THE ALIEN UNIVERSE TIMELINE Link to Timeline: http://time.absoluteavp.com/ Welcome to the most expansive timeline of the Alien films available. It is based on the four 20th Century Fox films: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection, their respective novelisations, and film production information from a variety of sources. It also includes some references from the Colonial Marines Technical Manual by Lee Brimmicombe-Wood. The events concerning the Nostromo's landing on LV-426 take place in the period 2063-2123. The events concerning the infestation and subsequent destruction of Hadley's Hope and the Alien infestation of Fiorina 161 take place in the period 2127-2179. The events surrounding the destruction of the USM Auriga occur in the period 2325-2381. The Vehicles and Planets section contains information about the starships, ground vehicles, LV-426 and Fiorina 161. Year 2069 - 2123 Mid – Late 21st Century Faster-Than-Light (FTL) technology is discovered and the human race expands into deep space. Space traffic control station established in Antarctica. Android technology developed by Hyperdyne Systems. Estimated from evidence in Alien. ‘Hyperdyne’ from Aliens. 2069 (July 13) S.E. Brett (ID# 724/R4-06J) is born in Houston, Texas, UA. 2076 United States of America celebrates it's Tricentennial and issues a special commemorative patch to active members of it's Space Fleet (military and commercial). 2076 (February 27) A.J. Dallas (ID# 032/V4-07C) is born in Wolf Point, Montana, UA. 2080 (February 4) J.T. Parker (ID# 313/S4-08M) is born in San Diego, California, UA. 2083 (April 20) G.W. 'Thomas' Kane (ID# 825/G9-01K) is born in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, UK/EU. 2085 (June 21) Brett starts working as a mechanic for the family business E-Z-Fly Spacecraft Repair in Houston. Estimated from evidence in Alien. 2100 (March 11) Dallas is assigned to the salvage vessel USCSS Snark as pilot/ navigator. From Alien DVD. 2100 (May 23) Kane graduates with honours from Weatherly Private School From Alien DVD. 2101 The National Security Act establishes the Colonial Marine Corp. From Aliens : Colonial Marines Technical Manual Circa 2101 M-Class Starcruiser Nostromo (180924609) constructed. Estimated that Nostromo was about 20 years old in Alien (2122). The registration number is given on a computer screen and later by Ripley when she hails traffic control as 180924609, but crew patches give a registration of 180286. This is further confused by the number written on the outer hull near the bridge which is 180246. 180246 was given as the Nostromo's registration number in David Giler and Walter Hill's shooting script. These numbers could all be unrelated, but their similarity points to errors with the Brandywine continuity department. 2103 (January 23) Dallas is assigned to UTX Ganymede as pilot. From Alien DVD. 2104 The Northern, Central, and Southern American continents consolidate their economic might to form one nation known as The United Americas. From Nostromo crew patch that read 'Flag of the United Americas - 2104 to Present'. Also sourced from 'The Authorised Portfolio of Crew Insignias from The UNITED STATES COMMERCIAL SPACESHIP NOSTROMO: Concepts and Derivations' (Thinking Cap Company 1980). This may contradict the fact that the Nostromo prefix is USCSS (United States Commerical Star Ship) and the Colonial Marines are known as the USCMC (United States Colonial Marine Corps). It's probable that Americans simply referred to the 'UA' as 'US' due to habit. Also, I consider the terms 'spaceship' and 'star ship' interchangeable (the Nostromo can be either, as well a being a 'towing vehicle') 2104 (May 30) Kane graduates from Gunning Foss Military School at the top of his class. From Alien DVD. 2104 (October 6) After working for Speedy Maxx High Speed Terrafoil Racing team for four years, Parker quits due to a salary dispute. From Alien DVD. 2105 (January 9) Parker is recruited into the United Americas Outer Rim Defense Fleet as a mechanic (rank: Private). From Alien DVD. 2106 - 2108 Torin Prime Civil War occurs in Outer Rim Territories. Lieutenant Dallas serves in United Americas Outer Rim Defense Fleet (UAORD) as a pilot on UAS Leviathan (out of Liberty Echo)and receives Sunburst Medal of Honor. Parker is captured by J'har Rebels during the conflict and imprisoned at Concentration Camp GR-161 (1/8/07). He escapes during the liberation of Torin Prime by constructing an EEV out of scrap (21/2/08). Following the liberation Dallas is promoted to Captain, and Parker receives an honourable discharge and returns to Earth. From Alien DVD. 2108 (February 13) Kane is expelled from Bryce-Watkins Medical School for substance abuse, and subsequently successfully treated for drug-induced embolism and stress. From Alien DVD. 2120 (January 5) Kane and Lambert are assigned to the USCSS Nostromo as Executive Officer and Navigator respectively. From Alien DVD. 2120 (January 7) USCSS Nostromo leaves the Solomons bound for Thedus. Estimate based on information from Alien and guess work. When the crew were woken they were about half way home, and it was a 10 month trip from LV-426 to Earth. However they were detoured (estimating the detour to LV-426 sent them several months out of their way). Therefore we have a 32 month trip from Earth to Thedus return (approx. 16 months each way). 2120 (August 10) Ellen Ripley joins crew of USCSS Nostromo en route to Thedus, as Warrant Officer. From Alien DVD. 2120 (September 10) Parker and Brett join the crew of the USCSS Nostromo en route to Thedus, as Engineer and Engineering Tech respectively. From Alien DVD. 2121 (April 2) Harold Andrews is born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, UK/EU. 2121 (April) USCSS Nostromo arrives at Thedus and commences cargo loading. 2121 (June 12) USCSS Nostromo leaves Thedus with 20,000,000 tonnes of mineral ore, bound for Earth. Her science officer is replaced with Ash (ID# 111/C2/01X). From Alien. Date is from Alien DVD. 2122 (June 3 - June 6) USCSS Nostromo encounters what is assumed to be a distress signal emanating from the planetoid designated LV-426, in the Zeta-2-Reticuli system. Captain Dallas, Executive Officer Kane, and Navigator Lambert investigate a derelict spacecraft that contains the fossilised remains of an unknown alien species, and thousands of Xenomorph eggs. One of the xenomorph spore (‘facehugger’) attaches itself to Kane’s face and plants an embryo in his throat, which then hatches, killing the host. The hatchling (‘chestburster’) grows to over 7 feet tall and kills Dallas and Engineer’s Mate Brett. Warrant Officer Ripley discovers that Weyland-Yutani want the Alien specimen and the crew of the Nostromo are expendable. It is revealed Science Officer Ash is in fact a Hyperdyne Systems 120-A/2 android, who has been protecting the Alien. Chief Engineer Parker renders Ash inoperative when Ash attacks Ripley. Parker and Lambert are killed by the Alien whilst evacuating the Nostromo. Ripley rigs the ship to self-destruct and escapes on the shuttlecraft Narcissus with the ship’s cat Mr Jones. The Alien also escapes on the shuttle, but Ripley manages to blow it out of the airlock, effectively killing it. From Alien. From Alien. 2123 USCSS Nostromo is declared missing. Estimate only. Year 2127 - 2179 2127 (May 5) Michael Bishop is born in New York, New York, UA. 2128 (October 10) Johnathan Clemens is born in Redditch, Worchestershire, UK/EU. 2137 (September 2) Al Apone is born in Detroit, Michigan, UA. 2138 (January 30) Leonard Dillon is born in Baltimore, Maryland, UA. 2142 S. Gorman is born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada-UA. Mid 22nd Century Vast advances are made with starship travel and FTL technology. Advances made in the area of artifical intelligence. Gateway Station is constructed in orbit around Earth. Shuttlecraft Narcissus drifts un-noticed through the Core Systems. Volcanic activity on LV-426 damages and partially buries the derelict spacecraft previously investigated by the USCSS Nostromo. The 'distress' signal the Nostromo were investigating is shut off. It is later theorised by Ellen Ripley that IQ’s dropped sharply during this period. From Aliens (film & novel). Trip to LV-426 took the Sulaco only 3 weeks, as opposed to the 10 months it would have taken the Nostromo. Bishop says androids have behavioural inhibitors, and the old A/2 models were a bit twitchy. Ripley didn’t recognise Gateway Station. In the Aliens Special Edition the derelict has been damaged and partly buried under a lava flow, when it's discovered by the Jorden family. James Cameron has said it was due volcanic activity. (Starlog #121) 2144 Russ Jorden is born in Burbank, California, UA. 2145 (July 25) Mark Drake (A23/TQ2.0.47619E7) is born in Austin, Texas, UA. 2146 Ann Jorden is born. This is a complete guess, the only basis of which is that I know of lots of married couples where the husband is about 2 years older than the wife. 2149 (May 17) William Hudson (A08/TQ1.0.41776E3) is born in Fort Worth, Texas, UA. 2150 (March 30) Carter J. Burke is born in New York, New York, UA. 2151 Timothy Crowe is born. 2151 (July 31) Dwayne Hicks (A27/TQ4.0.48215E9) is born in Alliston, Alabama, UA. 2152 (April 25) Daniel Spunkmeyer (A23/TQ6.0.92810E7) is born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada-UA. 2153 Jeanette Vasquez (A03/TQ.0.15618E4) is born in Los Angeles, California, UA. 2157 Hadley’s Hope terraforming colony established on LV-426 aka Acheron. There is no sign of any signal from the derelict investigated by the Nostromo 35 years earlier. From Aliens. Van Leuwan said the colony had been there for over 20 years, so I've taken a guess and made 'over 20' equal 22. 2165 The Colonial Marine Corp reaches a peak 240,000 personnel at the end of the Tientsin campaign. From Aliens : Colonial Marines Technical Manual 2168 Eleven people die following a fuel station explosion, when Doctor Johnathan Clemens prescribes the wrong dosage of pain killer. He is found have had impaired judgement (from alcohol and a Morphine addiction) and is sentenced to 7 years in prison on Fiorina 161 and is reduced to a class 3-C medical practitioner. Based around the length of Clemens sentence, when Dillon found religion and when Weyland Yutani wanted to shut Fiorina 161 down. Interesting to note that Clemens didn't begin his medical studies till he was into his thirties. 2169 (August) William Hudson enlists in the USCMC. In the Aliens novel Hudson gripes that his ten year tour was due to finish in four weeks. Circa 2169 Conestoga Class starship USS Sulaco is constructed. Estimating the Sulaco is about 10 years old during Aliens (2179). Class of ship taken from Colonial Marines Technical Manual. 2171 Timothy Jorden born. Estimating Timmy is about 2 years older than Newt. 2173 Rebecca ‘Newt’ Jorden born. Newt was 6 years old in Aliens (2179). 2175 Weyland Yutani scales down it's work correctional facility on Fiorina 161, and reduces it to a custodial staff of 25. Johnathan Clemens finishes his sentence and stays as medical officer. Clemens says Dillon and the Brothers found religion about 5 years before Aliens (2179). Assumes that Weyland Yutani wanted to shut the installation down about a year after. Also assumes that Clemens completed his sentence around the time Weyland Yutani wanted to close the facility down. 2177 (December 23) Amanda Ripley-McClaren dies of cancer. From Aliens. The date 'Deceased 12/23/xx' is given on the photo of Amanda that Burke gives to Ripley. The year is very difficult to make out, but as Aliens is set in 2179 and Amy died 2 years before, we already have the year. 2179 (Circa May 16) Shuttlecraft Narcissus is discovered by a deep salvage team, and Ellen Ripley and Mr Jones the Cat are rescued (setting the record for the longest ever hypersleep). 2179 (June 8) Ripley arrives at Gateway and is placed into hospital, where she later learns what has happened. 2179 (June 12) Ripley is discharged from hospital. At a board of enquiry, Ripley’s stories about the Alien are widely ignored. She has her flight status revoked, and takes up residence aboard Gateway Station, working with powerloaders in the loading docks. Following the enquiry, Carter Burke provides Hadley’s Hope with the co-ordinates to the derelict spacecraft on Acheron. From Aliens 2179 (June 19) Russ and Ann Jorden are sent investigate a set of grid co-ordinates provided by Carter Burke, beyond the Ilium Range on LV-426, with their children, Timmy and Newt. From Aliens. One week for transmission to reach LV-426. 2179 (June 21) The Jorden family discovers the derelict with their children. Russ is attacked by a facehugger and impregnated with an Alien embryo. He is taken back to Hadley’s Hope. From Aliens. Simpson and Lydecker talk about sending the Jorden's out Burke's co-ordinates a couple of days earlier. 2179 (July 3) Colonial Administration loses contact with the colony. This assumes Burke followed up his original transmission a week later, then received no reply (2 week message turnaround Gateway - LV-426 - Gateway). 2179 (July 6) Ripley reluctantly agrees to accompany Burke and a Colonial Marine squad of 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment to Acheron to investigate on board the USS Sulaco. Assumes Burke was able to russle up a marine squad and convince Ripley inside 3 days. Also take Gormans line "Sorry we didn't have time to brief you people before we left Gateway." Suggests the whole thing happened pretty quickly. 2179 (July 26) The last pockets of resistance at Hadley's Hope are over-run by the Aliens. There was at least one 'intact' human discovered by Dietrich, which suggests that she was only impgregnated within the last 24 hours. 2179 (July 27) The USS Sulaco arrives at LV-426. 2179 (July 27 - approx 0900) The marines dropship departs the Sulaco Gorman said he wanted DCS ranging and tactical database assimilation by 0830, and dropship prep had 7 hours. I'm assuming half the squad worked on one and half on the other, and therefore left the ship about half an hour after 0830. 2179 (July 27 - Mission Time Index 0:50:00) The dropship lands and the marines investigate Hadley's Hope. One survivor, Newt, is discovered. The colonists PDT's (Personal Data Transmitters) are discovered in the Atmosphere Processor. 2179 (July 27 - Mission Time Index 5:19:00) The colonists are discovered, all dead bar one, inside the Atmosphere Processing station. Corporal Dietrich finds a live colonist, who is quickly killed when her chestburster hatches. 2179 (July 27 - Mission Time Index 5:33:00) The marines are attacked by the Aliens. Corporal Dietrich, Private Frost, Private Crowe, Private Wierzbowski, Master Sergeant Apone, and Private Drake are all killed or captured during the assualt. Ripley, and Newt, along with Lieutenant Gorman, Corporal Hicks, PFC Hudson, and PFC Vasquez elect to take off and nuke the entire colony from orbit, despite Burke's protests. However drop-ship pilots, Corporal Ferro and PFC Spunkmeyer are killed by an Alien, and the drop-ship crashes. The survivors join android/ synthetic/ artifical person Executive Officer L Bishop back at the main colony, and seal themselves in against the Aliens. 2179 (July 28 - T-Minus 4 hours to Atmosphere Processor explosion) As the Atmosphere Processing station is about to go critical (due to either Alien interference, smart-gun damage, or the drop-ship crash), the survivors on Acheron decide to get Bishop to remote pilot the second drop-ship down to Acheron in order to escape. Meanwhile Burke tries to get Alien specimens back to Earth by attempting to impregnate Ripley and Newt. They are saved, and as Burke is about to be executed by Hicks, the Aliens attack. 2179 (July 28 - T-Minus 42 minutes) Newt leads Ripley, Hicks, Vasquez and Gorman through the colony airducts, after Hudson and Burke are lost in the inital Alien assault. Vasquez and Gorman are killed during the evacuation, Newt is captured and Hicks is critically wounded, but makes it to the landing field with Ripley's help. 2179 (July 28 - T-Minus 26 minutes) The second dropship from the Sulaco touches down. Ripley informs Bishop they aren't leaving. 2179 (July 28 - T-Minus 15 minutes) Ripley heads back into the disintegrating processing station, rescues Newt and encounters the Alien Queen. 2179 (July 28 - T-Minus 2 minutes) Ripley and Newt get back to the drop-ship and escape, only seconds before the station explodes. 2179 (July 28) The Alien Queen (along with an egg) stows away on the drop-ship and attacks the group when they arrive back on the Sulaco. Bishop is torn in half. Ripley manages to battle the Queen hand-to-hand using a powerloader and blows the Queen out of the airlock. From Aliens. Dates are estimates based around the fact that Burke told Hadley’s Hope admin to go looking for the derelict on ‘6/12/79’ (12 June 2179). The shot of Earth from Gateway shows a northern hemisphere summer (working backwards from there tells us about when Ripley was found - counting around 3 weeks to get back to Earth). It takes 3 weeks for the Sulaco to get to LV-426. The explosion of the atmosphere processing station and/ or further adverse geological conditions render the derelict spacecraft on LV-426 not viable for collection of Alien specimens. Alien Resurrection has Dr Gediman lamenting the destruction of the Derelict. On top of this, if the Derelict was still intact, Weyland-Yutani would have gone straight to LV-426 rather than going to Fiorina 161, and the USM wouldn't have needed to clone Ripley. It's also been theorised that Ripley could have nuked the Derelict from the Sulaco. Either way it ain't there anymore despite what the Colonial Marines Tech Manual or Aliens vs Predator PC game would have us believe. 2179 (August 8) The egg left by the Alien Queen on the USS Sulaco, hatches and impregnates Ripley while she is in hypersleep. Some of the facehugger’s acid blood causes a fire, and the Sulaco’s main computer evacuates the ship. The hypersleep chambers of Ripley, Newt, Hicks, and Bishop are put on board Emergency Evacuation Vehicle (EEV) unit 2650. 2179 (August 9 - 0600) Which later crashes on Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161, an outer veil mineral ore refinery and mens maximum security correctional facility. Hicks and Newt are killed in the crash and Bishop is rendered inoperative. Superintendant Harold Andrews requests Weyland-Yutani immediately evacuate Ripley. Meanwhile the facehugger on the EEV impregnates, Spike, a dog belonging to Prisoner Thomas Murphy. 2179 (August 9 - 2100) Newt and Hicks' bodies are cremated in the furnace. During the ceremony, an Alien hatches from Spike. 2179 (August 10-12) Meanwhile the facehugger on the EEV impregnates one of the prisoners dogs, and later hatches. The Alien attacks Prisoner Murphy who falls into a giant fan and is killed. It later attacks Prisoners Boggs and Rains, while Prisoner Golic escapes. Ripley reactivates Bishop who accesses the Sulaco’s flight recorder and tells her that the Alien was on board the Sulaco and is now on Fiorina. Shortly after, Medical Officer Johnathan Clemens is killed by the Alien. Before Ripley can alert Andrews, he is also taken by the Alien. A number of prisoners are killed in a fire while attempting to trap the Alien. It is revealed that Ripley has an Alien Queen inside of her. The next attempt to kill the Alien results in all the remaining prisoners deaths, apart from Prisoners Robert Morse and Leonard Dillon. Dillon is killed when he lures the Alien into the refinery’s lead works. Prisoner Morse dumps hot lead on the Alien, from which it escapes. Ripley turns the sprinklers on it, shattering the molten Alien into pieces. Michael Bishop, the human prototype for the Bishop model androids, arrives on the starship Patna at Fiorina just in time to see Ripley throw herself into the refinery’s furnace in order to stop Weyland-Yutani getting their hands on an Alien specimen. Warder Francis Aaron is shot when he attacks Bishop. Genetic samples of Ripley are collected. The Fiorina 161 facility is closed down and the sole survivor, Prisoner Morse is re-assigned. The Sulaco would’ve been about a third to half way (one week to a week and a half) home when the EEV was ejected and eventually ended up on Fiorina 161, and Andrews said the rescue ship would arrive with a week. A date of July 6 is given in the Alien 3 novelisation and shooting script, but wasn't in the film and has been left off here as it doesn't correlate with the dates in Aliens. Of course it’s possible that the EEV was in space for about a year before it crashed, but the film doesn’t give us this impression, and it is therefore highly unlikely. It's also been theorised that Alien 3 takes place in 2185. Click here to find out why it doesn't. Late 22nd Century Prisoner Morse writes an account of the events on Fiorina 161, telling how Ellen Ripley sacrificed her own life to protect us from the beast. Morse’s story is subsequently banned. The Autons rebel, a re-call is issued and only a few escape the ensuing massacre. Approx. 2377 The crew of the pirate craft Betty consisting of Captain Frank Elgyn, Sabra Hillard, Johner, Christie, and John Vriess run into trouble on the planet Kawlang. Vriess is crippled when shrapnel pierces his spinal column. After they escape Vriess is confined to a motorised wheelchair. From Alien : Resurrection (novel). Estimating from the look of Vriess’ chair and how adept he is at handling it. 2379 Doctors Jonathan Gediman, Carlyn Williamson, Matt Kinloch, Yoshi Watanabe, Brian Clauss, Dan Sprague are assigned to the top secret medical research vessel USM Auriga along with graduate Trish Fontaine. Estimating that Call hadn’t been on the Betty for very long. 2380 (March) Vincent Distephano is assigned to the USM Auriga From Alien : Resurrection (novel). Distephano was 10 months into his 12 month tour during the events in Alien Resurrection. 2380 (December) A transport carrying workers to the planet Xarem is intercepted by the Betty. The passengers are taken hostage. 2380 (December 31) Doctors Wren and Gediman aboard the USM Auriga, stationed just beyond Pluto’s orbit and commanded by General Perez, successfully create a clone of Ellen Ripley on the eighth attempt. The Alien Queen inside her is removed, but some of their DNA mixes during the cloning process. 2381 (January 3) Ripley #8 attacks Dr Wren during a routine medical examination. 2381 (January 4) The Betty docks with the Auriga and unloads it’s cargo. The abducted passengers are impregnated with Alien embryos which hatch shortly after. 2381 (January 6 - T-minus 3 hours to Earth dock) The full grown Aliens escape and run amock through the ship, killing or capturing most of the crew, including General Perez. Ripley along with Dr Wren, Private Vincent Distephano and the crew of the Betty attempt to escape from the Auriga which is autopiloting back to Earth. During the escape, Elgyn, Christie, and Hillard are killed or captured. They encounter Ripley’s seven previous clones which Ripley destroys, and one impregnated survivor from the Xarem transport named Larry Purvis. Wren turns on the group and shoots Call, making his own way to the Betty. 2381 (January 6 - T-minus 90 (42) minutes to Earth dock) It is revealed that Call is an Auton. Call accesses ‘Father’ (the Auriga’s computer) and adjusts it’s flight path so it will crash, rather than land on Earth, and speeds the ship up (thereby speeding up the ships flight time to 42 minutes). Ripley is captured by the Aliens, while Call, Johner, Vriess, Distephano and Purvis make it to the Betty. However Wren has beaten them already and threatens to kill Call unless she resets the Auriga’s flight path. As Purvis’ embryo begins to emerge, he fights Wren, placing Wren’s head over his chest. The embryo hatches killing Purvis and Wren. Distephano, Johner, and Call kill the chestburster. Meanwhile, Ripley witnesses the birth of the Newborn, an Alien/ Human hybrid. The Newborn kills the Alien Queen, then comes after Ripley. Ripley races back to the Betty and boards, just as is takes off. 2381 (January 6 - 4:00am UT) The Betty escapes as the Auriga crashes into southern Africa and explodes at approximately 6:00am local time. However the Newborn is on board the Betty, and it kills Distephano, then goes after Call. Ripley manages to tame it momentarily, while flinging some of her own acidic blood on a porthole. The porthole disintegrates and the Newborn is sucked out. The Betty enters Earth’s atmosphere and evenutally lands in ship graveyard near Montmatre in Paris. Ripley and Call contemplate their next move. From Alien : Resurrection. In the film Call said that Ellen Ripley had been dead for 200 years (she said 'over 200' in the novel). I orginally estimated that 200 could possibly be anything from 200 - 220 years, and therefore took a guess and placed Alien : Resurrection in 2389 (210 years after the events in Alien 3). However, whilst doing a bit more research, I found out (via The Solar System Simulator) that Pluto, Jupiter, and Earth are very close to being in alignment in January 2381. Being an emergency, the Auriga would have taken the shortest route back to Earth (ie. a straight line). This straight line took it past Jupiter. Therefore Alien : Resurrection takes place 202 years after the events in Alien 3. The date was futher refined by the phase of the moon visible in the Auriga's approach to Earth.
