MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 2:16 AMHi all,
I'm wondering if the overall plot is about hubris (Hubris ( /ˈhjuːbrɪs/), also hybris, means extreme haughtiness, pride or arrogance. Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one's own competence or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power.)*e.g.;

Weyland claims "We are now the gods"
Humans go in search of their" creators", some wishing to learn, some wishing to profit
Humans find remains of a civilization ('Jocks) that also chose a path of manipulating natural processes, ending badly for them
'Jocks manipulate humans, which ends badly for them (humans)
Humans destroy remaining 'Jocks
Outcome = We have followed in our "creators" steps and are doomed to an equivalent fate

Any thoughts?

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 2:41 AMSounds awesome, and plausible. That still leaves the Alien as a wrongly genetically engineered creature turning against it's creator. I romanticize that the Alien is much more than that....far more evil, cunning, and otherworldly like nothing we can imagine or know. My fingers are crossed that the powers that be do not let Alien be some sidebar in this universe, a genetic freak gone wrong. They're way more than that

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 4:20 AMThanks, although I'm not sure I articulated the idea very well. I've read the alleged script draft leaks, and see some parallels between these & the trailers...
If the 'Jocks started terraforming a world and overlooked a fairly basic life form in the process (imagine some of the more basic parasitic life forms you might find on Earth), paused the process, spliced their DNA into these, only to find the outcome was an eight foot tall, acid for blood, parasite with bad breath & a bad attitude, and the rest is (future) history.
This seems to have parallels to Weyland's speech, where "we are now God", reflecting humanities own arrogance of our technological abilities outstripping our morality, with the wash up being a sad ending.

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 5:23 AMIt has been a major theme in the other Alien films so I wouldn't doubt it. Nice observation.

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 7:38 AMGood one. Definitely a theme that comes along with knowledge....

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 9:00 AMBased on what I have seen with the trailers and the TED speech, that is my guess.
I can't help but feel the movie title and plot are intertwined.

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 11:49 AMBased on the TED talk alone I would say there's a heavy dose of hubris in the backstory at least.

MemberOvomorphMar-25-2012 2:09 PMI would count on hubris being dominant theme.
Prometheus was a titan who stole the fire from Zeus and perhaps humanity thinks they can do the same to God/Creators and get away with it.
I am guessing we will find out that we shouldn't base our ambitions and actions on some old creation myth or ignore details of the story:
1)Prometheus was a Titan
Humans are small and puny...
2)Stealing the "Fire" from Zeus was probably difficult for a Titan to pull off
So it could be out of scope for a human....
3) In the end Prometheus was bound to rock for an Eagle to eat his liver every day only for it to regenerate overnight.
Are humans able to endure comparable suffering and still survive?
4) In the end I believe its Hercules (another demi God), who by extreme effort and suffering of his own, who saves Prometheus
If humanity can endure recurrent pain in suffering as in 3) will we be lucky enough to have an ally in the same mold as Hercules?

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 9:09 AMUnless "SpaceJockey" = Prometheus that gave "fire" to humans
No idea about hercules
