Prometheus was a Titan hero in greek mythology, who stole fire from Zues and gave it to mankind. How does the name work its way into the plot of the film?

There are a lot of rumours going about. You asked a question about the SUIT? Here was one of many ideas! One of the humans (Cast) uses the SUIT( Space Jockey) to take control of the Space Jockey's bomber ship with samples of there eggs etc. back to earth. Possibly crash lands and ends up as the derelict ship on LV - 426???? It's all up in the air ha......

Don't know if this had any bearing on the choice for a name or not but I found it interesting especially since it is suggested that Prometheus is the name of the ship in the movie: Project Prometheus

@Biomechanic-Nice find! Too bad the U.S. economy is in the dumps right now, otherwise Project Prometheus would have had a better chance of coming to fruition. I wish space exploration was a higher priority than it is now. Instead, we have to deal with the problems of the world and pointless wars that eat up the funds. Couldn't help but notice the nice Star Trek reference to Deep Space 1. So cool how imagination influences real world situations and inventions.

I've already answered this in a previous post but the greek tale of prometheus has more implications than just the titan giving mankind fire. He gave mankind a new awakening with his interactions and was punished severely for it. I believe that, in Prometheus the film, the space jockeys will be divided in opinion. I think some will want to teach and develop humans while others will want to reign dominant over them. I think that a lone space jockey will defy his race and give mankind a new technology and knowledge. This will possibly lead to the discovery of FTL travel and space exploration- hence the Weyland- Yutani science vessel- "Prometheus".

Another interesting part of the Prometheus tale is Pandora's casket. She opened the casket given to her by the space jockeys and unleashed the alien, giving mankind much misery, lol. Maybe one of the cast in the film will be the equivalent of Pandora...

I'm still unsure as to what will be discovered in the expedition on Earth that leads the exploration team to seek out the Space Jockey race. I remember seeing a set pic awhile back that showed what looked to be a representation of a star constellation or map on the floor. Perhaps they use this constellation or even find coordinates to their planet and that's how the journey begins. I think FTL travel will already be an invention at the time of the discovery, but the findings on Earth is what will prompt the team to seek them out. I think the so-called "fire" that will be stolen is the substance hidden within the eggs/urns that we saw in the leaked screen caps awhile back. Whether this assists in the terra-forming process or is bio-source code for creating new life I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure this is the technology that will be taken away from the Space Jockeys.

Hey Hudson, I don't think there is an expedition on Earth. I think that was brought about by the bogus synopsis that was briefly circulated. As far as FTL, that I don't think could ever be achieved, because as matter approaches the speed of light its mass substantially increases. It's stated somewhere that a ship the size of the shuttle would be as big as earth at the speed of light. I don't think the Nostromo had FTL although it was never stated in the movie. I think Einstein-Rosen Bridges (wormholes) would be more practical. The Star Map that was seen on the floor could be locations of the wormholes that could be near our planet and their planet. A good movie example would be Wing Commander. Heck maybe the technology we steal from the Space Jockey's could be a means to artificially create wormholes. Wouldn't that be something. I don't know if terraforming would really be a technology that we could steal. Its something we've been doing to our planet for the last 40 years. Albeit it has been for the worse regarding our species unless we steal technology from the Jockey's that can do it in short order like in a single lifetime versus thousands of years. Regards, Rick

Humans aren't going to steal anything. They are going to be given the technology otherwise the name Prometheus has no meaning. Prometheus means forethought which imlpies that humans have been manipulated with the intention of some future goal for the manipulator.

LOL Ok, I'm going to be a bit whimsical here. So we don't really steal the technology but we are in possession of the stolen technology. After-all Prometheus was the one doing the stealing. Hey since the ships name is Prometheus maybe it steals the technology for the corporation with the help of the androids.

Hey did anyone know that the Frankenstein novel is subtitled The Modern Prometheus? The similarities may not end there. Could Scott be paying a bit of homage to Marry Shelly's Frankenstein, after all some consider it the very first work of science fiction. Perhaps the following description from Wikipedia would also fit Prometheus: "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel about a failed artificial life experiment that has produced a monster." - Frankenstein - Wikipedia
