The HEAD - why in bondage

Are these just there to keep the thing from falling apart over the millennia? Or is there a deeper meaning? Are they there to show that humanoids are in some state of bondage? It's an interesting design choice any way you look at it..

I think it ties in with the myth of Prometheus himself, chained to a rock with his liver eaten every day by an eagle.....ad infinitum........ Which is WHY I think that the Space Jockey race is in servitude to another race of beings that we STILL have not either seen or even been given the SLIGHTEST clue to............. :-D

I have a feeling the cables may be a remnant of when the statue was moved into place. I mean we have no idea how or when it was moved there or even who did it. Perhaps it was ancient humans in an effort to worship the alien gods.... something about it feels very Egyptian.

lol thats not bondage...maybe its customary space jockey head dess..the blue man in the space jockey chamber also has somthing on the bridge of his nose..who knows what that does

The bondage idea is not that outlandish.... if only in a subversive way. Remember the art of Gieger.... full of crazy sado-masc stuff.

- the 'cables" extend all the way down to the chin, not just bridge of the nose
- studying a hi-res pic of the blue dude shows no such thing
I haven't thought of the SJ subversive to a "higher" alien though. Like that.
maybe it's nothing. I just thought it added something interesting to the image

Who wants to bet me 10 bucks about that "other being" idea? :-P

There is much symbolism in the head. Some of which is Egyptian. Some of which is related to the concept of Prometheus.
Prometheus made man from clay. Remember a book called 'Frankenstein: or The New Prometheus' ? Read this post then ask yourself 'why put a crack in the exact same place'....
Ridley Scott is genius at combining several deep themes ... I'm still working on the meaning of the nose bars though...
March 14, 2012
heh- I'll bite Cypher. I'll paypal you 10 bucks if there is no other being higher than the Jockeys running the show. might as well make this interesting.
::edit MORE interesting ;)

... to enunciate a bad feeling that I have with it all th time: I do not hope the whole structure inside the derelict ship(s?) turns out to be a maze just like in AvP- I mean without any alien staff on it. Then it'd be another ghost galleon story with lots of hidden traps; not at least those ampules which obviously have a certain appeal to prometheus crew...
another idea of mine is that scaffold is ought to keep away that guy from... the ampules; dry spells, sorry lean spells in space could seduce him otherwise...

@Nephilim_LV426:
excellent catch - the crack down the forehead has been bothering me as well.
That's a great juxtaposition between FStein and the head.

Ahhhh I think thats the other way round @Jim100a100, if there isn't a higher being I'll pay YOU 10 bucks, cause I reckon there will be something the Space Jockeys answer to....... But I'm almost 100 per cent certain I'll be right ;-) ALMOST......GAME ON! :-D

ah, you're correct, I say no SJ higher beings...you say yes.
My thinking is that it would only make things more complicated.
Only...85 more days left!

how do you know those wires dont serve a function like when they are in the space jockey suits
March 14, 2012
@Vanilla-Hollywood, when in AvP (either of them) was there a derelict like in Alien??? Are you talking about the Predator ship?

... speaking of suits... I hope that in the film the space suits come off as a bit less saturation and action figure like... does anyone else think they just look too perfect in some of the stills. The original film just had this grittiness that made so much more believable... even the crew looked kind of greasy and blue collar...

But remember mogy79, this is a scientific expedition. I'd expect the equipment to be better quality.

March 15, 2012
@ cypher: of course not. I meant the show jumping course in that predator built pyramid-temple below icy ground.
But does that make any difference? As ever they'll be chasing thru pitch-black corridors just to find them confronted defencelessly with superior combatants.
March 15, 2012
Perhaps we've already been given this answer? The engineer(space jockey) and the elder engineer(see space jockey). Maybe they also do some "mutating" as they age like we've seen with the Mohawk man perhaps? It could be some sort of metamorphosis, they get some more biomechanical gear for their bodies (the lines on the face) and maybe they grow in size or just get chubby? (the statues chin and cheeks)

I try to avoid the AvP shite as much as possible Vanilla-Hollywood ;-)

Good take mogy79
Of what we have seen so far, the "used universe" concept from Alien is lost in Prometheus _ everything is new, shining and glossy (at the human side of course).
This is inevitable, since in this story Prometheus is a ship and crew specifically tailored for whatever mission they were comissioned to, while the Nostromo guys were "space truckers" doing other things when they were drafted to become alien food.
