Ati The Star Wars franchise is clearly the favorite (the commercial Juggernaut :)) and does not need off shoots like I was describing. The Alien franchise has a huge base but it doesn't really reflect at the Box Office. There are no cute harmless creatures to lure kids. I just think it could succeed by going in a different direction other than the silver screen. If it is all about chasing the bottom line, then the franchise should have ended with the Quadrilogy imo.
Dark Nebula - Thank you for the images.
dk - 'Nice pointing out all those details'
Thank you.
Ingeniero - Glad you think it's interesting.
Great video:
15 Planets We've Found You Won't Believe Exist
Ingeniero - Glad you like it. The site https://futurism.com/ is fantastic!
dk - 'Each episode would last an hour and be in real time for a 12 hour period- 12 episodes.'
These are good ideas but I'm sure we won't see a series in the Alien Universe soon.
Let's look at the Star Wars franchise.
It's 2017 and we do not have a live action Star Wars show in spite of the fact that The Force Awakens earned $2,068,223,624 worldwide. (box office mojo info)
And The Force Awakens brought this money in spite of the fact that it is the worst episode of the Saga - in my opinion.
I see Ridley as trying to retrofit a delivery system around a well known concept. I think he knows exactly what he is up against, and is completely right in saying that something new needs to be introduced. I think this is why Ridley is going down the rogue AI route and setting things up for a third movie that can create a story that does not have the predictability of Prometheus or AC. Ridley has left a massive trail of mysteries and unanswered question. I believe this is to set the stage, or possibly more accurately, reset the stage so as to create an almost blank canvass. Of course there will be elements that we have come to expect within the franchise, but for the most part we know we can be sure that the only surviving character that can serve as a reference point is David.
Ridley wanted to produce a trilogy from the start. The last thing he is going to do is reveal, or even hint at the end game at the start of a project, that would be like telling someone to go and watch The Usual Suspects because Kevin Spacey is Keyser Soze. Ridley has his head screwed on, which is what I take from him saying that he is ahead of the curve. I don’t think Ridley has lost his passion. I think he is just very aware that there are certain things you need to have in place in order to make something work, and if in the process that means pissing people off, then that is what will happen, and has been happening.
As a big fan of comedy and horror, I find that to be effective both require knowing how to deliver a punch line. I think with the original Alien, it was filled with many unknowns and did not really use any established tropes which the franchise has built upon. Alien is a movie that has you believing that there is a monster under the bed, and it is not until we get past Aliens that the monster under the bed becomes less of an unknown territory. Gradually a familiarity sets in and the beast becomes cooked. The problem as I see it, is now you know it is safe too look under the bed, can something be created to get you back in the bed and in fear of something else. This where I think new unknowns need to be created. I think Prometheus and AC lack enough unknowns of an unpredictable nature. I would love to see someone like Mark Gattis get involved with the screenplay for the Alien franchise, since he has an ability to create characters that can creep people out and knows how to deliver a punch line.
What needs to be delivered to the question of what happened to the monsters under the bed, is being told that everything is fine, and that the reason there are no monsters under the bed is because the clown in the attic ate them.
MonsterZero Interesting idea- knowing that you will be cloned into a world of mechanical manipulation when you were told it was a way to become immortal perhaps? Seems people would be looking at ways to kill themselves instead of fighting to survive. Not sure if that is your idea, but it seems like a unique premise.
Xeno was scary for one movie...Now it's like Frankenstein's monster. No mystery.
I want true cosmic horror...unspeakable dread. Not just human size bugs.
A.I is VERY close to cosmic horror....It will come to your planet and torture you for thousands of years. I'd go insane after 3 or 4 minutes of extreme torture...but the AI would 'cure' me and start again!
You are not safe on a planet with AI enabled...Death is your only option....Pray they don't clone you.
Well, I started this so should give an example. This would be in the form of a mini series while ripping of 24. What could be scary is getting face hugged and impregnated. The victim has 24 hours to do something and things get progressively more difficult as the creature gestates. Each episode would last an hour and be in real time for a 12 hour period- 12 episodes.
You're welcome Netflix lol!
Don't care if I ever see another Xenomorph again....A L I E N was perfect, that was all I ever wanted to see of that creature...leave the rest to my imagination...For Alien2 I would have moved on to something really terrifying.
Aliens was just a bunch of dudes(xenos) standing around.....scared of fire.
joylitt No way, and that is one of the reasons I hate on Prometheus. Wasn't in the name but we all knew what it was supposed to be.
dk Would you go to see a movie called "Alien" with no aliens in it?
Spoof versions are one thing. Continuing the series in a serious manner is another. I think the Alien name should be kept. Honestly, if something came out without acknowledging "Alien" in the title, I would probably pass it by.
That poll is interesting but there could be more to it. There are probably protest votes, votes genuinely wanting one or the other etc. Not a bad voter turn out- roughly 17% of the forum. It would be nice to see more break down though.
Numbers based on votes and members on the forum. I do not know membership on AVPG.
Dracula, Frankenstein and many other had countless spoof versions, Abbott & Costello, Mel Brooks, etc. And after all that you can still get Francis Coppola's "Dracula". It is a director's responsibility and it is his choice to make it scary or not.
"How could Awakening be good?"
Have you ever seen a movie with a horse that has machine guns coming out of it's mouth?
Alien: Awakening could give you that red0guy if it's close to the Alien: Covenant Origins. I believe the visions in the story are of Engineers chewed up by some type of xenomorph but it is unclear.
The story is mostly about Sergeant Lope and Rosenthal. The characters of Alien: Covenant are well developed in the novelization and the story does provide great background. Hideo Yutani's existence in the novel would be great on screen.
I think this poll is not as much backing to Blomkampt's project as it is a rejection to Ridley's persistence on deviating from the themes and narrative that made Alien, Alien.
"but I shouldn't have to go buy a book to fill in the gaps of a movie either"
Amen ali81.
Bring on the Alien: Awakening analysis. Thank you.
I think it is a selfish attitude to say the monster "has almost run out". It is like he wants to bury it thus preventing other directors to keep on digging into the mythology of the xenomorph. I would say the beast is cooked only because Ridley Scott rendered it superfluous in Alien Covenant.
I went to Rob Zombie's concerts in the 1990s I Moon Girl. I like his dancers' tattoos.
I watched "Jodorowsky's Dune" joylitt.
We missed out (source) on what that team would have produced. And Prometheus would have looked different as well.

I'm surprised to see new AvP sites still being made. Nice job though!
Great comparison with Nut Dark Nebula and there is no doubt that Giger used some rendition of the Goddess Nut in his work.

Amazing analysis of Giger's image Ati. The Holloway example is epic.
It is disappointing to hear the commercial consideration in Ridley Scott's decision but it does take money to make films. These are "Alien" films and I'm sure we will always see some version of it alongside any new storyline expanding on AI, Earth, or whatever.
Does the Alien 5 they (50%) prefer to see include a Predator or Chucky in it?
drucea They become a joke like Freddy and Jason movies.
Bingo! I said exactly that in the past.

It has to stay fresh though- otherwise it could become a characiture of itself.
It is tough to be scared of this after all.

The alien is embedded in the pop culture. I don't understand how you can turn your back on that.
drucea Then they just need to drop the Alien name. That is misleading advertising. However, I think the monster is alive and kicking for whoever wants to revamp it, expand on its origins and try different settings and situations.
I thought of the shape of the female resembling the derelict. I thought the simliarities between the female with the egg coming from the middle and the derelict containing eggs was interesting, but also thought it was a bit of a stretch.
He was passionate about the universe expanding I think. That's why Prometheus was so different, but good. APparently he didn't want to bring the Alien back in until later, but stuck it back in because that's the alien. The Alien is cooked, as he said before. You can't just keep making the same monster attack a group of people one by one in EVERY single sequel/prequel. If you can't expand on that and add more to it, why keep making them. They become a joke like Freddy and Jason movies.
