These two facts are behind the decision, no doubt:
“Extinction” would have had some strong competition, as it was set to open against Fox’s science-fiction adventure “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” and Sony’s Matthew McConaughey crime drama “White Boy Rick” from Studio 8.
Universal’s upcoming films include “Pitch Perfect 3” on Dec. 22, “Insidious: The Last Key” on Jan. 5 and “Fifty Shades Freed” on Feb. 9.
BigDave - 'I see no evidence like in his previous comments that totally disregard the Xenomorph, people had become up in arms about the last few comments RS made a few months back and automatically assumed we are getting NO Xenomorphs and just another DAVID show.'
Thank you for highlighting again that there are some members here on the site who continuously try to reconstruct the meaning of Scott's words attempting to control our opinion about his plans.
It seems age is just a number for Ridley Scott.
They didn't give any reason for that so it is pointless to speculate on the topic as being uninteresting. Let's wait and see what was the real reason.
I will be that guy and pose the question. With all due respect, at 80 and working on other projects, how much mojo might he have left for this franchise?
Spearfish Honestly, do you think Ridley Scott even remembers about the black goo? his comments suggest a great disdain for the sci-fi horror genre he helped create. He does not believe in it anymore. So just expect to get a lot more of philosophical mumbo jumbo in a no budget flick he's gonna rush to deliver so he can be done with his contract and exit this not so successful business endeavor. And to think he once tried to sell this as a Star Wars type franchise!!!!!!
Thanks for the letter, dk.
You have my support.
It may be a good idea to even send our letters to Disney when the takeover is confirmed, kind of pestering Andy Dufresne did in Shawshank Redemption.
I'm sure I'll read and watch everything about the next film as long as Ridley Scott is at the helm. Not afraid of spoilers.
I would have liked that Ridley left other projects aside and focus on the next alien film. I wouldn't want to wait another two years.
Well, I'm curious about what Ridley Scott wants to do. Even if it's an AI centered film it will be in the alien universe. It might be better than other AI films that are set on earth.
Go ahead Ridley, don't disarm in front of the Aliens/Cameron fanboys.
...or they can just troll us with stuff like this.

Well joylitt you forget to mention BR which only made 1.7 of it's production costs (is it already profitable). It seems people want something else.
All I can say is that Ridley Scott is not the only one interested in this "hot topic". Ex Machina did it, and Luke Scott's "Morgan" as well, which is pretty awful and a bomb also. Audiences are already tired about it. But what happened with that movie from Universal was unprecedented.
The article said it was pulled from the release date due to competition but I didn't see that it was permanently shelved. "Other options" could mean a different release date? The theme itself sounds interesting enough although it seems a bit spoilerish saying the dreams are prophetic.
It will be said that we can choose not to watch trailers but most of us including myself simply cannot resist, especially on this forum where everyone else is talking about it!
What about why the goo was made? Human VX gas is a much better solution if mass death is the goal while maintaining the topography. Was the goo to build an army? If so, what is the lifespan of a morph/soldier? Do they get old, have kids and develop a bad back? Or do they die after a short period of time like a seasonal insect?
On to rogue AI, how about David develop anti-EMP technology, because that is what AI will ultimately need. I also question what David gains from all this work toward genecide of a species that he is years (distance) away from? He needs someone to tell him to move on - like an AI support group. if it is retribution for some injustice, then that really isn't supported by the notion of a superior being with the Galaxy and time at his finger tips - he should know he's above it?
If he is doing all of this just to create, to create something/anything. Then that is a bit strange that he would chose to create a biological being. He is already above that? Create a better version of himself and let monuments be erected of him in all his glory. And if we follow the arc we know, if the supposed biomech verion is his glory, then it was a massive failure via Ripley (I think the biomech aspect was a limitation of suit design at the time and is a problem now for the writers trying to lace this together).
Or does he want all life eraticated and for him to be alone, proving that no higher force (God) is perpetuating life? Maybe he just wants to see if he can be God. But that would mean to reign supreme over a creation that seeks good amongst the faults. For his creation to aspire to be as he is. That is not what we have seen as canon for the xenomorph. It just kills.
nice research into travel times!
dk said, "Whatever the case, they should go lighter on trailers and teasers. They only built up expectations many felt were unmet."
I agree. Ridley needs to keep expectations in check. In all honestly, I think he just needs to keep his mouth shut and that needs to reflect in the trailers as well. He just needs to say when he KNOWS the movie is coming out and commit himself to meeting that date. I don't want a year delay like what happened for Alien: Covenant. Hopes went up, then get let down. This was even before trailers were released! Keep your mouth shut Ridley. Stop spoiling it! Let the movie speak for itself when it's released. I don't care what it's about; well, at least nothing more than a paragraph synopsis like Alien: Covenant had a long time ago.
I loved Alien: Covenant's synopsis. It went something like this, "People land on a planet that is paradise and find David as the only inhabitant."
My imagination went wild and I really LOVED the idea. That's all I need. That and trailers that keep there mouth shut, yet get the general public interested.
"If we go for the Recharge Cycle being every 9 Months that would mean Planet 4 is actually not far away at all."
We are talking the almighty Weyland-Yutani here and Yutani is investing himself FULLY into the Covenant mission. Nothing is going to stop him. He bred himself that way. I would say that the Covenant ship is equipped to travel SUPER fast and straight. There is not much need for handling if the mission was departed at the correct time and directed at the right area. If there is any need to alter course, MOTHER could change the course by an eighth of a degree for over 10 lightyears to move back on course. So, there is no need for anywhere near great handling. I would assume that the Covenant ship has the fastest engine possible for a space ship at the date of departure. Why wouldn't they plan for upgrades as the ship was being built. Basically, build an engine that you KNOW you are going to expand and make bigger as technology improves over the long time span needed to create the massive ship that the Covenant is. Plus, who knows how much room that engine takes up or what kind of engine it is. This engine could be HUGE!!! With the Weyland-Yutani, I'm sure they got there engines as a well kept, family-like secret. The same goes for any other company in the world of Alien: Covenant too.
There's not much need to travel fast when going short distances because you also got to slow down to land. With the Covenant, it's going a LONG distance, so it has the room to get up to some pretty high speeds.
This makes me think of the Nostromo too. I wonder what the engine is like on the Nostromo hauling a refinery behind it. It probably is loaded up with torque to get the start on tugging that beast behind it. The Nostromo doesn't need a fast engine since it can just refine the ores behind it. The Covenant needs a fast engine because the whole point of the mission is to get to Origae-6. Everything along the way to there is just wasting time. The sooner the colonist get on the planet, the sooner the purpose can start. Still, I'm sure there is a balance of economics in deciding how fast is economical. With regards to the Nostromo, I don't know how far that is from Earth. I guess I could look it up, but I'm not going to spend the time. Hopefully someone can chime in here with the answer because that could help (or hurt) what I am saying here.
To me, we can't compare the Covenant to other space ships because the Covenant is designed for a different mission. Plus, the Covenant is funded by Weyland-Yutani. We're talking the highest of tech partnered with the deepest pockets.
This topic on the Covenant spaceship specifications, to me, can get pretty deep and I'm just hitting some of the main points that I briefly thought of.
Still, what may seem like months to us which then makes us rightly think of short distances then may turn out to actually have been many lightyears traveled at ridiculous speeds beyond what we know in any of the Alien franchise.
Yes, this isn't a well thought out purposal (with reference to the distances traveled by the Nostromo for comparison to the Covenant), but I'm excited to here what other people have to say. Nostromo travelling distances could greatly help or hurt this purposal of what the Covenant can do with regards to speed.
We all know a certain a film director who loves underwater films too......
Ati there are some impressive ship designs there!!
I had to LOL at this one though

Is that a Space Jockey bahahah XD
An underwater encounter would be cool, just imagine a water ripple reflected chamber with a Xeno running around. The Bioshock series successfully did some very tense, and gripping underwater horrors.
Something like this by MacRebisz perhaps

My point, I guess, is the man in the suit was better. Humans are alpha predators (although i've learned here that some hate that fact), but facing an enhanced humanoid verion of us is nightmare-ish. especially when we birth it! Facing a hard plated cougar is not, not for me at least. I guess we are all different in that lane. BigDave, your optimism in RS is commendable.
dk: totally agree.espeicially revealing almost every single shot of the xenomorph in the trailers they also ruined what could have bean a great surprise. the backburster. if it wern't shown in the trailer everyone would be expecting a chestburster. then they would be shocked to see it come out of his back. instead not only were we informed of the backburster, most of us could tell exactly when it would happen almost 5 minuted in advance.
Ati: if foxx keeps the franchise they are not going to be willing to give as much money to awakening as covenant considering the box office dissapointment.
Whatever the case, they should go lighter on trailers and teasers. They only built up expectations many felt were unmet.
Very interesting Shoot, thanks for the Share.
I dont think they was any part of Prometheus however, but certainly seems something from Davids Imagination ;)
Quite a bit has seemed to change a bit from RS last two interviews, it would appear the Fall-Out from Alien Covenant has left RS/FOX having to think what let AC down. I would say they had plans to get another movie worked on ASP, but maybe the Negative Reception for AC has led them to have to reconsider things.
I cant see a Trailer this December, but i would not rule one out next December, if not a teaser as i would assume FOX would be wanting to release the next movie in 2019.
As far as Plot, i dont think it will cover anything set prior to the end of Alien Covenant, maybe just a few flash backs or dialect by David to explain things, but i dont think the movie will cover much of past events. I would assume it would mainly cover events set Months/Years after the Covenant Finally reaches Origae-6
@Ingeniero
Indeed i think it would be interesting to get a definite departure date of the Covenant, we know its 7.5 years from Origae-6 when it arrives near Planet 4, i thought the movie mentioned about Re-Charge every 18 months? or 16 Months?
I will have to watch the movie for a 4th time.
If we go for the Recharge Cycle being every 9 Months that would mean Planet 4 is actually not far away at all.
Thats interesting...
It will be interesting to see how far Technology Evolves on Earth over the next 25 years as i think between 2015 and 2040 will go down as a period where Technological Evolution could expand
The Xenomorph makes sense as a Perfect Weapon if it has a limited Life-Span.
The Black Goo appears to be a more limited one, (more destructive) unless again it has a limited Life-Span
Well this is the Ambiguous Element of the Franchise, its open for them to explore either route.. more so if you read into the Book, but then the movies are to be considered True Canon.
So it means they can explore it in a number of ways..
1) David Created the Precursor to the Xenomorph and the Engineers Evolve it.
2) David Evolves the Engineers Creation (Xenomorph)
I do think RS is going for David as the Creator however, but we know if so, his Xenomorph has to become more Aesthetically like the 1979 Xenomorph and has to get onto a Engineer Ship in their Thousands (Eggs) that just happens to be very close to LV-223
Thus..... Engineers and LV-223 i think will become the Final Pieces of this Puzzle.
I think a underwater scene would be good if it fits any purpose....
If David wishes to set up a Colony we have to ask WHY if he does not want to destroy them, but sure enough the Xenomorph must come into play at some point, and maybe David could take his creations to a under water Cave System.
I think this could be interesting if we go the route that David actually wants to go about and become some kind of King/Ruler of Origae-6 and i Predict we wont be far off that, i feel he will be seen as a Savior of the Covenant Mission, as he will cover his tracks and maybe give these Colonist a NEW Start.
But what if some manage to explore a underground Cave System that has Eggs and inadvertently unleash the Horrors on the Colony?
Another way to use a Underwater Scene? ATLANTIS if Origae-6 is a place that long long ago had a Humanoid Civilization but is long gone with no signs, until a Underwater Discovery is made.
I see no evidence like in his previous comments that totally disregard the Xenomorph, people had become up in arms about the last few comments RS made a few months back and automatically assumed we are getting NO Xenomorphs and just another DAVID show.
Fans need to try and read between the lines more, and remember RS does make mistakes and gets misquoted in his interviews... this latest one appears to be adding up to some points i have been making the last 6-8 weeks. I will look at his quotes now.
“I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff.”
Again this shows us that RS feels the Franchise is larger than just the Xenomorph and answering how it gets on the Derelict, it appears he wishes to introduce other elements and not give us a movie were we see those TWO Face Huggers lead to Queens and then Colonist turned into Masses of Xenomorphs like ALIENS.
"People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in Covenant and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.”
Again RS is saying that there are other things that are interesting rather than the Xenomorphs and that we dont need to be seeing Xenomorph based movies, and so RS thinks the REASONS for eh creating of the Xenomorph is more interesting, the REASON for why the company wishes to Pursuit such FOLLY
As much as it may disappoint some Fans, the Prequels have simply showed us the Xenomorph Strain is a Bio-Weapon that was intended to be used on Mankind, and gets Manipulated by David and so its a bit like the Chinese Inventing Gunpowder but then other cultures come along and Evolve its Application. And so our Xenomorph is relegated to just being a Weapon Created for Destruction.
RS will no doubt be wanting to explore the reasons for WHY the Engineers and David would wish to experiment with the Bio-Weapon.
So what RS is really getting at is we really know now how the Xenomorph in ALIEN came to be.
Black Goo Engineers Experimented on, Unleashed on a Engineer Homeworld and results experimented with more Black Goo to Create the Xenomorph... ALL THAT IS LEFT... is to show how TWO Face Huggers become Thousands and end up on a ENGINEER Ship. Plus how Davids Xenomorphs get Evolved.
And RS just feels that TWO movies to cover that is not needed, especially if it shows off lots of Xenomorphs and so its exploring WHY Davids Creations get Evolved and end up on Engineer Ship, and WHY this ship then happens to be close to LV-223 and then WHY the company has a great interest in the Organism in-spite of its Danger to Mankind.
And i think Angry, Jealous Sub-Creations Rebelling will be the KEY theme... i think RS could explore a connection between David and the LV-223 Engineers... and the Hubris in those Planet 4 Engineers maybe Engineer those LV-223 ones, like how in hindsight Mankind has done with creating its own Synthetic Sub-creation.
And Ultimately i am waiting for the reveal that the Company is being ruled by Machines while Mankind are oblivious so much like a MATRIX kind of Plot.
I think the next two movies would indeed give us some insight into what the company knows and give us the background reasons for Special Order 937 and what events lead to this issue being sent.
I think having a lot behind the scenes revolving AI is something that will be explored in the next two movies
ALIEN the Xenomorph was limited to how much you could show for a Man in a Monster Suit and so the Xenomorph design has evolved with the times and i would say the ALIEN: Isolation is more a visual representation of the Classic Xenomorph if we ever get to the one from ALIEN again.
The Animalistic Approach was a bit odd, it did not quite have the same cautious predatory instincts like we see in Alien, or Alien 3 but then those in Aliens and other movies also seem to act a bit animalistic too.
I think RS will stick with the Xenomorph in AC being the Precursor to the Alien one, and i expect Davids creation has some Evolution to go before we get to those Eggs on the Derelict
Thats still pretty close mind, and i think it depends in what way are those fans Split...
Is it they want a kind of Literal Alien 5? like Blomkamps?
Or is it more that they are displeased at the route RS has taken with Alien Covenant?
I would be more in favor of doing a Alien Covenant sequel but pray they get it right, as for a Alien 5 well just as i put in a recent Topic i made on the subject, i feel some of the Alien 5 ideas are neat, but the resurrecting the Queen and Ripley is something i think needs to be passed by.
I’d personally prefer to see where Ridley takes things for now. Blomkamp, I think is going through a bit of a transition period right now. Given what Blomkamp is now producing with Unity, I reckon by the time he has perfected what he is currently working on, jumping on board the Alien franchise a little further down the line would be great. I think now is just a little too soon for Blomkamp, but what he is producing is certainly worth taking a look at.

dk - There are so many fantastic and exciting shows and movies it is impossible to enjoy all of them - we have no time for them. :/
And this isn't 1960 either. Not saying I'm right, just saying that is what I recall reading. Past canon blown apart again in that the runner taught us they mimic thier host, except in Covenant the damn thing looks like it gestated in a grasshopper.
The Orville (2017-...) is a much better science-fiction series.
Fantastic show!
Penny Dreadful (2014-2016) Three seasons (18+)
Stars: Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett
'Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein, and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.'
Vampires, witches, Dorian Gray, etc... - created and written by John Logan, so do not be surprised if some lines from the Alien Covenant script appear in the episodes of the show.
'This show is definitely not your average telling of famous stories (vampires, Dorian Gray) as it takes the most gruesome aspects of those tales and incorporates them in whatever manner suits the storyline; Penny Dreadful does not shy away from the taboo, something that has been plaguing certain stories such as Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. This show loves the grotesque and downright sinister nature of storytelling and can depend on its actors to do the job right.'

'Ridley Scott says he will do another Alien movie with no horror and no alien'
It sounds like a brilliant idea, I think, since it would be the perfect Alien movie: the monster is in the darkness from the beginning to the end, and we have to use our creative imagination - and that sounds very scary.
