MemberOvomorphFeb-25-2012 9:40 PMJerry Goldsmith, period.
His score made Alien that much more alien. Many of the following scores quoted Goldsmith's
signature ideas.

MemberOvomorphFeb-25-2012 9:55 PMI agree. Each one of the soundtracks in the Alien series accented the overall feel of the film. Just like the uniqueness of each film, the scores are just like that. Jerry Goldsmith's was chilling yet beautiful. James Horners score was very militaristic and adventurous. Elliot Goldenthal's score was just so dark and powerful, my GOD. John Frizzell's score was creepy and melodic. To say one is better than the other is a sin. I love them all.

MemberOvomorphFeb-25-2012 10:49 PM@ Ripley clone 8.. lol i get the distinct feeling from your previous threads that when it comes to the alien franchise you dont have a favourite mate lol.
But to be frank that's just not how most people respond in life and general, because if we didn't have preference's then there wouldn't be such a thing as good or bad taste, and without critique we couldn't tell shit from Shinola, hence we would have all manner of crap thrown at us and we wouldn't be non the wiser for it lol.
Constructive criticism is not only essential, its healthy, and encourages people to do better in my humble opinion .
In fairness to you all the films are worthy, and highly watchable but i would be a fool to deny that some are better than others.

MemberOvomorphFeb-25-2012 11:03 PM@alteredstate. Oh sure. I understand man. I'm just one of those few. You know what I mean. Critiscism is healthy but I just see the series in an all encompassing light. You know what I mean. It may sound silly but you know i'm different that way. I see the good in things. I love all the films. There like my children. I can't like one more than the other.
And oh sure I critique other films but the Alien series is one of the select few that I just can't. To me every film gave us something to appreciate. Whether it was good or bad to other people's eyes, to me they all stood out and they were not at all just crappy. Its hollywood you know what I mean. Nothing is ever "perfect". Yeah there's always going to be a general consensus but thats just a general opinion not really a statement of principal. I know a few Alien fans out there like me who can appreciate all the films but yes i'm different and i'm proud. I fly my freak flag proudly kind sir lol.

MemberOvomorphFeb-25-2012 11:36 PMfair point ripley clone 8, i had a feeling your maternal instincts kick in concerning the franchise .
I was dying to get to the bottom of your pov lol.

MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 12:54 PMThe original score by Jerry Goldsmith, by far. All I ever had was the old LP. I just got the 2 disc set from Intrada and it is unbelievable. As far as I can tell this 2 disc set has pretty much every cue that was used in the film plus all the music from the LP that wasn't in the film as well as some alternate takes. I'd encourage any fan of Alien & film soundtracks to pick up this set. Intrada's site is here.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 3:10 PMI remember using the very end of James Horner's "Countdown" piece from ALIENS as background music for the "Outgoing Greeting" on my home answering machine (remember THOSE?) once...
"Thank you for calling. You now have 10 seconds..."
It's from the sequence where the drop ship escapes right ahead of the "cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska."
Jeez, you kids sure take me back!

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 3:25 PMAs to the question... if I have to pick just ONE, it'd be ALIEN.
ALIEN - for all those gothic chords.
ALIENS - Gotta love Horner's snare drums in there ratchetting up the tension.
ALIEN 3 - Gut wrenching at times and sensitive, almost sweet, in others.
(Interrupting the 20th Century Fox theme was a nice touch right up front!)
Resurection - Was too distracted by bad dialog through most of the movie, but I do recall some triumphant orchestral flouirishes seeming badly out of place.
AVP - unremarkable
AVPR - Even more forgetable.
Predators 1 & 2 - Awesome use of tribal sounding percussion as the pred's theme, but also liked how Silvestri mixed it with orchestral in End credits of P2. Noticed this piece used in Discovery Channel (I think?) documentary on black holes once - very cool. Plus I thought, how many other fools aere going to recognize theme music from Predator 2? Got a good laugh out of that one.

MemberOvomorphMar-14-2012 3:20 PMMy favorite is Jerry Goldsmith's. I can just never get over the soundtrack during the cryo wake-up and when they are landing on the planetoid. Beautiful.

MemberOvomorphMar-15-2012 12:08 AMThe 2007 release of Jerry Goldsmith's complete and original score to Alien as conducted by Lionel Newman. The first disc is the original score while the second disc is the original 1979 soundtrack and what we heard in theatres. Coming in a close second for me is Elliot Goldenthal's score for Alien 3. Took me so long to find a copy of that and when I did I had to get it used because the only new copy cost three hundred dollars. It has a very unique sound and the Agnus Dei, Lullaby Elgey, and the Adagio are some of the best pieces of music from the sequels. Coming in third I would have to say the score to Alien Ressurection. I'm sure it's sacreligous to put this ahead of James Horner's score for Aliens, but when it comes down to it, John Frizzel's score is easier on the ears. It's very melodic and fits in much more with your classic film scores which in the music of the Alien movies is something special in itself.
Coming in fourth is James Horner's score to Aliens. I do love this score, but it works so much better in conjunction with the film. On its own it loses something. Plus it doesn't quite feel as unique as the other scores as I can hear strain of his scores for Star Trek II and Star Trek III which where made in the years surrounding Aliens if I remeber right. The Aliens score is unique and rather avant garde, but for my own part when ranking the scores of the four movies I would have to put it in last.
All of the scores for these movies are exceptional if you ask me and make most other film music pale in comparison.
