MemberOvomorph07/17/2011I,ve been looking forward to this movie and seeing who the Space Jockeys are. But now I am not sure about this. Dallas in the original did not know who or what they were. This movie takes place 50 plus year earlier. News of these creatures would have been known about.

MemberOvomorph07/18/2011Humans on earth wouldn't know about the space jockeys if they weren't told. Sure, the mission to their world would be known by a select few, but if most of the crew die, and those that survive never return to earth? The space jockeys are proposed to be super-intelligent, so they may block transmissions back to earth or even wipe human memories.

MemberOvomorph07/18/2011Okay Dallas never heard of the Space Jockey. But Dallas and the crew were on their way home to earth. Is it possible they couldn't have heard due to being away?

MemberOvomorph07/18/2011It will be interesting to see the movie's explanation of how far and how fast they will travel to the Alien home world, light speed, time dilation etc.

MemberOvomorph07/18/2011Also how will the advancement in computers since 1979 Alien and the clunky PC - advanced at that time be shown. Will Prometheus computers be more advanced 50 years earlier?????

BizarroFett
MemberOvomorph07/20/2011well if the send a "secret mission" out to find them or whatever, it may not be public knowledge. i mean like the government is gonna tell EVERYONE about alien lifeforms.

MemberOvomorph07/27/2011The Space Jockey was supposed to be almost like a fossil. I can't see how it could have been fossilised that quickly... Don't get me wrong, I'm no scientist and I could be way off but I'm just hitting it out there to see what you other people think...

MemberOvomorph07/29/2011An atmosphere with high levels of methane, no carbon or oxygen, and deep cold (as Ash reported) would produce a fossilized creature rather quickly even if it is somewhat protected by the inside of a pierced ship hull.

Veteran MemberMemberOvomorph08/5/2011Hey Grik,
You know...I used to think Ash said "deep coal" as well. But years ago, I went back and read that section of the final script...and it reads as follows:
ASH
Rock, lava base. And cold...
well below the centrigrade line.
So, I think he does say "deep cold" in the film...not "deep coal". By the way, this post is intended to be informative and friendly, hopefully it's not too didactic.
Peace,
Neurion

MemberOvomorph08/9/2011If Ash says deep cold, then why does Dallas seem to get excited when Ash says it. Dallas says, "Ah hah." Saying deep cold doesn't make sense- it isn't a scientific term. Sounds like that part of the script didn't make sense and they did a last minute change, maybe.

Mr.J
MemberOvomorph08/9/2011The question is, How long did the company at the time know about the ship and what other knowledge they have. I am sure at this time they had many ships out and about exploring...so what did they find?

MemberOvomorph08/10/2011My theory is that Ash says "Deep Cold, well below the line." Meaning that there is some line, so artificial temperature at which life could exist, whatever that temperature is, and LV-426 is below that.
Plus....
You can not trust ANYTHING that ASH says in Alien.

Grik
MemberOvomorph08/11/2011I agree that he did say cold because that is in the script. The coldest anything can theoretically get is -273C, absolute zero. Life can still exist close to this temperature because there are microorganisms that survive the harshness of space. And, of course, the alien itself can survive in space as at the end of Alien when it tries to climb back into the Narcissus' thruster.
In my opinion it would have been more interesting if Ash did say coal because that has implications about LV-426. It would suggest that millions of years ago the planetoid supported life and perhaps the introduced aliens hunted that life to extinction. The space jockey ship, after all, had been there a long time. Just a subtle word like "coal" could have helped to build up an intriguing mythology.
