Space Jockey From Alien

I would guess this has been discussed, but I have not read anything lately. The Original Jockey from Alien - We have a good Idea of his demise. We Know the Ship must have crashed. Now, did he die/ chest burst while the ship was in flight, or after it landing? I tend to believe it happened Prior to crash / was reason it crashed. If not, why would he be in the chair if the ship is damaged and won't move? Some think that Promethues or a secondary ship from promethues collides with the Space Jockey ship, which could be, but I think the Chest Bursting happens around that time or prior to it. The only other reason he would still be in the chair is if he was knocked unconscious. I know come June we will get most answers - but they really boxed themselves in with the Space Jockey in the chair scene.
