MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 6:36 AMThis might have been touched upon before, but it's none the less new to me. Ridley Scott originally planned a film version of Joe Haldeman's The Forever War to be his third Science Fiction movie. That never happened, but the return of the rights to Ridley in 2010 is supposed to be the thing that brought him back to the genre. I don't think there's any chance that Prometheus will be a direct adaption of Haldeman's book, but it might still keep some of it's themes. Anyone who has more information on this?
From Wikipedia:
"On October 12, 2008, Ridley Scott confirmed that after a 25 year wait for the rights to become available, he is making a return to science fiction with a film adaptation of the book.[12]
In March 2009, Scott confirmed that the film would be in 3D citing James Cameron's Avatar as an inspiration for doing so. "I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War. I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work,
and I've got to go 3D. It's going to be phenomenal.""

Is this really the first piece of concept art from Ridley Scott's movie of Joe Haldeman's The Forever War?
This piece of concept art comes to us from long-time movie illustrator Steve Simmons who has done art for a ton of movies including the upcoming Timeless and the Neil Marshall produced horror flick The Ghosts of Slaughterford.
I've put in some inquiries to see if this is indeed the first legit piece of concept art for Ridley Scott's in-development adaptation of the "Forever War" novel. Here's a synopsis of the film:
"An elite task force returns home after a brief interstellar military operation, but discovers that 20 years have past and the planet they once knew is completely different. Based on Joe Haldeman's 1974 novel "The Forever War". Based on Joe Haldeman's 1974 novel "The Forever War"."

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 7:36 AMThe Forever War is one of my favourite novels and I cant really see many similarities if any, with Prometheus.
Bar I suppose, time dilation and aliens but these are about as broad as themes get in sci-fi

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 8:15 AMI've been watching for news, any scrap of info on when Ridley Scott is going to film this....so far nothing but that's understandable given his focus right now is Prometheus.

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 12:46 PMAdapting that book is going to be messy. I also think it has box office failure written all over it.
That said, I would go if they didn't fuck with the source material too much.

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 9:05 PMAgreed Shane, it is a loser at the box office, break even at best in the home market...a long obsession in this story nursed by Scott for many many years. Probably will be perceived as an personal art/vanity project from Scott by many people.
I believe he'll do it, and do it right. He was going to do it long ago...it never got made....and now hes got it back on his desk. He gets the first crack at it.

MemberOvomorphMar-26-2012 9:11 PMWell he has his plate full with films he is supposed to be doing over the next few years . He has alredy been attached to a new film with fassbender in the lead role the Counselor after prometheus, then he hopes to make a blade runner sequel and he is not getting any younger. All i can say is he must drink red bull by the gallon .

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 3:57 AMSorry to say, I don't think Mr. Scott will ever get around to making Halderman's masterpiece in to a movie. It's a heavy going read with a lot of toing and froing by the lead character so I reckon the script will be a nightmare to nail.
The regular movie going public will have no idea about the background, nor the story behind it. The pre-release hype and the overlong trailers (show the entire film why don't you) are all they have to go by with a "Oh that looks good!" or "oh that looks shit!" assumption at the end of it.
I'd hate 'The Forever War' to go the same way as Frank Herberts 'DUNE'. Hacked to death by the film makers despite the excellent efforts of Director David Lynch keeping as close to the book as possible.
Sometimes books are best left to the imagination of the people who've read them. I just wish movie goers woud read more books!
