It sounds like Sigourney Weaver might be resurrecting Alien 5... Alien V has been stuck in development hell since before Alien: Covenant entered production back in 2017, but it appears the elusive fifth Alien instalment may have some legs left to stand on. During a panel at New York Comic-Con, franchise icon Sigourney Weaver teased reading 50 pages of the Alien V script written by Alien producer Walter Hill. She also mentioned having met with studio executives and even went as far to say that she intends to meet with Walter Hill again to explore where that story might go next...
[‘Alien’ producer] Walter Hill is a very good friend of mine, and he wrote 50 pages of where Ripley would be now, and they’re quite extraordinary,” Weaver on stage during a conversation moderated by Josh Horowitz. “I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox or Disney…I’ve never felt the need [to reprise the role]. I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover.’ What Walter has written seems so true to me, as very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind, but she’s a problem to them, so she’s sort of tucked away. I think it’s a very strong first 50 pages. I’m thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be.
The original plan for Alien 5 would have retconned both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection – writing both off as merely bad dreams; keeping Ripley, Hicks and Newt alive. It would have really blown the lid off some of Alien's most mysterious aspects as well – like having the Derelict spacecraft which crashed on LV-426 having been built by Xenomorphs using Human DNA... yeah.
It's unclear how many aspects of Neill Blomkamp's plans for Alien 5 were present in Walter Hill's draft that Sigourney read but it sounds like Ripley would have been deemed something of a conspiracy theorist and troublemaker – very akin to Sarah Connor's treatment in Terminator 2.
Regardless, the fact Sigourney mentions having intentions to meet with Walter to discuss where the story could go next is a fascinating and curious development. Could Disney be looking to expand their Alien plans to include Ripley again? Would this even be something fans would be open to? Or should Ridley's story remain concluded? Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 project was inevitably canceled following the merger between 20th Century Fox and Disney. Blomkamp had hoped to revive characters Hicks and Ripley for a new film, rewriting the Alien timeline, chalking up Alien 3 and Resurrection to mere bad dreams. Studio executives decided to can the project and instead took the franchise in a new direction, tapping Fede Alvarez to direct Alien: Romulus.
Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 is indefinitely shelved.
