Loved this scene in both film and the novel and the way it comes full circle with Walter first getting to know David, "Whistle and I'll come.", and the novels interpretation of the first Xeno/Oram birth when David lulls the infant with a tune and the beast tries to imitate, establishing intelligence.

Weyland is the quintessential human and represents our species but his hubris, and by extension our own, led to his downfall and is the very reason the Engineers can't stand us living on any further.

Totally unfair! This is far from the greatest Alien franchise movie but it's a good one. I'd give it an 80%. It was the most entertaining movie I've seen in the cinemas in a long time. I am baffled by clusterfucks like The Force Awakens and The Avengers getting 90% while a much better film like Alien: Covenant can't even get a 70% from critics and is in the 50% from audiences. That's ridiculous. I guess the average moviegoer would rather see pointless after pointless superhero gangbangs and dead Star Wars films.

One of the highlights of Covenant was it's antagonist/protagonist David, very compelling and layered character that isn't some mustache twirling bad guy or a superhero villain that gets foiled. It's great to see the bad guy reign :)

It's sad because these "toys" are much better quality than the Star Wars or Marvel toys. Much more detail in them and look better overall. I guess the masses prefer trashy Rey and BB-8 figurines.

You shouldn't expect an R rated horror film to be a success with toys. The majority of toy customers are children and children aren't going to go see Alien films. Toys are more profitable with things like Star Wars because it's more childish and I expect Star Wars to be even more successful with toys because of the new kiddish shit they are putting into the films like Porgs and pointless cute robots. The Alien franchise is more about film quality while Star Wars (besides the originals) is about toys and merchandising and not quality films.

I blame the quality of the movie. I watched it twice and dont want to watch a third time. I watched alien and aliens at least 10 times each, alien 3, alien resurrection about 5 times each and prometheus about 8 times.

Thoughts_Dreams AC was "secretly" an AI focused story. So they could still get a lot of people in the movie theater who didn't know about it. Now imagine what we can expect of a movie that is promoted as a story about AI taking over the franchise. I can tell you in advance: no more that 15-20 million opening weekend, with 70% drop on the second weekend. Maybe 120 million foreign box office (being very optimistic). A movie like that, in order to be profitable, should have a budget not bigger than that of "It" (35 million)

Ati - OK, I see what you mean but I don't think you would get these kinds of differences in a population in 2000 years' time, only with selective breeding. You also suggested that they were special from the beginning (perfect engineers), pilots needed another physical strength perhaps? Well, I also see before me scientist on LV-223 not needing this physique. Anyway, we might get some answers in the next movie . . .

a - because LV-223 Engineers are special/engineered/perfect Engineers

I don't think that David is aware of that the outcome of a facehugged engineer would be an even more terrifying monster than the xenomorph he thinks he's created. :)

Gavin - 'Rather than a Shaw clone, I like the idea that Shaw was never dead and that David cloned her while she remained in hypersleep somewhere hidden on Planet 4.'
Yes, I had the same idea some months ago. Only the real Shaw!
'Narratively for Awakening, it could work well with Walter discovering the real Shaw as the Engineers arrive.'
And the title Awakening could work as well - in spite of the fact that I think I'm not the only one who doesn't like this title.
I hope they'll choose this storyline.

It's a hard decision when it's only 3 but personally for me it's:
1. David- yes he's evil but he's so interesting and Michael Fassbender does one of the best acting jobs I've ever seen. David is arguably one of the best things about the Alien prequels.
2. Brett & Parker- yes, I'm kind of cheating on my own rules but it's can be argued that Brett and Parker would be totally different characters without one another. Together we get humor and they are very realistic blue collar workers just doing their job but get caught up in a horrible situation. Right!
3. Bishop- I like him because he's not only a friendly android but he's such an interesting character. I love how he is sensitive about being called syhnetic and prefers the term "artificial person." Lance Henricksen does such a good job.

Rather than a Shaw clone, I like the idea that Shaw was never dead and that David cloned her while she remained in hypersleep somewhere hidden on Planet 4.
Narratively for Awakening, it could work well with Walter discovering the real Shaw as the Engineers arrive. We have already discussed how furious the Engineers would be at David, but hell hath no fury for a woman scorned - imagine Shaw's anger and hatred towards David after discovering that he had cloned her and used those clones to develop his version of the perfect organism.
I say his version as I believe it is the Engineers version of the same creature that will prove to be the biomechanical nightmare we were introduced to in the 1979 original. I don't feel as though David created the Xenomorph nor becomes the Space Jockey, but I do feel as though Davids crusade is what made Weyland Yutani aware of the Xenomorph.

"I would say he observed a bit, but i guess the rest he could learn as he goes along.."
But that would almost be like asking how long it takes for an AI to learn tings. Would it just take him one observation to learn how what ever something works if he watches someone else doing something (like making a sop, or what ever).

Ripley didn't become extremely interesting until Alien 3. Anyways here is a list
1. Clemens: There is something about this character that I find interesting. Among the prisoners he is like an outsider which keeps for himself. He is not a loudmouth but is independent, I like that.
2. Vasques: She has that take-no-shit kind of attitude, I like that.
3. Bishop: He just seems like a nice character. He seems to be calm and friendly, my favorite android this far.
AtiAlien: Covenant ForumEngineer Crypts?Oct 17, 2017Reply
chli - It was confirmed by Scott and others that they are Engineers.
Why do they look different?
LV-223 Engineers jumped in their chambers 2000 years ago. They were special Engineers (soldiers) wearing special suits.
LV-223 outbreak/2000 years/changes in their culture and lifestyle/shift of focus/David speaks about it in the Advent video, etc.
That's why Planet 4 Engineers are so simple...

Yes, I agree that the connection between the humanoids we saw on Planet 4 and the engineers we met on LV-223 is interesting, especially since they are very different. The engineers on LV-223 were bigger and albinos for instance. And a book or documentary about engineer culture would be nice. :)

It appears that the larger Engineer ship also rose out of an underground recess as well in the Wayne Haag concept art below.

The larger ship seems to be ready to intercept the juggernaut in the clouds in the upper left. This has to be an impressive underground structure.
