Who would create such a flawed design as a human being and give it consciousness if it not were for an incredibly evil or amoral being? Also, wouldn't it be weird that the creators would actually look like their flawed creations to begin with?

Well Mac, I am sure the devil would agree with you that human beings are flawed seeing that he is made of fire and humans from stinky clay. Relating to Satans dialoge with God in regards to Satans opinion of his superiority over Man "Give Me Time! and I'll prove that Humans will disobey you!". Even the angels complained to God when he was going to create Adam. I do not agree that the flaw is in the creation but that evil is in the will of choice, but I do agree that it is weird that the creators would look like their creation. Certainly, more of a reflection of the obsession of jealous spirits!

Does that mean they're gonna start standing in line for "Air Jordans?" Plus the very idea of something gnawing away at my liver for all of eternity does not sit well with me. But if your gonna shoot someone fighting over your place in line for "Air Jordans" or for being the guy that created the guy that shot someone while in line for "Air Jordans" I guess that's what you deserve.

I was also referring to the apparent (as we have not seen the movie yet) difficulty of having believable human being creators in the story (even if they are not quite god-like) unless they are of the unsavory kind. Well, either way, it is actually incredibly hard to argue that human beings are designed by some intelligent designer who wants to design us in the best possible way; it makes way more sense that we are an outcome of an evolutionary process rather. If you don't believe me try to outrun a cheetah, swim faster than a dolphin, fight a gorilla, ask why we have blind spots on our eyes, why our skeletal structure is so weak, why we have only one heart that is not repairable, why not live more than 120 or so years, and on and on and on. Now we do have highly developed brains which is a clear advantage in survival, but that can also be explained by evolutionary process in a more satisfactory way. Even if we were actually designed by some higher beings, there is no way you can infer this from what we know know about ourselves at this pointing time; and DNA is just another set of atoms arranged in another peculiar way that behave in predictable manner as all other atoms in the universe BTW.

Well, we know not yet where in the evolutionary process the Engineers injected some 'nitrous oxide' into the system, so to speak. So how much more influence they could have had after leaving Earth is up for debate - especially with environmental factors moulding the human race in the meantime. Personally, I would be disappointed if the Engineers resembled human beings too closely. Unless the story indicates that the Engineers were directly responsible for the homo sapiens sapiens branch, close resemblance would be a setback to the plausibility of the story. I call it the Star Trek cop-out: where all aliens are humanoid to the point of ridicule - and they speak English... and at the correct pitch. Now of course, the plain English talking is necessary to facilitate dialogue for the benefit of the audience, but the average-height human with the ridged brows or pointy ears passing off for an extra-terrestrial?... it's only to keep production costs down. So I just hope Ridley avoids that route, although the "tall guy" is not helping! Aside: Just to be clear, you can also go too far in the other direction, what I call the Star Wars freak-out: where all aliens are invertebrate squiggles. I subscribe to the school-of-thought that suggests most intelligent life-forms would evolve to remotely resemble the humanoid form, because it best facilitates the attainment of intelligence. So the Predator or the Xenomorph are classic examples: distinctly not human, yet anthropomorphically humanoid.

I was only referring to physical qualities of humans and how difficult it is to insert human creators in a story and make it coherent and believable in this day and age. Now if the world of Alien movies is not a human one, or we assume the creators are evil or amoral, then that is another story. I mean, it is certainly possible that an animal like the xenomorph or an alien race could exist, it is not outside the realm of possibilities in the universe we know up to now, but to connect these to God-like beings is another matter (at least not easy in my view).

If we are going to get all relative about how "good" humans are, then I would say in the realm of the universe we are not good or evil we just "are". Good for the planet? Maybe humans are doing exactly what they were designed to do. Advance, kill off other life. Create technology. Are we earths Xenomorph? I don't think spiritual definitions of good and evil have and place in Ridleys universe which makes it more disturbing because it means humans are not only not at the top of the food chain but not chosen by god or anything significant at all.

.."Good for the planet? Maybe humans are doing exactly what they were designed to do. Advance, kill off other life. Create technology. Are we earths Xenomorph .." This is an interesting question and pertains to our movie as we now know it. We seek out the Engineers to see if they can save us from ourselves. After all don't we all seek answers and solutions? Unfortunately if the Engineers have determined we are not good for our world that is too bad for us. But we are here ansd I wish that our crew was a bit more resourceful a bit more knowledgeable and a bit less naive! Can any site members see a world where xenos, engineers, humans and other unkown species co-exist in a viable Universe? Perhaps RS was calling attention to current world conditions and telling us to work it out. Naw, it is just a movie.
