News is slow as we all know, so here's a little topic I've thought of (didn't take long!) Are there any references to Alien/Prometheus that you have or do come across in everyday life? I'll start the ball rolling... - I live not far from a town called RIPLEY (in Derbyshire, UK) Your turn!

This might be a little out there but interesting none the less...in Revelations in the King James Bible I remember reading something about "an Abyss opening up just after the 5th trumpet being blown and smoke coming out of the abyss into the sky (not the good kind) and the smoke was like Locusts that looked like horses and had faces like men, teeth like Lions and had tails like scorpions!" And they come upon the Earth and punish mankind. Sounds like a great story for a biblical Alien invasion movie! oh ya they had hair like women too and not like the Children of Juda. Sorry Preditor fans! It's all in the head and not in the dread.

I saw the Movie "Paul" recently and right near the end, a really cool lady Punches Sigourney Weaver in the face and temporarily knocks her out, the thing of it is, she says this when she's does it.... "Get Away from her you Bitch" !!! The entire series of films is BURNED into our collective consciousness! Especially those who work in the film industry. It's a part of our Social "POP" Culture now. Almost every horror film since Alien has ripped it off in some way, but most of the imitations have focused on details — a slimy killing-machine monster that is both vaginal and penile; the dripping, cavernous interiors of the Nostromo; those immensely influential H. R. Giger "biomechanical" designs — and missed what you might call the overall Zeitgeist of the film. In...The Authorized Portfolio of Crew Insignias from the United States Commercial Spaceship Nostromo, Designs and Realizations...Ronald Cobb wrote... "I wanted to imply that poor old England is back on its feet and has united with the Japanese, who have taken over the building of spaceships the same way they have now with cars and supertankers. In coming up with a strange company name I thought of British Leyland and Toyota, but we couldn't use "Leyland-Toyota" in the film. Changing one letter gave me "Weylan," and "Yutani" was a Japanese neighbor of mine." NASA scientists have discovered a strange new organism, a lowly bacterium found in the mineral-rich waters of Mono Lake in Eastern California, whose existence raises hope of finding Alien life on other planets. The bacterium, with the catchy name of GFAJ-1, has managed to mutate its own structure, allowing it to survive in an environment entirely toxic to other living organisms. Scientists scooped up samples of the bacterium from Mono Lake and, in the lab, fed it a steady diet of the toxic mineral arsenic. Rather than going “belly up” as expected, the bacterium absorbed the arsenic, assimilating it into its building blocks, and even thrived and grew. The discovery has excited scientists and space buffs alike, because it raises hope of finding life on other planets. Previously, scientists believed that all life forms must depend on oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur, to exist. However, this new microbe was able to substitute arsenic for phosphorus, thus opening the door to strange and alien life forms previously not thought possible. Scientists are still uncertain whether the bacterium is a freaky one-off mutation, or whether their experiment proves the possibility of radical new forms of life. But they have already begun to radically re-think the questions related to life on other planets.

I agree , even if Alien owe alot to "the thing from outer space " who later gave birth to the fantastic Carpenter's "the thing" too , is still a perfect masterpiece...i think its impossible to get better than Alien regarding "scaring" sci fi . I still dont get the sexual references , yes giger liked to make everything look a sexual thing but if i watch the movie without any back thoughts i dont catch anything of sexual ... its like sayng that when you eat a sausage you express your homosexual side .

In the case of "Alien", the idea was to scare MEN...MEN, the sex off the two that isn't supposed to scare the easy, and this is why all of the MALES in ALIEN die...in fact, it is exactly why. That film was created with this idea at it's core. In fact, several of the deaths were references to the creatures supposed Bi-Sexuality. I do not particularly like that idea, but it is true that was in their heads at all times while they shot all of the death scenes in that movie. Look it up, I ain't kidding. In fact, when the creature finally kills the only other woman than Ripley, it is done with severely deliberate sexual overtones as the creature's extremeties zero in on her mid section. It was said at one point by Giger I believe that the idea behind the Impregnation of KANE was designed from the get go to be the cinematic equivalence of MALE RAPE!!!

Soooo they are invading earth for the fine pork sausages and mango chutney? Never got that impression from Alien, it was after both sexes and their pets. It's usual in Sci fi that the aliens/monsters are after the earth women except for one cheesy 1986 movie I saw once called Monsters in the Closet and the sequel: Monsters Coming out of the Closet. Soon to be a prequel: Monsters Under the Bed...sheeets. Though that's just after Gene Morph In a Bottle.

Spartacus , you theory is approved by alot of critics and movie reviewes ... but still i dont agree ...all the sex references were made MANY years after , some i think from an already sick O'Bannon and some others by ridley to keep the commentary more interesting . In the first interviews there is nothing like this . Anyway if you have someone impregnated with some other's eggs ...which hole you can use ?? i think the mouth is the only one usable in a mainstream movie :D ..we also know that the shift to a woman hero was a last time decision , well after the basic story was made . The only erotic part of the movie is ripley seminaked near the monster BUT that is the classic eroticism of the nude beauty near the monster :D So i dont deny some minor sexual references and erotism BUT i think is 90% smoke that was made to write about something ...in my opinion of course ( maybe its you that are right )

to tell you the truth, I do not care what they intended one way or another and agree with everything you all said...I just referenced it because I felt it would stimulate this kind of discussion which I think is cool. To me ALIEN was just about SCARING people properly in a way the movies hadn't done since, well, since Nosferatu or movies of that nature. I remember sitting in the theater with my 2 best friends 32 and some odd years ago and we , all three of us, FREAKED at the same time at the moment the dead facehugger left Kane's face and later during the subsequent search of the medical room fell onto Ripley's lap and we saw what it looked like underneath as ASH then began to examine it. I remember thinking this...FINALLY...a professionally done horror movie in which the GORE is completely credible....and frightening as all frikkin' hell. Could this be any better, and it couldn't, as we watched it, the three of us were literally squirming in our seats, it was OVERWHELMING the atmosphere that the first film created. I felt that everything in my post other than the references to implied sexuality, were really really good examples of ALIEN references in real life. And that NASA discovery is disturbing to me on so many levels!!! It is on a par with telling me there's a Good Chance an actual XENOMORPH exists out there. Reminds me of what has to be the SINGLE MOST APPROPRIATE AND enduring line in any of all the four films, and it IS NOT EVEN DEBATEABLE... IMO THAT IS...THERE WAS NO ONE LINE THAT DEFINED THIS SERIES OF FILMS ANY BETTER THAN THE LINE ISSUED BY THE CLONED RIPLEY AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF RESURRECTION.... "MY MOMMY ALWAYS SAID THERE WERE NO MONSTERS...NO REAL ONES....BUT THERE ARE" !!!

I don't really believe that these creatures like aliens really exists but I love it when film directors make movies out of aliens and other mysterious creatures. I even love the movie Harry Potter since a lot of fascinating creatures were there..:) Anyway just recently I read in an article that the animal actor who performed as Padfoot in the Harry Potter films was abandoned and is currently in an animal shelter in the United Kingdom and is ready for adoption. I found this article here: Former Harry Potter dog actor homeless

Ah yes, the subject of ALIEN eroticism. Hey Space-boys, I’ve got to concur with Spartacus on this one. Once one accepts the fact that Hans Ruedi Giger was, and is, is a complete sexual pervert, the sooner we can put this subject to “bed.” The bulk of Giger’s work includes penile, vaginal, mammary, and gratuitous, gluteus ASS shapes. When I say sexual pervert…I thoroughly mean it! H.R. takes the idea of conventional, human sexuality, and twists it into bizarre, grotesque, horrific…yet beautiful and harmonious images. And since I am a fan of sex myself…and probably a pervert as well…I say HUZZAH! WELL DONE “G”! Some of the best times I’ve ever had in the boudoir, could be classified as a little dark or disturbing…or at least shocking. WOW! Didn’t imagine writing about this when I woke up this morning. Anyhoo, I believe that the eroticism or sexual overtones (or undertones) were absolutely intended by the filmmakers…from the beginning: The vaginal openings in the Derelict ship. The Derelict interiors. The Egg and its opening. The oral penetration of the facehugger. The underside features of the facehugger (hopefully, no explanation necessary…) Ashes oral penetration of Ripley with the magazine (WHO DOES THAT?! Ha!). The phallus shaped Alien infant. The even more phallic shaped head of the “Big Guy.” The pornography hanging on the walls of the living quarters. Do we need to go on…? Whatta ya think FRANTZ? Yes…no…maybe? ~Neurion

Ok ok you want WAR then !! and war will be !! ;) The vaginal openings in the Derelict ship. - only if you say to me i will notice ...btw is part of giger stuff ..have no means to the movie . The Derelict interiors. - are bones to me The Egg and its opening. - dude no ..really , i hope you didnt had nothing sexual like this ...is more of a plant ..something like a carnivorous plant . The oral penetration of the facehugger. - again ..they cant use other holes to implang eggs ..and btw that is the only way to give breath ..they do in the hospital too , we call it intubation ( i hope it translate well ) The underside features of the facehugger - i can find you 98473 marine animals that are done in that way or parasites ..and you can find something sexual in every of them Ashes oral penetration of Ripley with the magazine (WHO DOES THAT?! Ha!). - is see like ashes learned by the facehugger how to suffocate people ..as you see he think alot before doing it The phallus shaped Alien infant. - then there are alot of phallic things in the world ..every thing that is a bit round shaped ... to be hones a football ball is more phallic than that The even more phallic shaped head of the “Big Guy.” - no no come on every insect is then a pervert ..that is a great design idea but phallic no come on ..then all the Popes hats have a phallic meaning . The pornography hanging on the walls of the living quarters. - that is a classic of every spaceship movie or war movie ... men beds are always covered with that ..in reality too so who won ??????? :))

Dear Frantz, It was not my intention to start a war with you…or anyone else. Although, I do like your spunk and feistiness. Especially, since France has a reputation of cowardice, I would’ve expected you to tuck tail and run. So, good for you! I like your style! I hope that translates clearly enough for you. Let me see if I can clear this up. Obviously, I’m not the greatest writer, and I’m apparently having a difficult time explaining my point. In my opinion, the psychosexual or pseudoerotic elements that I believe exist in the original ALIEN film, were not intended to be consciously obvious or directly identifiable to the viewer. They are woven through the fabric of the film, in order to create and provoke an emotional and psychological atmosphere that would be conducive to the telling of this strange tale. Most films, especially in the horror genre, are not so clever or well crafted. This is one of the prime reasons that ALIEN has stood the test of time. Like “THE EXOCIST,” it dared to take itself seriously, and thereby transcended the horror film “mold.” That is what separates it from all of the other garbage that has been produced over the past thirty some odd years. Think about it, if a man is infatuated with a woman, and he wants to impress her, it’s probably best not to knock her over the head with the idea. Like ALIEN’s filmmakers, he should create a conducive atmosphere in which to work his champagne. Romance her, charm her, woo her, seduuuuuuce her…then like Ridley Scott…and the Alien, go in for the kill. Well that’s my two cents. Are we still at war...Frantz? Ciao, ~Neurion P.S. Hope you don’t hate me for having a different interpretation than your own. XXXOOO

i was jocking :) thats why i did put the " :D" or " :)" ... i dont think i would be able to get angry about ****heads aliens :D my point is that OFTEN people , expecially journalist , critics in particular , have to write alot ..and so they start to see things that i honestly dont think they exist .. lets do a famous example ... GUERNICA of Picasso ..how many words they did spend on it ? the tragedy of war !! Symbols everywhere !! deep means in every paint drop !! all false !! all words used for nothing !! Picasso did this paint to symbolize the death of a "torero" , it did mean nothing with war while he was doing it ...a friend asked him a paint for a show and he did change the name of the paint ... so books , great words and big means wasted for nothing . I fear that we are doing a bit the same here but then dear friend we are always different people with different views and different tastes , and that is good :)

Hey Frantz, I apologize for misunderstanding your good and fair sense of internet banter and decorum. And I applaud you for not responding in a belligerent manner. You certainly out-classed me this time around. Though I still hold to my opinion regarding the afore mentioned subject, I whole heartedly agree with you in regard to self indulgent journalism by many critics. God help me! I hope I’m not “metamorphosing” into a thing I never wanted to be…A metro-sexual, clown, who spends far too much of my time on the internet, arguing with people I’ve never met…face to face…about a MOVIE! Holy crap…it must be true! Noooooooooooo! Sorry I misjudged you. Also, the translation does read a bit unintelligible sometimes. In addition, some of the :-) or “happy face” symbols do not show up clearly. It’s probably the same on your end :-) Paix, ~Neurion

Wow, quite the rant there you two. Hah, nothing wrong with a difference of opinion, it's what makes these forums exciting. However, I doubt Jonsey was referring to the sexual aspects in Giger's work with regards to Alien when he started this topic. ;)

That was some funny shit, I commend your knightly joust! It's just like that hidden scene in Alien where after the alien hits the box with the cat in it, then opens it and hugs Ripleys pussy! Hey, how many aliens does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, cause they like to see in the dark! Why didn't the space cockey cross the road? Cause he couldn't find the zipper? What to you call space men who have lost their minds? Astronuts! What came first the Xeno or the Egg? The egg cause I didn't say Xeno egg! U.F.O you Fuck Off
