Yes I think David is evil...here's my thoughts
"How far would you go to get your answers, What would you be willing to do?" - David Is evil

RuthMarch 24, 2012
I don't really think David is pure evil. He may have good purposes, but his actions might end very bad. He neither will be Ash or Bishop, I think David could between them, in the middle.
I like the idea of reading dreams or memories or whatsoever. But I believe if he's reading that, he's doing it just because he can, not because he needs to do something bad for them.

ZetaReticuliMarch 24, 2012
To steer away from the 'good android after all' thing would be
refreshing, but I'll not build up my hopes, lol. I like the idea of him
stalking the ship while the rest of the crew spend years in hypersleep -
like a sort of sentinel - very eerie.

KronikMarch 24, 2012
I don't think the Cryo-Tube David is messing around with is Shaw's - That Tube seems to be in a smaller room than the one's we saw in an earlier trailer, where there were several lined up in a much larger room... My guess is that it's Weyland's, which has been kept away form all the others.

FrantzMarch 24, 2012
He he very interesting idea Biomechanic ...can be also that she is already pregnant and unaware of it ? and David sense this before everyone else ?
AshmodeanMarch 24, 2012
I don't think David is pure evil. I think hes just programmed. When I watch the scene in Alien where Ash is about to kill Ripley he almost looks sad about it or like it's something he doesn't get a "say" over. I am thinking we will see an internal struggle in David to overcome the constraints of his creators just like the rest of the crew. I think if he is reading their dreams it's because dreaming is something he just can't do.

i bet he either wants to terminate us or assimilate us.... tee hehehe.

Spacejockey18March 24, 2012
I just hope the rumors aren't true saying david will become the space jockey that would suck but nice find i bet he is reading her dreams kind of creepy

SimonMarch 24, 2012
Reading dreams and minds? I think that is too sci-fi and wouldn't it be mentioned as one of the patents or discoverys?

SimonMarch 24, 2012
Yeah okay. It does look like they can read minds in some sence ... I don't like that :(
And I never thought that you would dream in a cryosleep. Actually it doesn't make sence unless you have a soul.
Alien DroneMarch 24, 2012
Remember how Newt asked Ripley about dreaming in hypersleep. Maybe this is the end of the movie and someone, the survivor perhaps is in hypersleep and we have David being able to experience those dreams somehow.

arcaneradioMarch 24, 2012
Maybe monitoring dreams is something that is a medical requirement of hypersleep. In the alien book it was mentioned that those in hypersleep still dream. Maybe he makes sure they don't have nightmares so as to prevent psychological trauma. Can you imagine having a nightmare for a year straight? you'd wake up pretty messed up.

FamishedMarch 25, 2012
I'd say that if something like what you propose is happening here, it could very well be that David8 could be longing for a genuine past, or genuine dreams. Anything that is in the realm of understanding or experiencing being human. For David8, his agenda within the evolution theme, may very well be to become more human.
Machines evolving into flesh, flesh evolving to machine--pretty much my take on the film. Creation and destruction working both ways. Birth through death, in very general terms.
Of course, it's also very possible that these shots of David8 are simply part of a medical examination ---very likely. I'd like to know what he sees
Or, they are harmless shots of David8 monitoring the crew. made to look ominous through edits and juxtaposition.

Had to comment here after all this time because today I noticed something about the Cryo-Pod scene in the extended trailer that tells me your theory is spot on. At about 1:05 into the trailer, David is hovering over Shaw's Pod, visor on, Neurolink establised etc. BUT you also hear what I think is Shaw screaming, flashback-style, like she is having a nightmare and David is watching. My god Biomechanic, I think you are right about him viewing her dreams/nightmares. O_O

@Biomechanic: Excellent find and a great conclusion you came up with, I like it a lot! Damn, I was just about to start my own thread about that topic, but a search then lead me to yours. So I just add my thoughts and some hopefully interesting news to it here...
It looks like David has indeed logged himself into Shaw's dreams and I think it's safe to say that he's got a certain admiration for her or for what he sees. Is this improbable or even inappropriate? Hard to tell or judge before we've seen the movie. This scene must be quite at the start, before they wake up and it describes what David does to beat time in his more than 2 years of loneliness.
I have based my thoughts on the following: David is wearing his VR helmet (more about that below) and in the picture of Shaw's Cyro Pod display it says 'Neuro-Visor link ESTABLISHED'. Now for the strange VR helmet:
There was a very brief leak on the Weyland Industries site last week, and it presented a different 'Electronics' page, of which one of the Unfiction.com guys luckily managed to copy the text before it was removed. This early 'leaked' Technology page was then replaced and those two tech items became the Holotab we can see there now. That text was pretty intriguing, this is what it said:
"VR HELMET
The VR helmet represents brand new technology designed to enhance the function of latest Weyland android, David 8. All new David 8 models will be VR-compatible. The helmet taps into David 8’s expanded neural network and translates human thought, dreams or unconscious experience into images. The VR helmet senses the brain activity of a human subject, then enlists the high data processing rate of the David 8 to translate billions of synapse firings into visual data."
Here's the only 'proof' for this I can find now, as this is the source from where I followed the link myself. As the site looked 'unfinished' with missing links to pictures, I didn't pay too much attention either and didn't bother with a screengrab.
Anyway, I hope it helps to prove and to emphasize your point.

Or perhaps he's been ordered by his employers to read Shaw's/the crew's dreams.
I hope that Shaw isn't pregnant, at least not before her arrival. For one thing, it seems implausible that she'd pass the requisite pre-flight health screenings if she were pregnant. For another thing, if she were pregnant she'd have to be just barely pregnant - a few weeks, before signs show up - and that's just not interesting enough to bother with as a subplot, what with half of pregnancies being miscarried and the surviving half being a clump of cells. For a Shaw pregnancy to carry any drama, she'd have to be further along.

abiogenesisMay 02, 2012
*Sorry, brought up the possibility of Shaw's pregnancy in the wrong thread. (There's another thread out there about David reading her unborn child's dreams or something. Which is also ridiculous since embryos don't dream.)

RickKMay 02, 2012
I kinda dismissed this idea of reading dreams, until I got out the old Alien novel by Alan Dean Foster to read, and the first few pages included this very idea - actually it suggested that there were "professional dreamers" that were paid to allow people to watch their dreams for entertainment. So evidently this idea has been something Ridley's had for a while now.
At the very least it would eliminate the need for a traditional "flashback" scene in a pretty unique way.

Certainly Shaw wass not the only crew member's dreams that David tapped into..
David would not do this on his own..
IN a later post on this thread there is mention of David 'downloading into Shaw's dreams,,planting information...Maybe the VR is a two way strreet..and that could be very interesting,,
In the movie 'Dreamscape' a thread is that people can enter your dreams and actively be involved,,shape. your dreams,,
That maybe a little to far for this eklement of Prometheus..but still ...
I am sorry I missed this thread..when it was first posted..

@ Bio
Couldn't see your posts. Not sure why...
At the very end of Shaw's dream sequence, for just a moment, she sees David there (in the dream). It is at this moment, when David's presence in her dream is seemingly 'detected' that David breaks the link. Only saw the flick once, but remember being creeped out by what seemed almost like voyerism, or at the very least, a violation of her privacy.
Also, on an unrelated point, the ALIEN novelization does mention dreamers, including one whose dreams were of warm, fat mice hiding in dark places, a cute touch.
cheers,

Until the Behavioral inhibitors were integrated into bishops model I believe all AIs had questionable motives and remorseless drive toward whatever goals their programmers drove them toward without regard to preservation of human life.

@sukkal; Biomechanic posted that he thought David8, using the visor was in fact reading shaw's dreams. There were even images up and the neuro-visor link established was pointed out as proof he was reading her dreams. Which we now know was exactly what he was up to. It was an incredible post and so sad it is gone. :(

Thanks Svanya it was nothing really just figured that weird helmet had to do something creepy.
However while watching the movie for the first time I was kind of dissapointed I had thought of this among other things. The over analyzing I had done before the movie kind of hurt my enjoyment. I stayed away from most spoilers and stayed away from all sites when it premiered in UK but I allowed myself the trailers and TV spots thinking they were safe. Now I feel like everything was basically given away. Kept having a nagging "I think I know what's going to happen next" feeling.
Lesson learned I guess.

Androids don't sleep. Ergo, androids don't dream... do they?
Baa.
Certainly agree that pretty much all the meat of the film was given away. A sort of backwards marketing, creating a "nah there must be even more to this, amazing if so" mentality. When really it was Scotts "All about everything" way of doing it right there, in the preamble to the main event
