, and a number of Sci-Fi movies have ran with this FEAR, that we should not be Broadcasting into Space.... because we could ALERT some Alien Species that we are HERE...

And if they are NOT Benevolent, then that could Spell our DOOM... Ridley Scott even mentioned about it a few years back.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumContinuity is a fickle b@#@ with a short attention span

"Another thing regarding Scotts prequels.I believe it's been noted that they at times seem to disregard everything but ALIEN,including Aliens."

Good Point to bring up..... and you could be CORRECT!

Who knows what Vision RS would have had if he was able to had made ALIEN 2 and ALIEN 3....  i doubt it would have been too similar to Camerons Aliens..

Ridley Scotts sequels open some In-Continuity within the Franchise.... such as WHY bother with Hadleys Hope when there is LV-223, and now Planet 4 and potentially Origae-6 as far as where to obtain Xenomorphs or the Tools/Knowledge required to Create One!

What becomes of these places by the time of ALIENS that means the Company only pursue the Xenomorph via Ripley and her Queen Chest Buster/DNA!

We then have the ENGINEERS.. why do we not see or reference them in the Franchise after ALIEN? and with the Prequels... we have to ask WHERE have all the Engineers Gone?

Once other Engineers FAR FAR away detect Mankind is around and can Travel the Stars... depending HOW Many/Few Engineers remain, should they surely NOT want to come back to our Solar System and ERADICATE US?

Ridley Scott talked about his Plans for WAR OF THE WORLDS...  regarding what happens when Engineers Return and other stuff.... well such a PLOT would surely Cause Continuity Problems with the Franchise!

NOT IF ALIENS on wards are Ignored!

Is there any Evidence this may have been his Plan?  Well in the Run Up to Covenant and Discussing Sequels....  Ridley Scott did hint about bringing Ripley Back and mentioned you could DE-AGE her....  WHY would we need to do that, WHY bring back a Ripley who would appear like she did in ALIEN or ALIENS... or did he mean a Ripley before ALIEN?

Or as i have mentioned before on here... is this  CLUE that RS would have liked to have Ret-conned ALIENS like Blomkamp was going to do with ALIEN 3?

If indeed Ridley Scott had planed to make it his Prequels, ALIEN and then continue after Alien with his own ideas, then NOTHING in the Prequels would cause any In-Continuity with the Future after ALIEN and certainly regarding Ridley Scotts  planned WAR OF THE WORLDS

So maybe his Plan was to IGNORE the Franchise after ALIEN?

Reply
BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumContinuity is a fickle b@#@ with a short attention span

Indeed that seems to be a issue with any sequel to some Movie Franchises, there is not a lot of thought concerning In-Continuity.... i would say with TERMINATOR they have Time-Travel to get around such things, because with Time-Travel Events of the Past/Future can be changed...

Thank Goodness we dont have Time-Travel in the Alien Franchise.

The Star Wars Franchise is not so bad in respects to In-Continuity as they do link up to each other EP1-9 but its a case of how often can they continue the same Saga!  20 years, 30 years time could they consider a Re-boot!

Star Wars had tried something different with a Parallel Story that Connects to the First Movie with Rogue One which i think was a Good Movie and i think its better than the Prequels and the New Trilogy so Far.... ALIEN could do with something similar.

Han-Solo is a different Kettle of Fish all together, but Disney and a bit Goofy... but i think a Lesson should be Learned here for ALIEN....  if we went to do a Alien Prequel that was about a Younger Ripley.. we could be setting ourselves up for the same kind of Disappointment...  to be fair Han-Solo could have been better if the Character and some other elements were more Faithful to the Original.  But i guess in defense how many people change compared to when they was younger, i.e in there early 20's compared to early 40's.

Amanda Ripley was a interesting thing to explore... but i do think if this Saga is Milked it could end up not being as important...  We needed a Isolation Sequel... as either a Game, Movie or 6 Series TV Show... but then if we have too much Amanda Ripley, you risk Diluting her...

So i think they have to think of other things and NOT have to connect to Ripley just because its what some Fans expect... i mean RS even hinted the Prequels could connect to Ripley Some How!   Which got Fans wondering is Daniels Ripleys Mother?

But this would not FIT within the Given Time-Line and Background for Ellen Ripley but who knows what they could change... i think RS meant it as in Spiritually as in we would be seeing Daniels being shaped to be a NEW Ripley... which she clearly is NOT.

I'm still against rebooting as well.I know i use it as an example too often but Terminator is a good example regardless. We have Terminator and Terminator 2,then we have a 3 which made numerous continuity errors(have to consult my brother for that one)Then Salvation which was 4 and a soft reboot. Then there's the tv series that ignores the latter films. Then Genisys was yet another reboot that discarded 3,4 and Tv series only to fail which leaves us with this years new reboot that acts as a "true Terminator 3". It's a mess to say the least

I mentioned we really NEED Two Novels...

ONE to Cover Events Relating to David and Dr Shaw from when she collected his Head/Body until Months/Years prior to the Arrival of the Covenant Ship.

ONE that covers what happens from the END of Alien Covenant, to the point or after the Point THINGS GO TO POT!

THEN.... a Movie set in the Aftermath that either connects us to ALIEN or concludes the Aftermath of Davids Horror Show but shows us these events Do-Not lead to ALIEN

The other OPTION would be the idea above would be a 3RD NOVEL... leaving something NEW to explore for a MOVIE.

Right NOW...... we still dont know what happens to...

*LV-223

*Planet 4

*Origae-6 (and the Covenant)

These places should all END-UP with something related to the Xenomorph, Black Goo and Engineers and their Technology... and EVEN IF NOT..

Are these the only Places in the Galaxy were the Engineers have been/are, their Technology is/was and the Experiments/Black Goo and Xenomorph or Related Bio-Weapons are?

I DOUBT IT...

So there is Plenty of Places to set a Movie that does-not have to connect to LV-426 or Ripley in any shape or Form!
