Two derelicts, or just one?

I'm torn between whether the derelict craft we see in Prometheus is the same one on LV-426, or its own ship. I read arguments for it being the same that are plausible. Yet, the ships do appear different as has been pointed out. Here is the head scratcher. Its been said that the 'Alien' derelict could be thousands of years old, that the SJ is fossilized or mummified. If this is the case, then why does its 'warning' signal get picked up by the Nostromo at that particular time. Why not 10 or 20 years earlier (I would go further back, but I'm taking into account the technology of human intergalactic travel)? This must tie the LV-426 ship to Prometheus. The company knew what to look for and when, which is why Ash was put on the Nostromo just before it launched. Yet, 'Alien' is suppose to take place 30 years after Prometheus. Now, it could still be a different vessel. Who's to say that the 'Alien' derelict wasn't carrying a bioweapon to another planet, not Earth like the derelict in Prometheus is implied to do. Which could mean that the events that take place in Prometheus (the film) continue after the credits roll. Ridley did mention a sequel, but said it would steer further away from 'Alien.' Ugh, my head is spinning.

If you watch the first Alien movie we are told that LV-426 is a volcanic planet which could explain the dramatic change of climate we see in the trailers. Also Prometheus takes place 80 years prior to Alien so a lot could have changed in the planet's atmosphere including the landscape.

YEAH I didn't really pay attention to what they said about the planet till I watched the directors cut last night. Rock, lava based.

I'm sure a good part of the Prometheus audience will be drawn in just because they recognize the 'derelict' ship from Alien. It is easy to assume that it's the same one, especially if Prometheus is going to the same planet. The differences in the floor design around the 'space jockey' chair in both 'Alien' & 'Prometheus' however point to the possiblility of a separate 'derelict' ship. It's a tough call, especially since in 'Alien' the derelict ship by that time had quite a xeno hive make-over on top of its original architecture.

I'm solidly in the different camp. Too many differences, visually. The interior of the ship in Prometheus is less organic looking, and looks cheap in comparison. No way would Ridley Scott let the kind of thing slide. And I don't believe in any theories about the ship transforming.

I agree with Biehn_Bandit.......too many glaringly obvious differences, when they could just as easily have made them indistinguishable.
