MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 2:00 PMCertainly, all true followers of Alien, when faced with in the 1979 movie, would only dream of, but could never be prepared for the ultimate horror they would be experiencing after all...That was "all the money" for Alien. The deep, almost religious fear, awe and terror it would made all us fans feel...Something like this creature was totally true and we would all try to prove that such kind of a life form is plausible in nature and that is why we all found it so easy to get scared and even feel threatened by it even days or months from leaving the theater. I, for one, watched it in the delicate age of 12, and in a time when cinema experiences were rare..I remember falling in love with Helen Ripley (totally), and then trying to find out when the movie would stop showing, so that I can go to the cinema owner and beg him for a poster or a photo. Even by then I knew this would be impossible, since all portrayed photos and posters of the movie were part of the contract, they would all be given to the next cinema in another town for projection and so on....Man...it felt soooo real!
So now you know you are dealing with a true fan (yeiiiiiii), let me tell you one of the strong reasons why we all are waiting to watch Prometheus, apart from our undeniable right to get the answers on the whereabouts and the purpose in life of this creature.
We are all in, because we need to relive this ultimate terror, we want to attempt a rebirth through our baptism into this new, yet to be discovered terror offered by Prometheus. Certainly not the expected way to become a child again...But I still consider Sir Ridley Scott, as my spiritual father, he shaped my fantasy, my love for the ultimate in space, my evolution as an artist. I thank him so much for this. And the more I find out how many of you out there think of this like I do, with the same respect, awe and reverence, the so much happier I become, cause I would think of it mainly as one personal experience, that I wouldn't be able to share with others.
So to the point! Are there visceral things in Prometheus? Oh boy yes!I will only recite from the trailer: "It's moving? This thing is moving? Why is that?",
"Why is that door open?", "cut it off, cut it off", "somebody shoot, will somebody shoot?"," what the hell is going on down there?", "Kill everything, do you copy me?". And then only describe a few scenes: the tentacles of the squid before Shaw's face in the Pod...then when Shaw looks through the door window into some kind of lab and a pink tentacle hits the glass....people burning with flame throwers presumably all kind of nastiness creatures spread around everywhere... this hideous tentacle in the eye of a crew member, the famous pink animal that tries to pass through the suit of a crew member, this famous blue guy?...the deformed mohawk atacking the crew...and a bonus from me: when I played the extra slow motion posted, I believe I witnessed minute 28 of the movie, where Idris Elba becomes the first victim of a creature. Right there I think somebody is shooting, probably unsuccessfully, and then the camera turns to the right to show Idris in terror, and then when the camera zooms out a bit and starts turning to the left, the swiftly moving tentacles of some kind of creature become apparent...giving a sense of a creature about the half height of a human but certainly huge regarding the rests of its body.
Now don't get me wrong. It's not only for the visceral part. But maybe its the most fun part of the entire experience I expect to live. I trust sir Ridley Scott, will actually manage to reshape and refresh our sci-fi mentality. For whatever this is worth, he is the only one entitled to!

AdminPraetorianApr-14-2012 2:38 PMI just think the Aliens are so beautiful, I never was scared, not when I first saw it at age 7 (at home). I'm a weird girl I guess. I think they are pretty. I went to Gigers museum 2 years ago and I was happier than I ever was at Disney World. LOL!
I love the androids too.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 3:32 PM@Svanya: i'm with you on that, when i first saw ALIEN,
the grown alien, i was far more fascinated than i was afraid
Giger's work had be transfixed on the elegant design of it
don't gret me wrong, i'm more than certain if that creature
were real, and hunting me down, i'd be terrified, but from a film
observers point of view, i think it's one of the most sophisticated
looking film villains of all time

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 3:32 PM@Svanya I totally agree, I'm fascinated with Giger's work. So jealous you've been been to his museum. I recently watched the 'Giger revealed' documentary and after seeing the museum in it I mentioned to my girlfriend I'd like to go there.....she said you'll be going by yourself then lol she doesn't like is work (sigh)

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 3:52 PMEarlier today I was re-reading an excerpt from the Alien Vault and I read something which I had forgotten about:
'I always thought that the alien was interested in things other than itself', says Weaver. There was a scene that Ridley and I wanted to do where I was naked inside the closet and the alien came over and instead of attacking me, it was trying to touch my skin because I was so different from it.'
Again, Fox blanched at the nudity, and the moment was forbidden. (page 139)
Speaking of visceral... Scott is surely after something more than just some unearthly beings trying to kill everybody. Even if the alleged retaliation against a hypothetical Prometheus could be violent, or gruesome, the insights would be far more memorable.
Eye candy AND food for thought , these are my high hopes.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

AdminPraetorianApr-14-2012 5:37 PM@Shardy and Werthers; Truly, it was something I will never forget. There is a bar within the museum that looks like an Alien hive structure. It was breathtaking. Btw, in the museum there are lots of metal statues that look like SIL from Species. I want to go back and visit again.
And it's Ellen Ripley. xx
@Nox, I linked that interview somewhere. Sigourney did say that at the last scene when she is hiding in the closet that she thought the Alien should have "peeked" in on her, as if it were attracted to her. A one sided attraction at that point. Recap for creepyness--->"One sided, at that point". Imagine! This is also why the lambert "rape" scene is highly plausible and also ties in a bit with the movie Species, with that idea of sexual mating.
Here is a 5 part interview with Giger and his thoughts on Alien, it's new and he's real old. **(Cool bit in part 3 I think, he says Cameron took credit somewhat for his creation) Part 2 was taken off YouTube.:

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 6:56 PMDear fans! Thank you all for your insightful input! I can't describe how happy I am having read your answers. So I feel compelled to answer to you all:
@ZetaReticuli : Simply thanks man!
@Svanya: If you feel you are weird...then we all are. Sometimes I look at people who haven't seen Alien before, and I believe they are missing a life changing experience. But they should have seen it at the right time too. It doesn't matter though. Alien is a unique stand alone piece of original sci-fi. By the way Giger rocks. And I believe that much of Alien's success can be attributed to his exceptional work. Also, please remember sir Scott's own words more or less: "When shooting Alien, we didn't even have to worry about designing the sets or the aliens, ...Giger's work was a fully ready story-board for us".
I believe that Giger's blending of nudity, sex and bio-mechanical in his art work, is outstanding and a deeply reaching experience for everybody.
@Shardy: yes...I wouldn't like to have one of them crawling under my bed:)
@WerthersOriginal: Check Giger's online page instead...Take your girlfriend to Prometheus....you never know!
@My beloved NoXWord:Totally agree with you too. What drives the Alien is far more intriguing than its looks and behavior..Man..I hope sir Scott will have us in for a surprise again!
@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim: C' mon man..cut me some sluck..I am a fan at heart...Look at the text I've put in:)
@thefacehead: I believe I've got you covered!:)))
@Constealltion88 (is that constellation maybe?): You know I've been through the same experience like you...even though I was a little older than you...the impact was rather the same...at my 12, certainly still a child...but understanding fear more....uh :)))
@belladonna:The facehugger gets in your face too! Uh...yeah I liked too Species and Alien plenty...And I believe its the best, the ultimate out there in sci-fi alien characters. I would always like to buy a model of xeno and put it over my desk just to overcome my childhood fears. But I am sure, before everytime I would try to turn off the lights for a good night sleep, I would have certainly checked on the alien model twice, if for some unexplained reason it had come to life and some strange saliva would start drooling out its mouth....:)))))
I love you all guys.

Regarding visceral....need I remind you that when sir Scott was asked whether there is going to be a scene in Prometheus, like chestburster in Alien 1979 to rival the horror of it...well sir Scott clearly reassured us " Oh yes..." and perhaps its the same scene for which Shaw (Noomi Rapace) said she couldn't forget for a long time after shooting.
Intriguing!:)))

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:21 PMnice reply markos! i have a decent collection of alien figures, i used to make clay xenos in art class when i was a kid too. i also collected dinosaurs n other "monster" type figures.
i was a crazy kid... i was (and am) horrified of dolls and i thought if i had those figures in my room they would scare away any evil dolls that tried to come in my room while i was sleeping.
my parents should not have let me watch childs play and dolly dearest at such a young age, turned me into a little weirdo!

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:31 PM@belladonna...haha cool...that's a nice application of a xeno model! Never thought of it. That Giger design is certainly a cross cut and the perfect balance between reality and a perfect nightmare. It's got more than it takes to take out singlehandedly any kind of Chuck....:)

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 5:07 AMThanks Svanya for your thoughts.
I stumbled across a Giger gallery & bar in Gruyere a few years ago, which to be honest, was a bit strange (Giger's works in the middle of the verdant Swiss countryside...quite a juxtaposition!) and got to see the real items rather than prints in a book.
If you go back to Mr Scott's discussions with Fox re the design of the "Alien" (as on the "Alien Quadriligy " box set), Dan O'Bannon & Ridley were quite taken with Giger's images, and Ridley in particular was convinced that this was something special...and it was, on any number of levels.
