In some ways the cat is the ultimate land predator that adapted to wide range of environments. Smaller cats survived because their food supply did not die off like the saber tooth did.
Yet the cat became domesticated due to possibly our warm (fire), food, (and companionship?).
Will Humans be domesticated by Weyland/Aliens?
