Engineer Prototype - Model GAJ84
MemberOvomorph01/2/2012An exerpt from "The Genius of the Derelict"
An overall view of the derelict's operation can now be hypothesized: According to the novelization by Dean Alan Scott ([11])[1], the derelict has been dead since at least one million years prior to Nostromo's landing. This lends credence to the hypothesis that whether there are more like it or not, the particular device/entity appears to be amongst the oldest organisms in existence, having extensive knowledge of science and technology to the point of managing to grow itself into a self-sufficient bio-mechanical state in the form of a ship, complete with offensive weapons and having the ability of interstellar travel[2]. As it travels, it simply "scans" entire star-systems looking for planets to infect. This could be achieved for example by scanning light sources for the presence of the spectrum of organic molecules via its telescoping device. The presence of organic molecules in star spectra usually betrays super-giant stars of class K and M, hence is a good indicator of the presence of older and more advanced civilizations around these stars. Once it finds life, it simply travels and lands on the corresponding planet, waiting for extraterrestrial life to come and examine it. In that sense, it resembles a giant spider, weaving its web on every planet it visits, akin to a giant uterus which gives birth to death.

MemberXenomorph01/2/2012I can agree with that in most part. The key for the jockey would be to manage mutliple selves over lightyears. This requires some sort of safe guards be them bio or mech. I don't think the ship is the SJ. I think the ship is a means to an end and that is all. The biological is the goal. Key is bio progression thus ensuring its memories and propogation of its memories and knowledge over a milennia. Key for all life forms is its ability to transcend its physical and move into the ethereal away from its flesh and more to its energy source and thus the never ending soul theory brought about by religion. I'm not debating religion but all forms be it Buddist, Hindi, Christian, or Muslim beleives in the enduring SOUL that transends the phyiscal and lives forever in the form of energy. Why not keep with this being so many people can relate to it? Just my opinion.

Rick

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Possible.
It's a concept that has been discussed. I like it. It's weird and disturbing.
But.... It obviously wasn't perfect. Something went wrong, or is sort of implied. The Engineers are dead....or are they....
Why does it infect planets? Just just to take over?
Does this "disease" obsorb and transform an entire planet and all its life and elements into a single living organism? Disturbing.
Is this technology the interstellar recycling bin of life? Distubing.
I hope R Scott reads this forum because I bet we've thought about this way more than he has. Maybe not lol!

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012I like your thinking Rick. Your post has sparked a thought, Could the big head be some kind of bio-mechanical hard-drive? Storing all the data/dna for various life forms?

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Rick - I couldn't have said it better myself. That summarizes what my own personal thoughs are into what IS the soul.

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012@ ArchEtech, I hope Ridley does lurk on the forums, it might give him ideas to further the franchise is Prometheus does well at the Box office. To think that us as a community could add to franchise is quite exciting. Who knows? In the credits for a future film or even Prometheus itself, we could see in the "Thanks" section "Promethus movie.com community" That would be awesome.

MemberOvomorph01/2/2012Ha they (Hollywood) tried to screw Geiger out of credits - don't hold your breath. But there are a lot of good ideas, and how cool would it be if he responded to some threads.

MemberOvomorph01/3/2012I'd just like to think that *whatever* the eventual 'explanation' the writers and Ridley give us about the 'Spacejockey' race and it's backstory/motivations, that it's as interesting as some of the various speculations I've come across here and other boards.
While I can happily go with a story of how some other 'unknown race' somehow 'engineered' our own beginnings (and perhaps other 'races' too) in the first place, it may not be revealed how the 'Engineers' actually came about themselves!
Anyway, although this movie may suggest that this particular 'race' of 'Spacejockeys' had a big hand in our own 'development'...I'll personally be content that they themselves could have just 'naturally evolved' over aeons due to certain 'natural' conditions alone...with no 'original God' entity needed...
And just to get a little deeper yet, I'm someone who's happy to believe that the 'Universe' (or 'Multiverse?) around us is merely the product of some random, unknown, purely NATURALLY-occurring 'fluctuation' which caused it to come about in the first place...rather than something that came about thanks to an overwhelmingly 'supernatural' cause who's own 'origin' would be a little problematic to explain...
I'm just trying to enjoy what time I have on this rock until I'm eventually 'no more' and blissfully 'unaware' of the fact...and am really looking forward to this particular movie in the meantime, lol! :)

MemberOvomorph01/3/2012Well, Ridley is 74 years old. So I doubt he would even know or even care about reading what fans are talking about.

MemberXenomorph01/3/2012Guys,
Realistically I doubt he knows about this site. He's swamped with projects I barely have time to keep up with this site myself between work and the kids. But lets keep hope alive its our greatest asset and our greatest weakness all in the same.

Rick

MemberOvomorph01/3/2012If the SJ is part of the ship that doesn't necessarily preclude the possibility of a crew. I'm thinking of the Pilot in the Farscape series. The Pilot and the ship are fused.
There are some great ideas being tossed around on this forum. We should write a screenplay

MemberOvomorph01/5/2012interesting, i prefer my own theory of course :) but this one is good, i like the darkness of it.
I like the idea of the alien being a deliberate part of the jockey and ship - as you have it - it is very much in line with their claim "you'll see the alien but you won't recognize it" ... the same DNA with many guises.
my own idea was that the jockeys go around seeding planets and harvesting them, planetary farmers, using time dilation to accelerate the time it takes their crop to reach maturity (from their near light speed travel POV), making round trips planting and reaping.
The alien is like a super-male, they don't just eat the biomass they breed into it ... to rapidly amplify their own genes on harvesting.
i like my idea that from their POV the entire evolution of a planet like ours is just like waiting for a fruit to ripen ... or even cooking a meal .. you can imagine a packet of planet seed with instructions "cook in sunlight for 4billion years, garnish and serve"
